BACKGROUND: The formation of long-term memory includes acquisition, consolidation and reconsolidation. Reconsolidation is very important for the new memory transforming into stable memory. Stress is an important environmental factor in the process of learning and memory. Corticosterone is very important for stress response. At present, research about the impact of corticosterone on reconsolidation of novel object recognition memory is less. Thus, it is very important to test the impact of corticosterone on reconsolidation of novel object recognition memory in rats.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effects of corticosterone on the reconsolidation of novel object recognition memory in rats.
METHODS: (1) The rats were intraperitoneal y injected with corticosterone (0.1, 1 and 3 mg/kg) immediately after reactivation. The discrimination index was used to assess memory performance and calculated as the difference in time exploring the novel and familiar objects. (2) The rats were intraperitoneal y injected with corticosterone (3 mg/kg) 6 hours after reactivation. The discrimination index was used to assess memory performance and calculated as the difference in time exploring the novel and familiar objects. (3) The rats were intraperitoneal y injected with corticosterone 3 mg/kg without reactivation. The discrimination index was used to assess memory performance and calculated as the difference in time exploring the novel and familiar objects.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Immediate injection of corticosterone 3 mg/kg after reactivation significantly decreased the discrimination index. At 6 hours after reactivation or without reactivation, corticosterone administration did not impact the discrimination index. These results confirmed that corticosterone administration immediately after reactivation impairs the reconsolidation of novel object recognition memory. The damage effect depends on the reactivation experience and the specific time window after reactivation.

Objective To explore the correlation between self-concept and subjective quality of life among children with tic disorders (TD). Methods The Piers-Harris Children's Self-concept Scale (PHCSS) and the Inventory of Subjective Life Quality (ISLQ) were complet-ed by 65 children with TD and 71 normal children from March to September, 2015; and analyzed with single factor analysis, correlation analysis and multi factors regression analysis. Results There was no significant difference in PHCSS scores between the TD children with and normal ones (t<1.624, P>0.05). The ISLQ scores of school life, self-awareness and cognitive component were less in the TD children than in the normal ones (t>2.051, P<0.05). The PHCSS subscores correlated with ISLQ subscores (P<0.05), except the following:PHCSS scores of behavior did not correlate with ISLQ scores of peer relationship, school life, living environment, self-awareness and cognitive com-ponent;PHCSS scores of intelligence and school environment did not correlate with ISLQ scores of family life, peer interaction and the liv-ing environment;PHCSS scores of physical appearance and properties did not correlate with ISLQ scores of family life and living environ-ment;PHCSS scores of anxiety did not correlate with ISLQ scores of family life, peer interaction and cognitive component;PHCSS scores of affiliation did not correlate with ISLQ scores of peer interaction;and PHCSS total score did not correlate with ISLQ scores of family life and living environment. PHCSS scores of affiliation were the factor related with the quality of life (β=0.301, P<0.05). Conclusion The quali-ty of life may be impaired in the children with TD, which may associate with the self-concept and need further intervention.

BACKGROUND:The internal structures of the colagen-heparan sulfate scaffold and human nerve are very similar. OBJECTIVE: To explore thein vivo biocompatibility of colagen-heparin sulfate scaffold. METHODS:Forty pigs were randomly divided into two groups, 20 in each group: observation group and control group. Medulo-puncture needle was inserted 1.0 cm adjacent to the midline of anterior fontanele into the subarachnoid space, and then removed gradualy. Colagen-heparin sulfate scaffold was implanted into the observation group, and no treatment was given in the control group. Brain tissues were observed under transmission electron microscope, and cel apoptosis and Caspase-3 expression were detected at days 1, 3, 7, 14 and 30 after surgery. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Under the electron microscope, there were some damaged neurons in the observation group with the emergence of demyelination changes in the myelinated nerve fibers; positiveexpression of Caspase-3 protein was found at the junction between the brain tissue and scaffold as wel as within the scaffold, but no positive expression was found in the surrounding tissue. There was no cel apoptosis within 30 days after surgery except for individual apoptotic neurons both in the observation group and control group. The number of apoptotic cels in the observation group was higher than that in the control group at days 1, 3, 7, 14 days after surgery (P < 0.05), but there was no difference between the two groups at 30 days after surgery (P > 0.05). Caspase-3 protein expression was at a low state in the two groups, but the protein expression of Caspase-3 was higher in the observation group than the control group at days 3 and 7 after surgery (P < 0.05). These findings indicate that the colagen heparin sulfate scaffold has good biocompatibility in the porcine brain.
