Objective To study the effects of low power laser irradiation in nasal cavity on cerebral blood flow and cerebral function in patients with brain infarction. Methods Thirty-nine patients with cerebral infarction were divided into a intravenous laser irradiation group and a laser irradiation in nasal cavity group. For the group of intravenous irradiation (ILIB group,18 cases), the patients lay on the bed with their heads fixed and were treated with intravenous laser irradiation for 30 min. Both before and after the therapy they received a SPECT cerebral perfusion imaging separately. For the group of laser irradiation in nasal cavity (LINC group,21 cases), the patients received laser irradiation in nasal cavity for 30 min and also SPECT cerebral perfusion imaging tests both before and after therapy. BFCR% model was used to quantify the blood flow of the focal and mirror regions. Results SPECT showed that there was significant improvement in perfusion of the entire brain and cerebral function in both ILIB and LINC groups after 30 minutes of treatment, each compared to those before treatment; the changes in the focal rCBF and cerebral function were much more obvious (P0.05). BFCR% in focal region was significantly higher than that in mirror region (P0.05). Conclusion Low power laser irradiation in nasal cavity can improve the focal rCBF and cerebral function of the patients with brain infarction, which is similar to that of the ILIB.

OBJECTIVETo observe the therapeutic effect and mechanism of nux vomica total alkali gel (NVTAG) on adjuvants arthritis (AA) rats.
METHODSD rats were randomly divided into nine groups: the normal group, the AA model group, NVTAG high, middle and low-dose (25, 12.5, 6.25 mg x kg(-1)) groups and the Votalin control (diclofenac diethylamine emulgel, 50 mg x kg(-1)) group. Except for the normal group, the remaining groups were transcutaneously administered with 0.1 mL freund's adjuvant complete (FCA) for inflammation in left rear feet and then evenly treated with medicine and packed with oilpapers. The foot volume method was adopted to determine foot swelling degree, with pain scoring and polyarthritis scoring. HE staining was used to observe arthro-pathologic injury. The content of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF-alpha) and vascular epidermal growth factor (VEGF) in synovium homogenates were measured by enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay (ELISA) respectively.
RESULTCompared with the model group, NVTAG and control gel can obviously reduce the foot swelling degree, polyarthritis indicators and relieve arthro-pathologic injury in AA rats (17-21 d). The levels of IL-1, PGE2, IL-6, VEGF and TNF-alpha in synovial homogenates of AA rats were also reduced by NVTAG significantly.
CONCLUSIONNVTAG shows an antergic effect on AA progress in rats, which is closely related to inhibition of development of inflammatory mediator.

OBJECTIVETo observe the clinical efficacy on analgesia and detumescence of Cheezheng Qingpeng ointment in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODSFrom December 2004 to May 2006, 78 patients were divided into the treatment group and the control group randomly using PROC PLAN from SAS software. There were 40 patients in the treatment group, 30 patients were male and 10 patients were female, with an average age of (48.2+/-9.7) years, who were treated with Cheezheng Qingpeng ointment external treatment. Thirty-eight patients were in the control group, 30 patients were male and 8 patients were female, with an average age of (47.7+/-13.7) years, and were treated with Diclofenac diethylamine emugel. All the patients were treated for 2 weeks. The metacarpophalangeal joint with most severe pain and swelling was observed. The indexes including joint pain, tenderness, swelling, joint motion and morning stiffness were detected and the VAS scores were compared between the two groups.
RESULTSAll the patients completed the trial, 35 patients in the treatment group and 33 patients in the control group. At the end of 2 weeks, 1 patient in the treatment group obtained an excellent result, 27 good and 7 bad; in the control group, 2 patients got an excellent result, 20 good and 11 bad. There were no statistically difference of therapeutic effects between the two groups. At the 1st week after treatment, the joint swelling score of the treatment group was (4.0+/-1.4), which was lower than the (5.5+/-1.9) in the control group.
CONCLUSIONThere is no obvious difference of therapeutic effects between Cheezheng Qingpeng ointment and diclofenac diethylamine emugel for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, but the relieving of swelling of Cheezheng Qingpeng ointment is better than that of Diclofenac Diethylamine Emugel.

OBJECTIVETo observe the regulatory effect of Chinese herbal compound for detoxifying and activating blood circulation on expression of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in aorta of apolipoprotein E gene knocked-out (ApoE (-/-)) mice.
METHODSApoE (-/-) mice of 13-week old were divided into two groups and fed with normal diet (Group A) and hyperlipidemic diet (Group B) respectively, the latter was subdivided into 7 groups as Group B1 - 7. Besides, a normal control group was set up with C57BL/6J mice. The drugs used for intervention were polydatin (PD, with 26.6 mg/kg as one dose) for detoxifying and Xiongshao Capsule (XC, with 110 mg/kg as one dose) for activating blood circulation respectively. The intervention was started 19 weeks later by treated Group B1 with PD one dose daily, Group B2 with XC one dose daily, Group B3 with PD and XC each 2 doses daily, Group B4 with PD and XC each one dose daily, Group B5 with PD and XC each half dose daily, Group B6 with lovastatin. To the Group B 7 (as a hyperlipidemia model group) as well as Group A and the normal control group, normal saline was given. After 17 weeks of intervention, the expressions of NF-kappaB and MMP-9 in aorta of mice were determined with immunohistochemical assay.
RESULTSExpressions of NF-kappaB and MMP-9 in aorta and sclerotic plaque were higher in group B7 than those in the normal control group, which were lowered in group B1 - 6 (P < 0.01), and the optimal effect was shown in group B3 (P <0.01).
CONCLUSIONCombined use of Chinese herbal medicine for detoxifying and activating blood circulation could reduce expression of NF-kappaB and MMP-9 in aorta of ApoE (-/-) mice, and the effect of the combination of the two was superior to that of use either of them.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Jiangtang Xiaozhi Tablet (JTXZT) on decreasing the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids in KK-Ay transgenic model mice with diabetes mellitus (DM).
METHODSKK-Ay transgenic mice were fed with high fat diet to induce DM obesity model. The C57 mice of the same age were recruited as the control group. Then the modeled KK-Ay mice were divided into 5 groups, i.e., the model group, the Pioglitazone Hydrochloride Tablet treatment group (8 mg/kg, as the positive control group), and the high dose JTXZT group (10 g/kg), the middle dose JTXZT group (5 g/kg), and the low dose JTXZT group (2.5 g/kg), 11 in each group. Eight weeks was taken as one therapeutic course. All medicines were given by gastrogavage. The food intake and body weight were measured every week. The blood glucose level was determined once every 2 weeks. The levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), serum lipids (TC and TG), insulin (INS), and leptin (Lep) were assayed 8 weeks after medication. The weight of liver and fat were weighed to calculate their indices. Then the adipose denaturalization of the liver was classified. The numbers of the pancreatic islet and adipocytes were respectively counted.
RESULTSCompared with the model group, the food intake and the body weight obviously decreased in the 3 JTXZT groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). From the 6th week, the FBG level obviously decreased in the high dose JTXZT group (P < 0.01). After eight successive weeks of intragastric administration, the levels of TG and INS obviously decreased in the 3 JTXZT groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The Lep level somewhat decreased in the high dose JTXZT group (P < 0.05). The indices of the liver and fat obviously decreased and the number of the pancreatic islet obviously increased in the 3 JTXZT groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The number of adipocytes obviously decreased in the high and middle dose JTXZT groups (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). The liver fatty degeneration was obviously improved in the high dose JTXZT group (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONJTXZT had obvious effects on decreasing the levels of blood glucose and serum lipids in KK-Ay transgenic model mice with DM obesity.

OBJECTIVETo compare the lipid lowering effects of Zhikang Granule (ZKG) and simvastatin.
METHODSForty-five out-patients with hyperlipemia who met the entry criteria were enrolled and randomized into two groups in the ratio of 2: 1, 30 patients in the ZKG group and 15 patients in the simvastatin group. The lipid lowering effects and safety of treatment during the 24-week therapeutic period, as well as the influence of treatment on plasma high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP) level in patients were observed.
RESULTSNo significant difference between the two groups was observed in serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) and triglyceride (TG) at the 4th, 8th, 12th and 24th week (P > 0.05). However, as compared with baseline, significant reduction of TC and LDL-C in both groups was shown at all the observing time points (P < 0.01), while the changes in TG and HDL-C were insignificant (P > 0.05). The control rates of LDL-C and TC in the ZKG group and the simvastatin group were 86.7% (26/30) versus 100% (15/15) at the 4th week, 80.0% (24/30) versus 100% (15/15) at the 8th week, 53.3% (16/30) versus 60.0% (9/15) at the 12th week, and 90.0% (27/30) versus 93.3% (14/15) at the 24th week, respectively, all showed insignificant difference between groups. No statistical differences were found between groups in levels of plasma transaminase, creatinine, uric acid and hs-CRP (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONZKG has a definite effect in lowering LDL-C and TC, and it is safe in long-term administration.

This study aims to explore the intervention effect of Chinese medicine of nourishing kidney and clearing liver on intermittent hypoxia(IH) induced injury model of HUVECs through p38MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway in vitro. HUVECs injury model was induced by modified IH treatment. The effective components of Chinese medicine of nourishing kidney and clearing liver including isochteroside, aucubin and ligustrazine were used as intervention drugs. The optimal compatibility concentration of them was screened in vitro, and then the optimal compatibility concentration was selected as the intervention dose to observe the effect on p38MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway in IH induced injury model of HUVECs. The results showed that isochnae, aucubin and ligustrazine had the best anti-inflammatory effect at concentration of 0.01 mg•L-1. NF-κB p65 and p-IκB in the nucleus in IH group were significantly higher than those in the normal control(N) group and the other groups. Immunofluorescence staining showed significant translocation of NF-κB p65 nucleus in IH group, and HUVECs adhesion capacity in IH group was increased significantly. As compared with IH group, the expression levels of p-p38MAPK, NF-κB p65 and p-IκB in p38MAPK inhibitor(INH) group and Chinese medicine of nourishing kidney and clearing liver(GDC) group were significantly decreased, and HUVECs adhesion capacity in INH group and GDC group was significantly inhibited as well. The optimal concentration of Chinese medicine of nourishing kidney and clearing liver can inhibit the phosphorylation of p38MAPK, and then inhibit the nuclear translocation and transcription function of NF-κB. This may be the mechanism of the protective effect of Chinese medicine on IH induced injury model of HUVECs.
