Alzheimer’s disease (AD), one of the most common causes of dementia in the elderly, is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. Accurate diagnosis in the early stage of AD is crucial for its treatment. Several methods based on signal processing and image analysis are presented. In particular, neuron image processing which plays an important role in AD diagnosis and its pathological analysis is discussed in detail.

Ramie and kenaf were traditional fiber crops in China, but their stalk after decorticating has not been used effectively. The stalk contains a lot of cellulose, and can therefore be used for the production of bioethanol. We studied the effects of different chemical pretreatment on enzymatic digestibility of ramie stalk and kenaf stalk. Ramie and kenaf stalks pretreated with alkali were chosen to produce ethanol using quasi-simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (Q-SSF) process. The results show that for the stalks pretreated with 4% NaOH and 0.02% anthraquinone-2-sulfonic acid sodium salt (AQSS) as catalyzer at 170 degrees C for 1 h, the ethanol concentration could reach 51 g/L after fermentation for 168 h at 18% of solid substrate concentration. By fed-batch to 20% of solid substrate concentration, the ethanol concentration could reach 63 g/L, 77% and 79% of the cellulose conversion could get for ramie stalk and kenaf stalk, respectively. For kenaf stalk pretreated with 5.2% NaHSO3 and 0.2% H2SO4 at 170 degrees C for 1 h, the ethanol concentration and cellulose conversion could reach to 65 g/L and 72%, respectively.

Objective To study the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Method The clinical data and, in partricular, the treatment modalities of 173 cases of differentiated thyroid carcinoma were retrospectively analyzed. Results All of the 173 patients were treated by resection and subsequent endocrine therapy.Different types of operations were selected in accordance with the clinical stages. No perioperative deaths occurred. There were altogether 30 operative complications including nerve injury.Ninety-one patients were followed up for over 5 years and no deaths occurred.Jugular lymphatic metastases occurred in 4 patients, sternum metastases in 2 and lung metastasis in 1.Conclusion Surgical resection and endocrine therapy are highly effective for the treatment of differentiated thyroid carcinoma.

Objective:To construct a mutispecific internal control for competitive RT-PCR analysis of Fas、FasL、GB、P、TIA-1 and ?-actin.Methods:Invitro synthesized fragments were amplified by PCR,there are two products,of which 145 and 147 bp.The 145 bp one contained 5′ primer sequences of Fas、FasL、GB、P、TIA-1 and ?-actin,another contained 3′ primer sequences of the same genes. The products with restriction sites were inserted into the vector PKF_3.Results:Restriction enzyme analysis and DNA sequencing were used to identify the recombinant plasmid, corresponding internal control was obtained by the amplification of the recombinant plasmid with each primer pair. The mutispecific internal control was then used for quantitative detection of TIA-1 in peripheral blood leukocytes from a patient with acutely rejecting allograft. Our study on Fas、FasL、GB、P、TIA-1 and ?-actin showed that the coamplified templates accumulated in a parallel manner throughout not only the exponential phase. Conclusion:The mutispecific internal control can be used for quantitative detection of the six genes. Objective To assess the clinical value of measuring the concentration of serum osteoprotegerin (OPG) in detecting the bone metastases in patients with prostate cancer. Methods The concentration of serum OPG in 40 patients was determined by ELISA. The data of ECT bone scan and Gleason score was collected simultaneously. The correlations between serum OPG and bone metastases, Gleason score were tested. Results The concentration of serum OPG in patients with bone metastases by ECT scan was( 16 237. 19 ±5144. 26) ng/L,which was significantly higher than the concentration in patients without bone metastases , which was (12 123.32 ±4136. 50)ng/L. There was no significant correlation between serum OPG and Gleason score. Conclusions The serum OPG has an important clinical value in prediction of prostate cancer with bone metastases. There is no significant correlation between serum OPG and the Gleason score.

Aim To observe the variation of T-cell subsets in spleen in different courses of disease and tis-sue histopathological changes in rats with adjuvant ar-thritis (AA).Methods The model of rat AA was in-duced by complete Freund’s adjuvant into the right hind metatarsal footpad of 20 male Lewis rats.Arthritis was evaluated by total score, arthritis index and paw swelling number. The percentage of total (CD3 +CD4 +), memory (CD4 + CD44 +), no-sensitizated (CD4 + CD62L +) and Th1 7 (CD4 + IL-1 7 +) on CD4 +T cells in spleen were detected by flow cytometry on days 1 4 and 22 after immuniozation. The his-topathological evaluation of heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, ankle joints and mesenteric lymph nodes were examined by hematoxylin and eosin (HE)stain.Re-sults The onset of secondary arthritis appeared on a-bout day 1 0 after immunization, with a peak onset on day 1 9.Systematic arthritis symptoms included front and hind paw swelling and redness (swelling was more apparent in the front rather than hind paws),nodule formation and redness on the ears, connective tissue swelling and redness of the nose and evident nodules and redness on the tail.Total score, arthritis index and the paw swelling numbers were enhanced in AA rats. Pathohistology of ankles joints showed hyperplasia, pannus formation, and inflammatory cells infiltration in AA rats. And pathohistology of heart, liver, spleen, kidney and mesenteric lymph nodes showed inflamma-tory changes.Compared with normal group, there was no change in the percentage of total, memory and no-sensitizated CD4 +T cell in the early stage inflammation but they were significantly enhanced in the peak of in-flammation.Th1 7 cell subsets were significantly en-hanced in both of the early and peak of inflammation. Conclusion These findings suggest that abnormal T cell responses and tissue histopathological changes are important features of AA rats.

Objective To investigate the effect on proliferation and apoptosis by RNA interference to inhibit Nucleostemin(NS) gene expression in gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 cells. Methods The NS-siRNA expression vector was transfected into gastric-carcinoma cells with LipofectamineTM2000 reagent. Then we detected the cell proliferation inhibition ratio by MTT assay, the levels of NS gene expression in all groups by RT-PCR,cell cycle by flow cytometry, cell apoptosis ratio by Annexin-V-FITC/PI kit. Results Compared with that in the control group, cell proliferation in S group decreased;at 24,48 and 72 h the cell proliferation inhibition ratio was 53.21%,71.54% and 87.47%,respectively,the level of NS gene expression reduced in S group.G0/G1 phase cell was 58.34%,S phase cell was 20.68%,and the cell apoptosis was 26.85%.Conclusion RNA interference could substantially inhibit NS gene expression in gastric carcinoma SGC-7901 cells, decrease cell proliferation, arrest cell cycle and increase apoptosis ratio.
