Objective To investigate the effect of complementary dynamic scalp acupuncture on motor function in stroke. Methods 36 stroke patients were randomly allocated to control group (n=19) and treatment group (n=17). The control group received traditional scalp acupuncture and rehabilitation training, while the treatment group received scalp acupuncture and rehabilitation training in the same time, for one month. Their motor function and activities of daily living (ADL) were assessed with the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), Wolf Motor Function Test (WMFT) and modified Barthel Index (MBI) before and after treatment, respectively. Results The scores of FMA, WMFT and MBI increased significantly in both groups after treatment (P<0.01). The difference of scores of FMA of the lower extremities and MBI was statistically significant between the two groups after treatment (P<0.05), while the difference of scores of FMA of the upper extremities and WMFT was not (P>0.05). Conclusion Complementary dynamic scalp acupuncture is more effective on lower limbs motor function and activities of daily living in stroke patients.

BACKGROUND:How to promote wound healing is always the research focus of the surgical physicians in the clinic. Recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) can effectively promote wound healing. However, as a biological agent, it is easy to be decomposed under normal temperature.
OBJECTIVE:Toexplorethe mechanisms underlying the promotion of wound healing in the back of rabbits by bletila carrying exogenous rhEGF.
METHODS:Model rabbitswith ful-thickness skin defects in the back were treated with bletila carrying exogenous rhEGF (combined treatment group), bletila, rhEGF, or saline (control group).
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The time of wound healing was the shortest (P< 0.05) and the wound healing rate was the highest (P< 0.05) in the combined treatmentgroup. On postoperative days 3 and 10, newly formed granulation tissue, capilaries, and colagenous fibersshowed by hematoxylin-eosin staining staining and Masson staining and the strongest immunoreactivity of vascular endothelial growth factor determined by immunohistochemical staining were found in the combined treatment group (P< 0.05). These findings confirm that bletila carrying exogenous rhEGF promotes wound healing by accelerating the forming of granulation tissue, new-born capilaries, and colagenous fibers, and the effects are superior to either of them alone.

Chinese Journal of General Surgery 2001;0(07):-
Objective To study the protein components of the secretion of the proximal trunk of transected peripheral nerve and the effect of the secretion on the growth of motor neuron. Methods After the sciatic nerves of rats were transected, the proximal trunk secretion collecting compartment (P-SCC), distal trunk SCC (D-SCC) and (proximal) plus distal trunk SCC (PD-SCC) were set up. The protein components of the solution in the 3 types SCC were analyzed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and mass spectrum. And the effect of 3 kinds solution on the growth of motor neuron was tested by the motor neuron culture respectively. (Results) All the P-SCC, D-SCC and PD-SCC were filled with light yellow, clear fluids. The protein (concentration) was (5.45?1.2)mg/ml,(3.87?0.7)mg/ml and (5.68?1.5)mg/ml in the solution of PD-SCC, P-SCC and D-SCC (respectively). The protein patterns of the 3 solution were similar, and the detected (protein) spots were 1098?34,985?47 and 1021?36 spots in the solution of P+D-SCC, P-SCC and D-SCC (respectively). Most of the protein spots (distributed) in the rangs of MV 25-90KD and PH 4-8. The results of motor neuron culture demonstrate that the number of survival cells, cell area, neurite length and OD value of experimental groups(including mix group, (proximal) group and distal group) are generally higher than control group. But there is no obvious difference between the three experimental groups. Conclusions (1)The proximal trunk of transected sciatic nerve had the similar secretive ability as the distal nerve trunk.(2)(Protein) image of the 3 kinds of SCC solution showed that proteins from the three SCC solution were homologous. (3)All the 3 kinds of SCC solution could promote the growth and activity of motor neuron, and there was no difference in function between P-SCC and D-SCC solution.

Ginseng saponins are a type of important active substances in the ginseng genus plants. They have notable pharmacological activities of antineoplastic, neuroprotective, and hepatoprotective activities, which have been drawn more attention to obtain minor ginsenosides by all kinds of methods. In this review, we discussed the latest progress for enrichment of minor ginsenosides by biological transformation of major ginsenosides. At the same time, we have a brief outlook of the research at bioconversion of ginseng saponins.

The coding sequence for the mature peptide of porcine lactoferrin (Plf) was synthesized according to the codon usage of lactobacillus, to establish optimized porcine lactoferrin Lactobacillus expression system. The gene was ligated into the Xho I/BamH I site of Lactobacillus expression vector pPG612.1 and the recombinant plasmid pPG612.1-plf was transformed individually into Lactobacillus casei ATCC393, Lactobacillus pentosus KLDS1.0413, Lactobacillus plantarum KLDS1.0344 or Lactobacillus paracasei KLDS1.0652 by electroporation. After induction with xylose, expression of the recombinant proteins was detected by Western blotting and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Secretion of recombinant Plf proteins from four recombinant species was determined quantitatively by ELISA. The antibacterial activities of recombinant proteins were measured by agar diffusion method. The result shows that Plf was correctly expressed in four species of recombinant lactobacillus, with molecular weight of about 73 kDa. The expression levels in recombinant Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus pentosus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus paracasei were 9.6 μg/mL, 10.8 μg/mL, 12.5 μg/mL and 9.9 μg/mL, respectively. Antimicrobial activity experiment shows that the recombinant proteins were active against E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria, Pasteurella. The recombinant Plf expressed by recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum showed the best antibacterial activity among all recombinant lactobacillus species. These data represent a basis for the development and application of porcine lactoferrin from recombinant lactobacillus.

Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2006;4(5):267-270
Objective: According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine, the effect of cervical stimulation on autonomic nervous system activity in humans was investigated. Methods: Healthy young male volunteers were selected as subjects of the trial. The upper cervical spine (C2-5) was stimulated bilaterally with spinal manipulation, and changes in heart rate and heart rate variability were calculated as measures of effects on autonomic nervous system tone. Results: Thirty healthy young male volunteers were tested. It was found that heart rate decreased (R-R interval prolonged) significantly. SDNN and total power spectrum increased significantly, indicating an increase in sympathetic tone. Conclusion: Cervical manipulation can regulate the autonomic nervous system tone in healthy young men, and it suggests a possibility of treating cardiovascular diseases such as arrhythmia with cervical manipulation.

Objective To test and eva1uate the abi1ity of three potential chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) barcoding sequences; To find new methods to identify the species of gardenia. Methods Three cpDNA sequences were amplified and sequenced by universal primers of matK, rbcL and psbA. By comparing PCR amplification efficiency, length, intra-and inter-specific divergence, and barcoding gap, BLAST and DNA MAN were used to evaluate these loci. Results The amplification efficiency of 5 samples from 3 gardenia species was 100%. Analysis of the intra-and inter-specific divergence of matK among the sequences showed that barcoding gap was superior to psbA and rbcL, with higher identification efficiency. Conclusion Gardenia jasminoides Ellis can be better identified by matK sequence.
