Objective The purpose of this study was to evaluate the disinfection effectiveness and properties of acrylic resin via microwave irradiation. Methods Forty acrylic resin base dentures fabricated in a standardized procedure were chosen and divided into Group A,B,C and D randomly. Group A,B and C were immersed in 200ml distilled water and submitted to microwave irradiation at 700W for 3,4,5 minutes individually. Group D was used as positive control. Bacteria specimens from each group were got for culture and numbers were calculated. Then the four groups were tested for the flexural strength and impact strength by universal test machine before and after microwave irradiation sterilization. Results The germicidal ratio of Group B was more than 90% ,while the ratio of group C was 100%. There was no significant difference in flexural strength and impact strength between group C and group D. Conclusions Microwave irradiation for 5 minutes at 700W produced sterilization of dentures contaminated with all bacteria whereas the denture strength is not affected. Microwave irradiation at 700W solution for 5 minutes was effective to sterilize acrylic resin base dentures.

[Summary] A selection of 528 unrelated subjects were enrolled(198 males, 330 females) with the mean age of(52. 23 ± 13. 41) years old. According to body mass index, 253 persons belonged to the normal weight group and 275 persons overweight/ obesity group. A total of 10 SNPs in CIDEB and CIDEC genes were detected. SHEsis online were used to get the haplotypes of these two genes. The relationship between above SNPs and obesity were analyzed under additive inheritance pattern. The main effects and interaction on obesity induced by two genes’ haplotypes were analyzed by logistic regression. rs2144493 in CIDEB gene was associated with obesity, C was a protective alleles, OR (95% CI) equals 0. 722(0. 525-0. 992). CCTT haplotype of CIDEB gene carriers and GCG haplotype of CIDEC gene carriers were more prone to obesity or overweight, there was an interaction between the haplotypes of 2 genes. CIDEB, CIDEC haplotypes may play independent and interactive roles in causing obesity.

Southern blotting with a labeled and linearized pUC 19 DNA containing a specific fragment of 0. 24 kb DNA of Plasmodium vivax asexual blood stages (kindly offered by Dr. C. Kidson )was used for further identification of blood samples showing positive reaction by dot-blot hybridization. The results showed that those with positive reaction from patients with P. vivax, with P. falciparum or with fever but with negative microscopic findings were also positive by Southern blotting. It was confirmed that some of those positive with P. falciparum were likely to infect P. vivax at the same time. So did a part of those with fever but negative in the blood films (Figs. 1,2).

Objective To established a diagnostic methods to idenfity Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) in China. Methods Two patients aged 5 and 20 years respectively who presented progressive neurologic regression and splenomegaly were subjected to filipin staining of cultured skin fibroblasts and genetic analyses of NPC1 gene. Results Although there were differences in onset ages and clinical presentations, filipin staining of the cultured skin fibroblasts confirmed the clinical diagnosis of NPC, showing an intense punctate pattern of fluorescence concentrating around the nuclei, consistent with the accumulation of unesterified cholesterol in NPC cells. Genetic sequence analysis further verified the results of filipin staining. The case 1 was compound heterozygous for M1142T(3425T>C),R1186H(3557T>C)and case 2 for Q88H(264G>T),469_470insGT.The latter 2 mutations were novel, and the possibility of polymorphisms was not supposed by analyzing 134 DNA samples obtained form normal controls. Conclusions Filipin stainning of the cultured skin fibroblasts is a reliable method to clinically diagnose NPC with a sensitivity. Genetic diagnose should be performed where genetic analysis is allowed.

Objective To investigate the effect of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) on human immunodeficiency virus type-1 ( HIV-1 ) antigen specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) immune responses. Methods Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were collected from 38 HIV-1 infected individuals receiving HAART ( HAART group) and 31 HIV-1 infected individuals not receiving HAART (non-HAART group), and stimulated with a peptide pool containing 12 overlapping peptides in HIV-1 P24;then the frequency of interferon γ ( IFNγ ) secreting cells were assessed by enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) method. Difference in HIV-1 antigen specific CTL immune response between non-HAART group and HAART group was analyzed by χ2 and Mann-Whitney U tests. Results Positive response rate of HIV-1 antigen specific CTL immune responses in HAART group ( 65.8%, 24/38 ) was higher than that of non-HAART group (32.3%, 10/31, χ2 = 6. 522, P < 0.05 ). For HIV-1 infected individuals with blood CD4 +T cells > 350/μL, the frequency of HIV-1 antigen specific CTL responses in HAART group was higher than that in non-HAART group (Z = -2. 819, P <0.05 ). In the HAART group, those receiving HAART more than 12 months were of higher frequency of HIV-1 antigen specific CTL responses ( Z =-2. 195, P < 0. 05 ). Conclusion HAART especially long-term treatment may enhance HIV-1 specific CTL responses in HIV-1 infected individuals.

AIM:To observe the effects of the combination of berberin and epirubicin on the cell cycle of T24 bladder cancer cells and the underlying mechanisms.METHODS:The cancer cells were exposed to epirubicin in the presence or absence of different concentrations of berberin. The viability of the cancer cells was determined by MTT assay. The cell cycle distribution was detected by flow cytometry, and the protein levels of cyclin D1, CDK2, CDK4, P21 and P27 were detected by Western blot.RESULTS:Berberine markedly enhanced the inhibitory effect of epirubicin on the viability of T24 cells and promoted epirubicin-induced cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 phase as compared with the negative control cells.Epirubicin increased the protein expression of P27 and P21, both of which were enhanced by treatment with berberin. In contrast, berberin exposure further decreased the protein expression of cyclin D1, CDK2 and CDK4 in epirubicin-treated T24 cells.CONCLUSION:Berberine significantly promotes epirubicin-induced G0 /G1 phase arrest in human bladder cancer cells by up-regulating P27 and P21 expression and inhibiting the expression of cyclin D1, CDK2 and CDK4.
