Chinese Journal of Medical Instrumentation 2006;30(6):416-430
As it is impossible for an active catheter with a very small space to accommodate overmany lead wires in minimally-invasive surgery, a matrix network system is presented, in this paper, to control SMA actuators using minimum lead wires. Pulse current is adjusted by pulse width modulation (PWM) signals from the single-chip processor. In addition, multiple SMA actuators' cooperation helps the active catheter to succeed in guiding motion.

Objective To explore the activation and function of Janus protein-tyrosine kinase (JAK)/ signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT1) signal transduction pathway in kidney, lung and brain of MRL/lpr mice. Methods MRL/lpr mice with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were studied at the age of 12 weeks up.Non-SLE MRL/lpr mice were used as controls. We used phosphospecific antibodies to detect STAT1 activation in kidney, lung and brain by immunohistochemistry and Western blots.Gene expression of the STAT induced feedback inhibitors of cytokine signaling 1 (SOCS-1) was investigated by SYBR green I real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Results Phosphorylation of STAT1 protein was markedly activated in these three organs, although renal and pulmonary STAT1 activation were much more evidently activated.SOCS-1 gene expression increased in all three organs, while renal SOCS-1 gene expres- sion increased less than lung and brain. Conclusion The activation of JAK/STATI signal transduction path- way may be pathogenic in the organ involvement and progression of SLE.The pathogenesis of lupus nephritis may also be associated with the down-regulation of SOCS-1 feedback inhibition.

Objective To explore the relationship between the expression of Cyr61 and the chemosensitivity, apoptosis of human glioma U251 cells by decreasing Cyr61 gene expression by RNA interference. Methods One pair of DNA template coding siRNA was synthesized against U251 to reconstruct pRNA-Cyr61, which was transfected into U251 cells. The Cyr61 expression in U251 cells was transfected with pRNAT-Cyr61, and it was detected by RT-PCR and Western blot. MTT and flow cytometry (FCM) were used to observe the growth inhibiting ratio and apoptosis rate induced by cisplatin or temozolomide in U251 cells. Results RT-PCR and Western blot analyses demonstrated that pRNAT-Cyr61 could significantly inhibit the expression of Cyr61 in U251 cells (P<0.01); MTT and FCM showed that when U251 cells were exposed to cisplatin or temozolomide, the growth inhibiting ratio and apoptosis rate of pRNAT-Cyr61 transfected cells were significantly increased compared with those of control group and negative group (P<0.01). Conclusions pRNAT-Cyr61 can significantly inhibit the expression of Cyr61, increase chemosensitivity and apoptosis rate of U251 cells in vitro.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2006;44(2):114-117
OBJECTIVEObesity is an important risk factor of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Adipocyte is a cell that can actively secrete a series of factors to regulate the pathway responsible for energy balance. Resistin is one of these factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate possible correlation between resistin and certain parameters, including body parameters and other parameters of glucose metabolism and roles of resistin in hyperinsulinemia or insulin resistance in obese children.
METHODSThe serum resistin concentration was measured in 34 obese children (18 boys, 16 girls; age 8.9-15.9 years) and 31 normal subjects (16 boys, 15 girls; age 7.8-14.5 years) by using ELISA. Anthropometric parameters, fasting glucose and insulin were measured in all subjects. Insulin resistance was assayed by homeostasis model assessment ratio (HOMA-R). Beta cell function was determined by using homeostasis model assessment beta cell (HOMA-beta). Correlation analysis was performed between resistin and other parameters.
RESULTS(1) The serum resistin concentration (common logarithmic transformation) was 3.1 +/- 0.5 in obese subjects and 2.7 +/- 0.8 in normal subjects. (P < 0.05). (2) The serum resistin concentration was not significantly correlated with sex, age, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, but was positively correlated with BMI, percent body fat (BF%), waist-hip ratio (WHR) (r = 0.299, r = 0.304, r = 0.322, P < 0.01); and positively correlated with fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA-R (r = 0.299, r = 0.303, r = 0.324, P < 0.05), but not significantly correlated with HOMA-beta. (3) Multiple linear regression analysis showed that only HOMA-R was the factor that significantly influenced resistin, R(2) = 0.105, the standard partial coefficient was 0.279 (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONSThe serum resistin concentration in obese children were higher than that in normal children. The serum resistin concentration significantly correlated with the degree of obesity and the distribution of fat. Resistin is probably related to occurrence of hyperinsulinemia and/or insulin resistance in obese children.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the induction and culture of adventitious root of Panax notoginseng.
METHODThree ways, induction from the explants of three-year-old P. notoginseng. The explants of regenerated shoots and calluses, were used to induce adventitious roots. The effects of 2, 4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, indole-3-butyric acid and naphthylacetic acid on adventitious root induction were investigated respectively. The effects of four modes of separating adventitious roots from the parent tissues on culture in vitro were compared.
RESULTAdventitious roots were successfully induced by three methods, of which the young flower bud callus was the best material for the induction of adventitious root. Indole-3-butyric acid possessed the strongest potency for induction. The liquid culture system was established by continuous culture of adventitious roots together with their parent tissues before separated.
CONCLUSIONThe acquisition and culture in vitro in liquid culture system of adventitious roots of P. notoginseng lay a foundation for the next investigation.
