Objective To investigate if edema caused by rosiglitazone is associated with the change of aldosterone level. Methods Plasma aldosterone levels in different periods from patients treated with rosiglitazone combined with insulin were measured.Type 2 diabetes patients who have been treated with insulin alone were divided into two groups: patients treated with rosiglitazone(4mg/d) combined with insulin(RSG+insulin group), or treated with insulin alone (insulin group)(n=10). Aldosterone levels, incidence of edema and weight gain were monitored every two months during six months. Results The incidence of edema and weight gain were higher in RSG+insulin group than in insulin group. After two months, aldosterone levels were higher in RSG+insulin group than in insulin group[(77.8±25.9)vs(60.2±27.6)pg/ml,P>0.05],but it had no statistical difference; after four months, aldosterone levels were higher in RSG+insulin group than in insulin group[(87.2±27.1)vs (61.5±25.6) pg/ml,P<0.05]. After six months, aldosterone level recovered gradually,it had no statistical difference compared with that of control[(77.0±21.0)vs(69.6±21.7) pg/ml,P>0.05]. Conclusions The cause of early edema in type 2 diabetic patients treated with rosiglitazone combined with insulin was probably assosiated with elevated aldosterone level.

OBJECTIVETo explore a safe and effective scheme of analgesic for labor.
METHODSEighty-four primiparas without contraindication of vaginal delivery were divided into an observation group and a control group, 42 cases in each one. In the observation group, the acupoint injection was given at Zusanli (ST 36) combined with electroacupuncture (EA) at Hegu (LI 4) and Sanyinjiao (SP 6) till the cervical opening at the end of first stage labor. In the control group, the routine respiratory instruction was applied. In 5 min, 10 min and 60 min of acupuncture (the same time points in the control group) as well as at the end of the first and second stage labor, the analgesic effect was assessed for the primiparas of the two groups. The labor stages, adverse reactions, postpartum hemorrhage, postpartum urine retention, newborn asphyxia rate and usage rate of oxytocin were compared between the two groups.
RESULTSIn the observation group, in 5 min, 10 min and 60 min of acupuncture as well as at the end of the first and second stages, the visual analogue scale (VAS) was lower apparently as compared with the control group at the corresponding time points (all P < 0.05). The differences in the time limit in the active period, the second and third stages were not significant between the two groups (all P > 0.05). The incidence of adverse reactions and the usage rate of oxytocin were lower than those in the control group [2.4% (1/42) vs 31.0% (13/42); 2.4% (1/42) vs 23.8% (10/42), both P < 0.05]. The differences in postpartum hemorrhage, postpartum urine retention and newborn asphyxia rate were not significant between the two groups (all P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe combination of acupoint injection and EA is the effective analgesic scheme for labor. This scheme effectively alleviates labor pain and has no maternal and child complications.

AIM: Based on the water-solubility of polyethylene glycol (PEG) with different relative molecular weight (RMW) and sodium alginate, we investigated the porous structure and property of calcium alginate scaffold with different RMW and dosages of PEG, which was used as porogenic agent. METHODS: The experiment was carried out in the Key Laboratory of Biomedical Engineering and Biomaterials, Jinan University from March 2006 to September 2007.①PEG at different RMWs (Mw=2 000, 4 000, 6 000, 8 000, 10 000, 20 000, 35 000) and different dosages (mass fraction=0, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04, 0.05, 0.06) were added into sodium alginate solution at 0.02 mass fraction. Then alginate was crosslinked, solidified and molded into indiscerptible film and graininess through Ca2+. PEG was dissolved by water. Therefore, a mass of porous structures could be formed in alginate.②Water content and swelling ratio of alginate was tested. Scanning electron microscope was used to observe the porous configuration. RESULTS: ①Porous alginate scaffold could be obtained through PEG and it exhibited good intensity and toughness, with water content reaching 92%. The scaffold could be formed into film and graininess.②Scanning electron microscope results revealed that the distribution of porous structure was uniformed. The aperture was 43.75 ?m-2.8 mm, and could be controlled by PEG's RMW and dosage. Inflated and uniform aperture structure was harvested when RMW of PEG was 4 000 and 6 000. CONCLUSION: Porous alginate structure can be obtained through regulating PEG's RMW and dosage. High water content and porosity of alginate scaffold material can be used in cell culture of tissue engineering and used as controlled release matrix of bio-active component.
