1.Effect of cartoon video-assisted preoperative interview on postoperative maladaptive behaviors of preschool pediatric patients

Objective To investigate the effect of cartoon video-assisted preoperative interview on the postoperative maladaptive behaviors of preschool pediatric patients.Methods One hundred preschool pediatric patients,aged 3-6 yr,weighing 12-28 kg,of American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status Ⅰ or Ⅱ,scheduled for elective strabismus surgery,were divided into 2 groups (n =50 each) using a random number table:cartoon video-assisted preoperative interview group (group Ⅰ) and routine preoperative interview group (group Ⅱ).In group Ⅰ,accompanied by the anesthesiologist,children and their parents watched the cartoon video designed for the perioperative process,and the anesthesiologist answered the questions that their parents had.After completion of tracheal intubation,dexmedetomidine 0.3 and 0.6 μg/kg were infused intravenously over 10 min in group Ⅰ and group Ⅱ,respectively.Three percent-4% sevoflurane was inhaled to maintain anesthesia.The development and degree of agitation during stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) were recorded.The emergence time and length of PACU stay were also recorded.Postoperative maladaptive behaviors were assessed with the Post-Hospital Behavior Questionnaire at 1 week after surgery,and the occurrence of behavioral changes was recorded.Results Compared with group Ⅱ,the incidence of emergence agitation was significantly decreased,the degree of emergence agitation was reduced,the emergence time and length of PACU stay were shortened,and the incidence of behavioral changes (4%) was decreased after surgery in group Ⅰ (P<0.05).Conclusion Cartoon video-assisted preoperative interview can effectively decrease the development of postoperative maladaptive behaviors of the preschool pediatric patients.
2.Extraperitoneal transumbilical single-port laparoscopic radical prostatectomy: A report of 11 cases

Objective To present our initial experience in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy performed through an umbilical incision using a home-made multichannel port. Methods From August 2009 to March 2010, we performed single-port laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in 11 patients with localized prostate cancer. A home-made multichannel port was inserted extraperitoneally through a 3-cm umbilical incision. The single port extraperitoneal procedures included obturator fossa lymphadenectomy, radical prostatectomy and urethro-vesical anastomosis, while the urethro-vesical anastomosis was performed by a slip-knot running suture technique. Data were collected and analyzed prospectively. Results All cases were completed successfully, without conversion to a standard laparoscopic approach or open surgery except adding an additional port in one case. The average operative time was 256 minutes (range195-315), and the mean blood loss was 90 ml (range 20- 180), without any blood transfusion. The postoperative hospital stay was 15.4 days (range13- 24), and the Foley catheter was removed 12 days after surgery. No intraoperative complications occurred. One patient developed a vesico-rethralanastomosis leakage, 2 had lymphatic leakage and 1 had urinary tract infection,all of the cases were managed successfully with conservative treatment. Histopathological results showed negative surgical margine and negative lymph node dissection. All patients had no biochemical relapse after an average follow-up of 7 months. Conclusions Single-port laparoscopic radical prosta tectomy is feasible, cosmetic and minimally invasive with a low complication rate and good short-term outcome. Additional investigation is needed to evaluate the long-term safety and oncologic adequacy of this new approach.
3.Activation of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 alleviates H O -induced injury in cardiomyocytes.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes of aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) expression in H O inducedcardiomyocytes oxidative stress injury.
METHODSCultured H9C2 cardiomyocytes were exposed to H O -inducedoxidative stress and the effects of the ALDH2 agonist Alda-1 and ALDH2 inhibitor Daidzin were tested on the stress level ofthe exposed cells. MTT colorimetric assay was used to assess the cell viability after the treatments. The oxidative stress level inthe myocardial cells was detected using DHE fluorescence staining, and the activity and protein level of ALDH2 were detectedwith spectrophotometry and Western blotting.
RESULTSCompared with normal control cells, Alda-1 treatment did notsignificantly affect the cell viability, oxidative stress level, or ALDH2 activity and protein level. H O exposure significantlylowered the cell activity and ALDH2 activity and protein expression and increased the oxidative stress level; Alda-1 treatmentobvious antagonized the effects of H O . Blocking ALDH2 with Daidzin produced similar effects to H O exposure on theviability, oxidative stress level, and ALDH2 activity and expression in the myocardial cells.
CONCLUSIONSH O exposure lowersthe activity and reduces the protein expression of ALDH2 in cardiomyocyte H9C2 cells, and activation of ALDH2 can alleviateH O -induced oxidative stress in the cells.
