The neuropil in the area of the nucleus intermediolateralis is compossed of dendrites, axons, axonal terminals, synapses and processes of the neuroglia passed through them. The dendrites are scattered and variant in size and shape. Small axons, on the other hand, usually have regular contours and tend to travel in bundles. Three types of synaptic connections were found, the axo-dendritic, axo-sometic and axo-axonic synapses. Some of the synapses form glomerulus in which the dendrite or the axon may be the center. The presynaptic terminals contain numerous synaptic vesicles of various patterns. The pre-and postsynaptic membranes may be asymetrical or symetrical. According to the shape of the synaptic vesicles and the relative thickness of the pre-and postsynaptic membrane the synapses may be classified into three types: 1, spheric vesicle asymetrical type, 2, flattened vesicle symetrical type, and 3, intermediate type.

An HPLC-DAD-MS/MS method was developed for rapid analysis and identification of degradation products of buagafuran. Buagafuran and degradation products were separated on a Zorbax C8 column (5 microm, 4.6 mm x 150 mm) using acetonitrile-water (78 : 22) as mobile phase. The elutes were detected with diode array detector and tandem mass spectrometer via electrospray ionization source in positive ion mode. According to analysis of the retention time, UV spectra and MS, MS/MS data, combined with the possible degradation reaction of buagafuran, the structures of main degradation products were inferred. The results showed that six main degradation products were oxidation or peroxidation productions of buagafuran. Degradation product A was a double bond epoxidation product of buagafuran, degradation products B, C, D and E were the further oxidation products of degradation product A, degradation product F was a peroxidation product of buagafuran. The results indicated that the established method was effective in the rapid identification of the degradation products of buagafuran.

Objective To report deep venous thrombosis (DVT) after greater saphenous vein ligation and stripping and to evaluate diagnosis, treatment and prophylaxis. Methods The clinical characteristics, diagnosis and treatment of 12 inpatients with postoperative DVT were analyzed retrospectively. Results Of these 12 cases there were 7 cases of central type DVT,2 cases of peripheral DVT,and 3 cases of mixed type DVT.Secondary pulmonary embolism was complicated in 2 cases.Clinical symptoms in these 10 cases of proximal DVT were all severe.Catheter-directed thrombolysis(CDT) through the ipsilateral popliteal vein with protective(IV)CF was applied for these 10 cases.Of 10 cases, femoral vein was found ligated in 1 case, which was repaired under open surgery. Residual greater saphenous vein thrombus extending into deep vein was proved and managed by successful thrombolectomy in one case.Cockett syndrome were found as the causes in the other 8 cases,6 cases were treated with balloon dilatation angioplasty and endovascular stenting of the iliac vein. The 2 cases of with distal DVT were treated by anticoagulation therapy. All patients were cured. Conclusions Cockett syndrome, femoral vein injury and too long residual greater saphenous vein are common causes of DVT after greater saphenous vein ligation and tripping.Careful selection of cases, correct diagnosis, standard operative manipulation, early ambulation were all important in the prevention of DVT after great saphenous vein varix procedure.

Objective To summarize the experience on imaging diagnosis and surgical treatment for popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES). Methods From 2004 to 2010, 11 patients (12 limbs) diagnosed as PAES by CTA and MR ( A) underwent surgery. There were 11 patients with a mean age of (28 ±19) years, eight patients were male, three patients were female. Two patients were found to have bilateral involvement. Intermittent claudication was the most frequent presenting symptom. Six limbs were type Ⅰ , three limbs were type Ⅱ , three limbs were type Ⅲ , one limb was type Ⅳ. The preoperative mean ABI was 0.47 ± 0. 27. Results Popliteal artery exploration surgery or peripopliteal artery lysis was performed in 12 limbs, and this procedure was combined with a great saphenous vein bypass graft in seven limb because of arterial occlusion or aneurysm. After a median follow-up of ( 19 ± 20) months (0 month to 6 years) , the mean ABI improved to 0. 81 ±0. 30, which was significantly higher than that of preoperation( P < 0.05),one patient died of pulmonary embolism one day after operation, one patient (one limb) had popliteal artery thrombosis after operation. Intermittent claudication symptoms disappeared in all other patients. Conclusions Timely imaging diagnosis and surgical intervention is very important for patients of PAES.

BACKGROUND: Motion artifacts and magnetic susceptibility artifacts have serious impacts on magnetic resonance (MR) image quality. Periodically rotated overlapping parallel lines with enhanced reconstruction (Propeller) technique, collecting data spirally using radial blades by filling pattern, greatly reduce or eliminate these artifacts.OBJECTIVE: To discuss the clinical application of MR Propeller technique in eliminating the artifacts of brain images.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: The comparative observation was performed at Kunming General Hospital of Chengdu Military Area Command of Chinese PLA from July 2006 to April 2007.PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one cases showed dysphoria or unable to control oneself in the routine cranial MRI examination, and 5 presented artifacts because of magnetic-susceptibility.METHODS: Twenty-one cases, who had dysphoria and could not control themselves in routine cranial MRI examination, underwent Propeller T2 weighted imaging (WI), and the images were compared with routine T2 fast-recovery fast spin echo sequence; 5 cases, who had artifacts because of magnetic-susceptibility, received Propeller diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), and the images were compared with routine DWI.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The changes of motion artifacts and magnetic susceptibility artifacts resulted from Propeller technique.RESULTS: The artifacts caused by motion in 21 cases were significantly reduced or eliminated by Propeller T2WI scanning, and those caused by magnetic susceptibility in the other 5 cases were also significantly eliminated by Propeller DWI. Satisfactory MR images were obtained.CONCLUSION: Propeller T2WI or DWI technique can obviously reduce or eliminate the artifacts caused by motion or magnetic-susceptibility, and can significantly improve the image quality for clinical diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Under the cellular physiological condition, 15.3% N-acetylated chitosan has poor solubility which limits cellular microencapsulation process.OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to prepare 50% N-acetylated chitosan with 15.3% N-acetylated chitosan and investigate its feasibility for preparing chitosan microcapsule used for hepatocyte embedding after in conjunction with methacrylic acid-hydroxyethyl methacrylate-methyl methacrylate (MAA-HEMA-MMA) copolymer under the cellular physiological condition.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: This study, a control observation experiment, was performed at the Central Laboratory, First Hospital Affiliated to Jinan University, Guagnzhou, Guangdong Province, China between January and October 2006.MATERIALS: 15.3% N-acetylated chitosan was provided by Sigma-Aldrich Company, Singapore. Hepatocytes were acquired from male Wistar rats, weighing 250-300g, by two-step collagenase digestion method.METHODS: Hepatocytes were microencapsulated using 50% N-acetylated chitosan and MAA-HEMA-MMA copolymer at 25℃ under aseptic condition.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Microcapsule permeability was expressed with the diffusion degree of fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran in the empty microcapsule. The homeostasis of microencapsulated hepatocytes was measured by mechanical shearing-crush tests. The albumin-synthesizing capability of microencapsulated hepatocytes was determined by enzyme-labeled immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Urea-synthesizing capability was tested using kits (Sigma Diagnostics, USA) at the wavelength of 540 nm by colorimetric assay. Cytochrome P450 activity was determined using confocal laser microscopes and quantitated by the fluorescence intensity of products of 0-dealkylated 7-ethoxy resorufin, a substrate of cytochrome P450IA1. The plate-cultured hepatocytes were taken as controls.RESULTS: With increasing mass concentration of 50% N-acetylated chitosan, the diffusion degree of Mr 20000 and Mr 40000 FITC-dextran presented with a decreasing tendency, while the diffusion degree of Mr 70000 FITC-dextran was low and did not alter markedly. When the microencapsulated hepatocyte density was 2×109 L-1, the broken rate of microcapsule was only about 6% after 24 hours of shaking. Under the same condition of shaking, empty microcapsules were all broken after 4 hours of shaking. After 1 day of culture, approximately 30μmol/d urea could be synthesized among 1×106 bepatocytes that was markedly higher than the plate culture experimental result, 15μmol/d. After 7 days of culture, urea-synthesizing capability was close between in the microencapsulated hepatocytes and in the plate cultured hepatocytes. In the first 3 days of culture, 10μg/d albumin was acquired from 1×106 hepatocytes, and after 7 days of culture, only about 5μg/d albumin was obtained. The albumin level in the whole culture process was higher than plate culture results. After 1 day of culture, cytochrome P450 activity in the microencapsulated hepatocytes was higher approximately 8 times compared to plate culture results. After 1 week of culture, cytochrome P450 activity still retained at 50% of 1-day culture level.CONCLUSION: Microcapsule prepared by 50% N-acetylated chitosan under the physiological condition has good permeability and structural stability during the process of culture. Compared with in vivo surface culture test, degenerated chitosan microcapsule is better favorable to in vitro function of hepatocytes.

Objective To observe the value of ultrasonography, MR and MSCT in diagnosing intravitreous autologous eyelashes. Methods Thirty-two New Zealand rabbits were averagely divided into 4 groups (A, B, C and D) randomly, and 1, 5, 10 eyelashes were implanted into vitreous body of rabbits respectively in group A, B, and C, whereas rabbits in group D (the control group) were only exposed to sham operation without implanting any eyelashes. After one week, all rabbits underwent ultrasound, MR and MSCT examination, then the specimens of vitreous bodies were obtained and observed pathologically. Results All the implanted intravitreous eyelashes were displayed with ultrasound. Intravitreous eyelashes in group A were not detected with MRI, whereas in 3 rabbits of group B and all of group C were displayed on T2WI, T2*WI and SWI sequences. MSCT detected intravitreous eyelashes in only 6 experimental animals. Conclusion Ultrasonography should be considered as the first choice for diagnosis of intravitreous autologous eyelashes. Different sequences of MRI have various advantages in diagnosing intravitreous autologous eyelashes, whereas the diagnostic value of MSCT is limited.
