AIM: To compare the visual acuity and contrast sensitivity of eyes with different corneal spherical aberration implanted with the same aspherical IOL and evaluate the effect of different ocular spherical aberration on visual performance after phacoemulsification.
METHODS:It was a prospective case series study. Forty-six eyes of thirty-nine age-related cataract patients in our department were included. The patients were divided into 3 groups according to the value of preoperative corneal spherical aberration. Eyes with corneal spherical aberration≤0. 2μm were assigned to group A, those with corneal spherical aberration >0. 2μm and ≤0. 3μm to group B, and those with corneal spherical aberration≥ 0. 3μm to group C. All patients underwent phacoemulcification and recieved AcrySof IQ aspheric IOL. Uncorrected visual acuity ( UCVA ) , best-corrected visual acuity( BCVA) , contrast sensitivity, and total ocular higher - order aberrations for a 6. 0mm pupil were recorded 3mo postoperatively. ANOVA were used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: There were no significant differences in UCVA and BCVA between the 3 groups (P=0. 287, 0. 115). Contrast sensitivity was no statistically significant difference between the 3 groups at any spatial frequency under photopic、 mesopic, and mesopic with glare conditions (P>0. 05). With a 6. 0mm pupil diameter, root mean square values for total ocular higher - order aberrations were lower in groups A and B than that in group C (P=0. 000). The difference of total ocular spherical aberration was statistically significant between the 3 groups (P=0. 000). Coma and trefoil were similar between the groups (P=0. 788,0. 590), with no statistically significant differences.CONCLUSION:Implantation of the same aspherical IOL in eyes with different corneal spherical aberration results in similar visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Small differences of ocular spherical aberration after phacoemulsification have no effect on visual performance.

Scientific research output of clinical trials in Chinese medicine (CM) is insufficient, but international papers hold an important scientific position in China. Based on the current situation, we analyzed the present publication situation of international medical papers in our country, and the feasibility and urgency of publishing international papers on clinical trials of CM. Finally, we proposed to use the PDCA (plan-do-check-action) cycle method to improve the quality control and management of CM clinical trials. Moreover, by combining our experience in relevant scientific research launched at our department, we expounded strategies for improving the quantity and quality of international papers in CM.

Persicae Semen (PS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been widely used for the syndrome of blood stasis in China since the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the present study, we developed an HPLC-UV fingerprint analysis method for the quality control of PS. The HPLC fingerprint was performed on Shimadzu Inertsil C18 column (4.6 mm x 250 mm, 5 microm) at 35 degrees C. The mobile phases were composed of acetonitrile and water using a gradient elution. The flow rate was 1.0 mL x min(-1), and the detection wavelength was set at 210 nm. The fingerprint method was validated according to the Guidelines for Traditional Chinese Medicine Injection Fingerprint, and applied to determine 41 batches representative herbs collected from Xinjiang of China. The chromatographic peaks were characterized by UPLC-Q-TOF-MS, and nine of them were identified by comparison with the literature and/or reference standards. In order to classify and assess the samples, hierarchical clustering analysis and partial least square discriminant analysis were performed based on the common chromatographic peaks, and the samples were geographically classified into two classes, with six chemical compounds as classification markers which were significantly different between the two classes (P < 0.05).

Objective To investigate the relationship between apoptosis of bone marrow cells and tumor necrosis factor-?(TNF-?),Fas/FasL expression in children with aplastic anemia. Methods The concentration of TNF-? in supernatant of cultured bone marrow mononuclear cell(BMMC) was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. The expression of Fas/FasL,apoptosis ratio of bone marrow CD34+ cell were evaluated by flow cytometry. Results The concentration of TNF-? in supernatant of cultured BMMC in AA group[SAA (27.9?8.20) ng/L;CAA (23.6?6.78) ng/L] increased significantly compared with control group(t=3.432 P0.05).Apoptosis ratio of CD34+ cell in SAA group[(24.6?9.56)%] and CAA group[(20.9?7.32)%] significantly increased compared with control group(t=3.492,3.458 Pa0.05).The concentration of TNF-? was positively correlated with the expression of CD34+ Fas+ in all types AA children(r=0.542 P0.05).Conclusions TNF-? and Fas/FasL system can be involved in inducing CD34+ cell apoptosis. This may contribute to understanding the decreased number of stem cells and bone marrow failure.

AIM:To evaluate the effect of lipoic acid ( LA) on LPS-induced Parkinson disease ( PD) model of mice.METHODS:Female C57BL/6 mice of 10-month-old were randomly divided into saline control group , PD group and LA group. The PD mouse model was induced by intranasal instillation of LPS .Assays of tyrosine hydroxylase , microglia and nuclear factor kappa B ( NF-κB) were performed by the methods of immunohistochemistry and Western blotting .RE-SULTS:Intranasal LPS instillation exhibited basic characteristics of PD model .However, LA administration significantly improved motor dysfunction , protected dopaminergic neurons from damage , and inhibited NF-κB activation in inflammatory microglia in the substantia nigra area of the brain .CONCLUSION:LA may exert a profound neuroprotective effect by an-ti-neuroinflammatory reaction to arrest the progression of PD .

BACKGROUND:Lumbar spine MRI and electrophysiological test are reliable methods for evaluating nerve root injury caused by lumbar disc herniation.
OBJECTIVE:To analyze the correlation between the MRI-based grading system and the latency and frequency of F wave as wel as latency and amplitude of H-reflex in patients with lumbar disc herniation.
METHODS:MRI imaging of the lumbar spine was performed with a 3.0-T imager and a dedicated TCL coil to classify lumbar disc herniation and nerve root compression. F wave and H reflex were detected on the patient bilateral tibial nerves using Oxford myoelectricity evoked potential instrument.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Spearman correlation analysis showed that the MRI-based grading of patients with lumbar disc herniation had a negative correlation with F wave frequency (r=-0.594 0, P<0.000 1), and a positive correlation with F wave latency (r=0.825 6, P<0.000 1) and H-reflex latency (r=0.875 0, P<0.000 1), but no correlation with H-reflex amplitude (R=0.117 4, P=0.257 3). With MRI grading increased, F wave frequency was decreased, and F wave and H-reflex latency were prolonged gradual y, indicating aggravating nerve root compression.

To evaluate the automated segmentation algorithm for detection of intra - retinal layers to process images obtained from ultra- high resolution optical coherence tomography ( OCT ) . Graph theory and the shortest path search based on dynamic programming were applied to automatically segment the 8 intra - retinal layers. We experimentally verified the accuracy and reliability of the algorithm. The results showed that the intra-retinal layer boundaries between automated and manual segmentations matched well. The algorithm successfully segmented the intra- retinal layers in glaucoma, high myopia, and retinitis pigmentosa patients. The proposed automatic segmentation for intra-retinal layers provides a promising tool for quantitative analysis in clinical diagnosis and treatment.
