Samples of skeletal muscle in forearm were taken from 60 sites in each of 10 normal autopsy subjects (male 7, female 3) between 3 and 69 years of age. The distribution and composition of type I and type II fibers in the muscles of the forearm were studied by histochemical method for myofibrillar ATPase. The results showed that the mean percentage of type I fibers ranged between 45% to 59% in the muscles of the forearm. In general, the slow contracting fibers of the forearm muscles were slightly higer than 50%. In the flexors and extensors of the forearm the respective percentage of type I fibers were 49.8% and 55.3%. The slow contraction fibers of the extensors muscle group showed higher proportion of type I fibers than those of the flexor group and the difference is statistically significant (P

BACKGROUND: Thoracolumbar segments (T11-L2) prone to damage due to its special anatomical and biomechanical characteristics. Therefore, fully understanding the shape of pedicle of vertebral arch and finding the visible, constant, and the point of insertion of the pedicle axis is very important to the safety of pedicle screw placement.OBJECTIVE: To measure the surgically relevant parameters of thoracolumbar pedicles between Han and Uygur males using computed tomography (CT) scan to provide some anatomic reference data for pedicle screw fixation.METHODS: The vertebral bodies and pedicles of adult males were scanned (60 cases of Han people and 60 cases of Uygur people) from T10-L3 with CT. The parameters were processed by three-dimensional reconstruction. Transverse pedicle width, pedicle axis length, transverse pedicle angle, and sagittal pedicle angle were measured by using length and angle measurement tool of browser in bone-window CT images. The age and stature information were recorded. All the data above were processed by SPSS 13.0 software.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: (1) The mean transverse pedicle width of T12 and L1 in Han was bigger than that in the Uygur. (2) The mean transverse pedicle angle of T12 and L2 in Han was bigger than that in the Uygur. (3) The mean pedicle axis length and sagittal pedicle angle of T11 and L1 in Han were bigger than that in the Uygur (P < 0.05). (4) There were some differences among some parameters of the thoracolumbar pedicles between the Han and Uygur people.Data from any study only can be used as a guide for pedicle screw fixation. Preoperative CT evaluation may provide an individualized strategy to reduce the incidence of postoperative complications caused by misplacement.

Objective To investigate the immunogenicity of mycobacteriophage D29 (phage D 29) in guinea pig models with different delivery routes, and provide information for the application of phages in tuberculosis (TB) therapy. Methods Hartley guinea pigs were administrated with phage D29 through inhalation, intranasal drop or subcutaneous injection for 6 times within 35 days.7H9 broth aerosol inhalation and 0.85 % NaCl solution aerosol inhalation were set as solvent and negative controls,respectively.Anti-phage D29 neutralizing antibodies in sera collected weekly were measured by phage reduction neutralizing test (PRNT) and cytokine levels (interleukin-2,interleukin-4 and interferon-γ) were detected at day 35 by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).The data were analyzed by ANOVA and nonparametric test.ResultsNeutralizing antibodies were both negative in two control groups, while low-titer neutralizing antibodies (below 1 ∶ 100) appeared in inhalation and intranasal drop groups only at day 7 and day 14. Nevertheless, neutralizing antibodies were continuously detected in subcutaneous injection group, which increased rapidly and reached 1∶ 16 365.6 at day 35. After 35 days of experiments, serum concentrations of interleukin-2 (x2 =2.7605,P>0.05),interleukin-4 (F=2.17,P>0.05) and interferon-γ(F=0.75,P>0.05) among three treatment groups and two control groups were all not significantly different.ConclusionsThe titer of anti-phage 29 neutralizing antibodies induced by inhalation or intranasal drop administration of phage D29 are both significantly lower than subcutaneous injection.Phage D29 administration doesn’t change the levels of cytokines, which indicates that it may not break the helper T cell (Th)1/Th2 balance.

One severely burned patient, caused by heat lead slag and combined with shock, was hospitalized in our burn unit on 2nd June, 2016. The patient received treatments including anti-shock, intensive care, anti-infection, and organ protection. On post injury day 16, the patient suffered outbreak of acute hemorrhagic necrotizing enteritis after eating dumplings. Plasma and albumin were given, octreotide was intravenously infused to inhibit the secretion of intestinal fluid, the broad-spectrum antibiotics were used for anti-infection, abdominal puncture and drainage were performed, sodium tanshinone ⅡA sulfonate was applied to improve the intestinal microcirculation, ulinastatin was applied to alleviate inflammatory reaction, somatostatin was given to reduce intestinal bleeding, and voriconazole was given for antifungal treatment. The patient gradually recovered and was finally cured and discharged. Among critically ill patients, gastrointestinal tract is not only the initiating organ of sepsis, but also one of the target organs which can be easily damaged during sepsis. This case reminds us the importance of gastrointestinal management in severely burned patients.
