2.Development and application of umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2007;0(21):-
The paper aimed to review and update the studies on umbilical cord blood mesenchymal stem cells (UCMSCs) by retrieving Pubmed database and Chinese Journal Full-text Database. As a pluripotent stem cell, UCMSC exhibits abundant source, simple collection, preservation and transport with no allograft injection or ethical issues. UCMSCs can differentiate into cells of hematopoietic system and into osteoblast, chondrocyte, adipocyte, myocyte, neurocyte and hepatocyte under specific culture conditions. UCMSC surface antigen has no specificity. It has the features of mesenchymal cells, endothelial cells and epithelial cells. UCMSCs are widely used to treat many difficult diseases such as encephalomyelopathy, heart disease, diabetes mellitus, necrosis of the femoral head, and vascular occlusion of the lower limbs.
3.Changes and significance of the circulating immunocomplexes in patients with recurrent uveitis
Recent Advances in Ophthalmology 2001;21(3):170-171
Objective To explore the changes and significance of the circulating immunocomplexes(CIC) in patients with chronic iridocyclitis. Methods We assessed circulating immunocomplexes in peripheral blood of 45 patients with recurrent uveitis and 42 healthy controls by PEG deposition with the biochemical analyzer to obtain levels of CIC different with recurrent uveitis. Results Levels of CIC were significantly higher in active patients(27.358±6.729)than those in controls(13.459±6.164,P<0.001) and inactive patients (16.248±6.233,P<0.001),but patients (inactive) had significantly higher levels than those in controls (P<0.05).Conclusion Levels of CIC were found in the groups of active patients with recurrent uveitis (27.358±6.729), but levels of CIC in inactive patients fell. The result of this study suggest that recurrence of uveitis is related to immunocomplexes, and changes in the levels of CIC could be also a measure standard of therapeutic effects.

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2010;08(6):375-379
Objective: To observe the effect of acupuncture plus LONG's manual manipulations on the functional improvement of the patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion. Methods: 60 cases of the patients were randomly divided into a observation group and a control group, 30 cases in each group. The observation group was treated with acupuncture plus LONG's manual manipulations, and the control group was treated with single acupuncture. The functions of the lumber vertebrae were processed in accordance with the assessment system of Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA), and the therapeutic effects were assessed by Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: After the treatments, the differences in JOA and improvement indexes were statistically significant (P<0.05) between the two groups. VAS was decreased much remarkably in the observation group (P<0.01) than before the treatments and decreased remarkably in the control group (P<0.05) than before the treatments. There was a remarkable difference in VAS between the two groups after the treatments (P<0.05).Conclusion: Acupuncture plus LONG's manual manipulations are better than single acupuncture in improving the functions of the patients with lumbar intervertebral disc protrusion.

Objective: To investigate the influence of astragalosides (AST) and Panax notoginseng saponins (PNS) combination on oxidative stress of brain tissues in C57BL/6 mice with cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods: Eighty C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into sham-operated group, untreated group, high-dose combination group (AST at a dose of 220 mg/kg plus PNS at a dose of 230 mg/kg), medium-dose combination group (AST at a dose of 110 mg/kg plus PNS at a dose of 115 mg/kg), low-dose combination group (AST at a dose of 55 mg/kg plus PNS at a dose of 57.5 mg/kg), AST (110 mg/kg) group, PNS (115 mg/kg) group and edaravone (4 mg/kg) group. AST and PNS were administered by gavage once daily for 4 days and edaravone was administered by intraperitoneal injection twice daily for 4 days. On the fourth day, bilateral common carotid arteries were ligated for 20 minutes to induce cerebral ischemia, followed by 60 minutes of reperfusion. Ischemic brain tissue was used to prepare tissue homogenate, then contents of malonaldehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH) and nitric oxide (NO), and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and nitric oxide synthase (NOS) in the homogenate were detected. Twoxtwo analysis of variance of factorial design was used to analyze whether there was an interaction between AST at 110 mg/kg and PNS at 115 mg/kg. Results: Compared with sham-operated group, contents of MDA and NO, and activity of NOS in the untreated group were remarkably increased (P<0.01), activity of SOD and content of GSH were decreased (P<0.01). Compared with the untreated group, content of MDA in the AST group was decreased (P<0.01) and activity of SOD was increased (P<0.01), however, contents of GSH and NO and activity of NOS had no obvious changes (P>0.05). Contents of MDA and NO in the PNS group was decreased as compared with the untreated group (P<0.01), but activities of SOD and NOS and content of GSH had no changes (P>0.05). Contents of MDA and NO and activity of NOS in brain tissues in the edaravone group were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05), and activity of SOD was increased (P<0.05), while content of GSH had no changes (P>0.05). Contents of MDA and NO and activity of NOS in brain tissue in the AST and PNS combination groups were decreased (P<0.01, P<0.05), the activity of SOD increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), the content of GSH increased (P<0.01, P<0.05), and activity of SOD and content of GSH were increased (P<0.01, P<0.05). The results of analysis of variance of factorial design showed that there were interactions between AST (110 mg/kg) and PNS (115 mg/kg) (P<0.01). Conclusion: Combination of AST (110 mg/kg) and PNS (115 mg/kg) has a restraint effect on the early oxidative stress injury in the brain after ischemia-reperfusion, and the combination has a synergistic or additive effect.
