Objective To explore the indications, intraoperative problems and management of its complications of the microendoscopic discectomy (MED) in the treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc herni-ation through posterior approach. Methods 242 cases of lumbar disc herniation treated by MED were re-viewed retrospectively from March 2000 to March 2002. Of the 242 cases, there were 171 males and 71 fe-males aged from 19 to 71 years with an average of 34 years. Among them, the lesions were located at single level in 193, double levels in 46, and three levels in three. All of 242 patients were examined with CT, 48 of which were performed MR. Results 205 herniated discs of the single level were removed, 36 of the double levels, and one of the three levels. It was average 2.2 days for the patients to get off bed ranging from 24 hours to 6 days. Postoperative hospitalization was from 3 to 12 days with an average of 5.2 days. Among the intraoperative complications, dural tear happened in four, nerve root injury in two, and mistakes of localiza-tion in one. While in postoperative complications, there was discitis in one which happened at three weeks postoperatively, and was cured with antibiotics and ambulation for five months. All incision healed in one stage, except one suffered from superficial infection and healed by dress changing. All cases were followed up for 2 to 15 months with an average of 6 months. The average period for the patients retuning to daily life was 3.6 weeks, and 52.4% of the patients restored to previous work. According to Macnab's evaluation sys-tem for clinical outcomes, the results showed excellent in 183, good in 44, fair in 13 and poor in two, so the rate of excellent and good was 94%. However, there were two cases converted to open operation because of compressive neurological dysfunction. Conclusion Appropriate control of indications and skillful surgical technique are the key points to decrease the complication, and to improve the curative effect.

Ninety rats were divided into 8 groups. Group 1-5 were fed vitamin A free ration and each group was divided into 2 subgroups at the beginning and 12, 23, 36, 43, days after the experiment respectively. Group 6-8 were fed the ration containing 66, 132, and 198?g vitamin A per 100g diet respectively fer 30 days, and each group was also divided into 2 subgroups. The results showed that RBPR% was better than the serum vitamin A content in evaluating vitamin A nutritional status. It was suggested that the vitamin A nutritional status could be graded as follows: deficient(abore 70%)) mar-ginal(60-70%),normal (20-60%), and sufficient (under 20%)by RBPR%.

An improved microfluorimetric method for determination of serum vitamin A was presented. In this method, the excitation wavelength 345nm and emission maximum 480nm were selected, and cyclohexane as solvent for extraction of saponified vitamin A in the serum samples to be tested was used. The sensitivity was sufficient for measurement of vitamin A content in 20*l serum taken from normal fasting blood without elimination of interference. The recovery averaged 99.0% (93.0-105.5).When this method was applied to laboratory study or field work, practically, the results showed that the values of vitamin A obtained seemed to correlate with its nutritional status of experimental animals or subjects investigated. The procedure was simple, reproducible and easily acceptable, espicially in the field work.

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(02):-
35 rats were divided into 5 groups. Group 1-3 were fed rations containing 20, 12 and 6% caseien respectively, group 4 containing 12% mixed protein of soybean and gluten. The food of group 5 was the same as that of group 1 but the amount was only half of that of group 1. Every animal was given 8?g vitamin A by stomach tube daily for 3 weeks and then 25?g for 2 weeks. Afterward serum vitamin A values were determined in all animals, then 132?g vitamin A was administrated by stomach tube. After 3.5 hours, the vitamin A values in serum and liver were determind. The results showed that in group 3 and 5 serum vitamin A contents decreased and the liver values rose. It was suggested that the release of vitamin A from liver had been interfered by semistarvation or low protein intake. There is no difference between group 2 and 4.

Acta Nutrimenta Sinica 1956;0(04):-
Based on the body height and weight of the Chinese young men, 975 from the north and 921 from the south of China, actually measured, a calculating formula for the ideal body weight of young men both of north and south listed blow was established. The Northener's ideal body weight (kg) = [height (cm) - 150] ? 0.6 +50; the Southener's ideal body weight(kg) = [height (cm.) - 150] ? 0.6 +48. The formula later checked by another data of body height and weight of 783 young men from north and 883 from south has been proved to be reliable. It also showed that the ideal body weight of 1464 young men from north and 2264 from south calculated according to the formula seemed to be more reasonable than the another's formula used previously.

Objective To evaluate the detection rate of lesions of patients with Crohn’s Disease(CD)tusing combining the con-ventional MR and Cine MRE(MR enterography). Methods MRI images of twenty-nine patients with CD confirmed by clinic were analyzed retrospectively.Scan sequences include coronal Cine MRE,and standard MR protocol (FIESTA,SS-FSE,LAVA C+). Two radiologists analyzed the images with double blind method to explored whether there were significant differences existing be-tween having or having not Cine MRE on lesion detection rate (wall thickness, stenosis, comb sign, adhesions, fistulas). Results The number of lesions detected by standard MR combined with Cine MRE compared with standard MR alone were 82/80 (P =0.1 6) for wall thickening,52/43 (P =0.03)for stenosis,6/7 (P =0.36)for the comb sign,5/7(P =0.66)for adhesions,2/2for fistulas re-spectivily.Conclusion It is meaningless to combine Cine MRE with standard MR in lesions detection in patients with CD,Cine ima-ges can accurately determine diseased bowel stenosis, and show the adhesive location. On the basis of standard MR,Cine MRE can be added in patients with CD when necessary.
