AIM: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation for refractory glaucoma after sequential failed trabeculectomy.
METHODS: Thirty - six patients (36 eyes) with prior failed sequential trabeculectomy who underwent Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation were included. The intraocular pressure ( IOP), best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and complications were ovserved and all the patients were followed up at least for 12mo.
RESULTS: Mean preoperative IOP was 35. 20±7. 28mmHg and reduced to 10. 15±3. 34, 11. 23±3. 56, 15. 63±5. 72, 17. 17±5. 47, 17. 73±6. 23,19. 76±5. 43mmHg at 1, 2wk, 1, 3, 6 and 12mo after surgery, which was significant different from the preoperative level (t = 12. 643, 11. 837, 10. 324, 8. 839, 8. 462, 8. 046, all P < 0. 05 ). Visual acuity was not significantly different between pre - operation and 12mo post- operation ( Z = - 0. 420, P > 0. 05). At 12mo after operation, the complete success rate reached 78% and the conditional success rate reached 92%. There were 5 eyes complicated with shallow anterior chamber, 3 eye complicated with anterior chamber hemorrhage, which all recovered after additional treatments. Late complications included valve exposure and encapsulated cystic blebs around the plate. Severe corneal endothelium loss occurred in 1 patient.
CONCLUSION: Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation is effective in reducing IOP at 1-year follow-up in refractory glaucoma patients with prior sequential failed trabeculectomy, but we should fully understand and attach great importance to all kinds of complications that may occur.

China Pharmacist 2015;(2):241-243
Objective:To study the scavenging activity of macroporous resin isolate of gynostemma pentaphyllum on free radical DPPH. Methods:The extract of gynostemma pentaphyllum via water boiling and precipitation with ethanol was separated by macro-porous resin respectively eluted by water, 40% ethanol and 80% ethanol to obtain the corresponding isolates. The antioxidant activity of the three isolates was determined by free radical DPPH systematic method, and the results were compared with that of gallic acid and ascorbic acid. Results: The 50% inhibitory concentration on free radical DPPH of the three isolates was 0. 081 2, 0. 028 7 and 0. 541 0 g·L-1 ,respectively. The 40% ethanol isolate had the highest saponins concentration. Conclusion:The macroporous resin i-solate with different solvent all shows antioxidant activity and the 40% ethanol isolate has the strongest effect, suggesting saponins may be the active substances for the lipid-lowering, hypoglycemic and free radical scavenging activities.

Journal of Experimental Hematology 2011;19(3):557-560
Relapse, which puzzled several generations of hematologists, is the bottle-neck of radical treatment for leukemias. The progress of Human Microbiome Project at the beginning of 21st century suggested that human body was a super-organism constituted by the core of human cells and symbiotic microorganisms. The elucidation and characterization of endogenous retrovirus and prion protein suggested the possible effects of co-evolutional microorganisms on human health. Recently, the elucidation of the roles of tunneling nanotubes in intercellular communication and transportation suggested a novel way for cellular communication and transport of oncogenic materials. The role and significance of in vivo cell fusion have been studied in more detail. On the other hand, donor cell leukemia was reported. All of these approaches provide novel insights for studying the mechanism of leukemia relapse. Based on previous work, the authors suggest the hypothesis: there are two possible mechanisms for the relapse of leukemias: the minimal residual disease (MRD) and intercellular transportation of oncogenic materials.

OBJECTIVETo describe the current status of mortality breast cancer in Chinese females between 2004 and 2005, as well as its developing trend from 1973 to 2005.
METHODSThe data of female breast cancer deaths and number of female under exposure were collected through the Third National Mortality Retrospective Sampling Survey, which covered a total of 69 690 241 person years of females. The data was descriptively analyzed, and compared with the data of time-trend of breast cancer mortality in the previous two surveys in 1973 - 1975 and 1990 - 1992 respectively.
RESULTSThe crude mortality of female breast cancer in China in 2004 - 2005 was 5.90 per 100 000 (4112/69 690 241), ranking the sixth most common cancer death in Chinese females, and accounted for 5.90% (4112/69 667) of all female deaths from cancer. The crude mortality of female breast cancer was 6.86/100 000 (1777/25 900 856) in the eastern China, 5.91/100 000 (1431/24 225 738) in the central China and 4.62/100 000 (904/19 563 647) in the western China. The age-standardized mortality among Chinese standard population of female breast cancer in urban area (4.91/100 000, 1899 death cases) was 1.44 times higher than that in rural area (3.42/100 000, 2213 death cases). The crude mortality increased 99.99% from 1973 - 1975 (2.95/100 000) to 2004 - 2005 (5.90/100 000), the absolute figure increased by 2.95/100 000. The age-standardized mortality among Chinese standard population increased 37.85% from 1973 - 2005 (2.88/100 000) to 2004 - 2005 (3.97/100 000), the absolute figure increased 1.09/100 000.
CONCLUSIONThe mortality of female breast cancer in urban area was higher than that in rural area, and it decreased from the eastern China, to the central China and to the western China in turn. The mortality of female breast cancer has constantly increased in China since 1973.

Chinese Journal of Nephrology 2016;32(3):173-179
Objeetive To explore the effects of renal artery calcification on the progression of diabetic nephropathy (DN),the activation and its role of bone morphogenetic protein 2(BMP2) signal pathway in renal artery of rats. Methods Sixty male SD rats were randomly divided into control group(CON group),DN group and DN with vascular calcification group (DN+VDN group).Rats of group DN and DN + VDN were fed with high sugar and fat diet and injected with streptozocin (STZ) into abdominal cavity to induce diabetes. After diabetic models were successfully made, rats of group DN+ VDN were treated by vitamin D3 plus nicotine. The rats were sacrificed at 8th,12th and 16th week respectively and the levels of renal function, blood glucose and 24 h urinary protein (24-h Upro) were measured. The pathologic changes to the renal artery were observed by yon-Kossa staining and the calcium content was detected by calcium assay kit.The pathologic changes to the kidney were observed by HE.Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the protein expression of BMP2/Smad1/Runx2/ Osterix signal pathway in the renal artery and real-time PCR were applied to detect the mRNA expression levels of BMP2 and Runx2.Results The calcium content and the deposition of black granules in DN group were significantly higher than those in group CON and lower than DN + VDN group at each time point (P < 0.05).The renal function indices in group DN and group DN+VDN were gradually increased in 8th,12th and 16th weeks, and were higher than those in group CON (P < 0.05).Compared with that in DN group, although the level of BUN,Scr,Cys C and 24-h Upro in DN+VDN group rats were higher at different time point, the level of Cys C at each time point and the level of 24-h Upro in the 16th week showed significant differences (P < 0.05).The pathological damages of the kidney in group DN and DN+VDN showed a continual worsening trend and the pathological changes of the kidney in group DN+VDN were more serious than those in group DN.Furthermore, the levels of BMP2/Smad1/Runx2/Osterix signal protein and BMP2,Runx2 mRNA in DN rats were higher than those in CON group, lower than DN+VDN group at each time point (P < 0.05).Correlation analysis demonstrated that calcium content was positively correlated with serum BUN,Scr,Cys C,24-h Upro and the expression of BMP2,Runx2 mRNA (r=0.835,0.705,0.829,0.897,0.641,0.683,P < 0.01,respectively).Conclusion Renal artery calcification may participate in and promote the progression of DN,and the BMP2 signal pathway may be an important regulating factor in DN with renal artery calcification.
