2.Epigenetic modifications in diabetic retinopathy
Chinese Journal of Ocular Fundus Diseases 2016;32(2):213-217
Epigenetic modifications such as DNA methylation, histone post-translational modifications,non-coding RNA are reversible, heritable alterations which are induced by environmental stimuli.Major risk factors of diabetes and diabetic complications including hyperglycemia, oxidative stress and advanced glycation end products, can lead to abnormal epigenetic modifications in retinal vascular endothelial cells and retinal pigment epithelium cells.Epigenetic mechanisms are involved in the pathogenesis of macular edema and neovascularization of diabetic retinopathy (DR),as well as diabetic metabolic memory. The heritable nature of epigenetic marks also plays a key role in familial diabetes mellitus.Further elucidation of epigenetic mechanisms in DR can open the way for the discovery of novel therapeutic targets to prevent DR progression.

Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry 2009;37(7):943-949
The technologies that we call cell micropatterning allow the control of the shape and size of cell adhesion. Combination of micro/nano technology, surface chemistry, electrochemistry and photochemistry enables us to control the adhesion, migration, differentiation of cells and the interactions between different types of cells. These methodologies bring about a new platform for the studies of cell biology. A number of techniques for cell patterning and compares their advantages and disadvantages were reviewed in this article. The applications of cell micropatterning, including those for fundamental studies in cell biology, tissue engineering and cell-based biosensors were also discussed.

Chinese Pharmacological Bulletin 2014;(8):1041-1044
Tanshinones are a large class of hydrophobic natural products isolated from traditional Chinese herb Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge and related plants. Tanshinones include tanshinone ⅡA, cryptotanshinone, tanshinone I, dihydrotanshinone, and so on. Both the tanshinones and the salvianolic acids have been identi-fied as the characteristic and main active ingredients of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge with cardiovascular protective activities. Ac-cumulated data in recent years have revealed that tanshinones possess remarkable anti-cancer activities both in vivo and in vitro. In this review, we summarize the latest progress of the an-ti-cancer effect and the underlying mechanisms of tanshinones, particularly with emphasis on tanshinone ⅡA, which might pro-vide reference for the further research and development of these compounds.

A 13-year-old girl suddenly developed hypertrophic rough-surfaced plaques on both elbows, knees and ankles without obvious precipitating factors at 3 years of age.Because there was no subjective symptom or other discomfort, no treatment was given.Thereafter, the lesions neither faded nor spread.Skin examination revealed lesions covered with 1-2 mm-sized keratotic papules on the elbows and knees, which were clustered together and confluent in some areas.Circular keratotic plaques were observed on the ankles.Histopathology showed epidermal hyperkeratosis with mild parakeratosis, follicular keratotic plugs, acanthosis, broadened dermal papillae, telangiectasis and perivascular mononuclear infiltration in dermal papillae, infiltration of a few nonspecific cells in the superficial dermis.According to the clinical manifestations and histopathological findings, the patient was diagnosed with keratosis circumscripta, and treated with oral vitamin A and topical halometasone cream and urea-vitanmin E cream. The degree of skin hypertrophy and roughness was decreased after 15 days of treatment, but increased 1 month after drug withdrawal.

ObjectiveTo investigate the effects of epidermal growth factor (EGF),fibroblast growth factor(FGF), and bovine serum on proliferation and apoptosis of the cultured fetal human retinal cells.MethodsEGF and FGF were added or not to the medium of fetal human retinal cells cultured by bovine serum in vitro. The number of cells, bromodeoxyuridine(BrdU) incorporation and Tdt-mediated dUTP nick end labelling(TUNEL) were detected to determine the proliferation and apoptosis. Immunohistochemical staining of neuron specific enolase(NSE), Thy1.1, glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP) and scan electromicroscopy were performed to identify cell components. The expression of transcription factor c-fos, c-jun and apoptosis regulation factor bcl-2 and Bax were examined by immunohistochemical staining to explore the underlying mechanism.ResultsThe increased number of NSE and Thy1.1 positive cells and BrdU incorporation, and decreased apoptotic cells were found in the groups treated with EGF and FGF. Meanwhile, the up-regulation of c-fos, c-jun and bcl-2 were also found.ConclusionEGF and FGF can promote the survival and proliferation of cultured retinal cells by up-regulating the expression of c-fos, c-jun and bcl-2.

Objective To explore and assess NiTi shape memory alloys stent intraeustachian tube placement prevent and treat adhesive otitis media. Methods The patients were divided into 3 groups (A:56 cases of adhesive otitis media, B:27 cases of otitis media with effusion, C:52 cases as control). In all cases of eustachian orifices were inspected by endoscope. 2 autopsy eustachian tubes were dissected. NiTi shape memory alloys stent intraeustachian tube plasment was perfomed in 8 cases to prevent and treat adhesions of middle ear with seld-designed . Results The eustachian orifice can be divided into three types: wide, narrow and fissure like instolle. In group A, wide, narrow, fissure like showed 20, 31, 5; respectively in group B: 9, 13, 5; in group C: 45, 7, 0. There was significant difference in three gorup (A,B, versus C ? 2=29.66,25.44 respectively, P0.05). Autopsy of eustachian tube: cartilage length was 30 mm, trapeziform, floor width was 11 mm, tip width was 4 mm. 4 cases of adhesive otitis media gained good ventilation as during valsalva method with audiometry promotion 15-30 dB after NiTi shape memory alloys stent placements. Two of 4 cases of otitis media with refractory effusion, gained A-B gap close, follow up over 12 months; the other was good at valslva's and gave up ventilation tube. Eight case had no patulous and any side-effect after NiTi shape memory alloys placement. Conclusions Adhesive otitis media can be prevented and treated by placing NiTi shape memory alloys stent with no patulous or other side-effect.
