Objective To study the neuropsychological features of patients with Alzheimer disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods Fifty-two AD, 26 MCI and 24 healthy aging cases were investigated by the clinical evaluation and a series of neuropsychological tests which include mini-mental state examination (MMSE), clinical dementia rating scale (CDR), activity of daily living scale (ADL) and clinical memory scale (CMS). Results The scores of the neuropsychological tests in AD,MCI and normal control groups were as follows: MMSE scores were 18. 9?5. 1, 26. 9?2. 1, 29. 0?1.1 respectively; ADL scores were 48. 3?17. 7, 26. 7?9. 3, 22. 1?4.1 respectively; Memory Quotient(MQ)scores were 52. 5?26. 7, 81. 3?10. 8, 101. 8?11. 6; CMS scores were 52. 5?26. 7, 81. 3?10. 8, 101. 8?11. 6 respectively. All neuropsychological tests except ADL in MCI group were significantly lower than those in the normal controKall P

ObjectiveTo investigate the incidence and correlative risk factors of aspiration in Alzheimer disease (AD) patients with aspiration pneumonia. MethodsData of 88 cases with AD were retrospectively investigated. Several possible correlative risk factors were analyzed with multiple Logistic regression. Results38 cases with AD complicated aspiration pneumonia during the observation period [average (3.51±0.25) years].The total average annual incidence of aspiration pneumonia in AD was 12.3%. The annual incidence of aspiration pneumonia in mild AD, moderate AD and severe AD were 11.1%,12.3%,17.6% respectively. The correlative risk factors of aspiration in AD patients with aspiration pneumonia were severity of AD,application of neurosedatives, silent bilateral basal ganglia lacunar infarction (SBI), decrease of activity of daily living (ADL) and leukoaraiosis (LA). ConclusionAspiration pneumonia is a common complication occurring not only in severe AD but also in mild and moderate AD.

Aim To investigate the effect of the extract of Averrhoacarambola L.root (EACR)on renal func-tion in diabetic mice and its anti-oxidative action. Methods Diabetic mice were established by tail vein injection with 120 mg·kg-1 streptozotocin (STZ)and were divided into 5 groups:model control group,val-sartan control group, and low-,middle-,high-dose of EACR groups (300,600,1 200 mg·kg-1 ).And 10 normal mice consisted of normal control group. The fasting blood glucose (FBG)of mice was detected be-fore and after administration of drugs. After last admin-istration,the blood and urine samples were collected for creatinine (Cr),urea nitrogen (BUN),urine and 24 h urinary protein determination. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD ),glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)and malonaldehyde (MDA)content were determined using kits.HE staining was conducted to observe the pathological changes of kidney tissues. ELISA method was utilized to detect the contents of catalase (CAT)and reactive oxygen species (ROS ). The expressions of Cyto-C,AIF and caspase-3 proteins in kidney tissues were analyzed by Western blot.Re-sults Compared with model group, the serum bio-chemical indexes and 24 h urinary protein of valsartan and moderate-,high-dose of EACR groups were de-creased with statistical significance (P<0.05 ).After the treatment, the MDA content was decreased by EACR treatment, and SOD,GSH-Px and CAT activities were enhanced.Meanwhile the expressions of ROS, Cyto-C,AIF and caspase-3 were down-regulated.The pathological changes of kidney tissues were ameliorated by EACR through HE results. Conclusions The ex-tract of Averrhoacarambola L.root can decrease the se-rum levels of Cr and BUN,reduce the MDA and ROS contents in kidney tissue and enhance the activities of SOD,GSH-Px and CAT,down-regulate the expres-sions of Cyto-C,AIF and caspase-3 proteins in kidney tissues, elevate the anti-oxidative effect of kidney. Therefore, the renal function of diabetic mice is melio-rated.

Organ-specific tumor cell adhesion to extracellular matrix (ECM) components and cell migration into host organs often involve integrin-mediated cellular processes. Direct integrin-mediated cell adhesion to ECM components in the space of Disse appears to be required for the successful liver metastatic formation of colon cancer. In the present study, human colon cancer HT-29 cells were transfected by liposome with integrin-beta(1) antisense oligodeoxynucleotide (ASODN). The integrin-beta(1) gene expression in HT-29 cells was significantly down-regulated. The migration of HT-29 cells was assayed using transwell cell culture chambers in vitro. The number of migrating HT-29 cells in experimental group was far less than that in control group (P<0.05). The models of hepatic metastasis in nude mice were established by the intrasplenic injection of transfected HT-29 cells. Thirty days later, the nude mice were killed and the average number of hepatic metastases (4.00+/-0.93 per mouse), average volume (10.10+/-6.50 mm(3) per mouse), average weight (0.0440+/-0.0008 g per mouse) in experimental group were remarkably reduced as compared with those in control group (P<0.05). Integrin-beta(1) expression in the hepatic metastasis was studied by immunohistochemistry (SP). Positive cell percentage of hepatic metastases in experimental group was markedly decreased as compared with that in control group (P<0.05). It was concluded that integrin-beta(1) may take part in hepatic metastasis, and down-regulation of integrin-beta(1) expression may play a key role in decreasing migration and hepatic metastasis of human colon carcinoma cells (HT-29).

AIM: To construct human Egr-1 promoter luciferase reporter system and study its activity induced by i-onizing radiation. METHODS: Egr-1 promoter was obtained by human genomic PCR and cloned into pGL3-basic vector. After transfection of recombinant plasmid into human tumor cells, the Egr-1 promoter activity induced by ionizing radiation was detected by luciferase reporter assay. RESULTS: The luciferasy reporter system of Egr-1 promoter was successfully constructed. The activity of Egr-1 promoter was substantially increased after different doses of IR and reached to the peak at the time point of 48h after IR. CONCLUSION: The Egr-1 promoter was constructed in this study showed IR inducible activity in tumor cells, laying foundation for the research of radiation, mediated gene therapy.

A series of research results on the influence of soybean to the bioavai?lability of non-heme iron in diet are reported. It is proved that Soybean and some of its products decrease the bioavailability of non-heme iron in diet by human observation and animal experiments. This result is due to insufficient control over the inhibitors and utilization of the enhancers of the bioavailability of iron in soybean itself.Experiments show that through some special treatment processes such as sprouting, fermenting and making bean curd, the above disadvantages may be effectively reduced and remarkably increase the bioavailability of the non-heme iron. These conclusions possess both theoretical and practical meaning for full utilization of soybean protein and effective prevention of iron deficiency anemia.
