BACKGROUND:Delayed onset muscle soreness is closely related to skeletal muscle micro-injury, but the exact mechanism of skeletal muscle micro-injury is not yet clear. OBJECTIVE:To observe the histomorphological and ultrastructure changes of skeletal muscle micro-injury models induced by eccentric exercise. METHODS: Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into quiet control group, immediately after exercise group, post-exercise 24 hours group, post-exercise 48 hours group and post-exercise 72 hours group. In the latter four groups, the rats were subjected to intermittent running on the-16° slope at a speed of 16 m/min: 5 minutes movement, 2 minutes rest and totaly 120 minutes. Rats in the latter four groups were observed immediately, at 24, 48, 72 hours after exercise. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:After eccentric exercise, the morphology and ultrastructure of rat’s skeletal muscle were both changed to different extents, and Desmin and Vimentin were dyed off for anti-desmin antibody staining at varying degrees. It indicates that one-time eccentric exercise can cause delayed skeletal muscle micro-injury.

Objective:To apply electropalatography(EPG) in speech training for the patients with misarticulations caused by abnormal palatolingual contact, such as palatalized misarticulation(PM) and lateral misarticulation(LM) because of cleft lip and palate. Methods: Four patients with cleft lip and palate averagely aged 12.5 years old were enrolled in this study. PM was found in all the patients with or without LM. Misarticulations of these patients were corrected by visual feedback of EPG in speech training. Speech intelligibility and electropalatogram before and after therapy were compared. Results: It was convenient for the patients to check their pronaciation by the visual feedback of EPG.Their speech intelligibility was improved and palatolingual contact were more anterior after speech training. Conclusion: EPG is a valuable instrument in speech training for patients with misarticulation

BACKGROUND:Structural and functional changes of endothelial cels are the common pathological basis of cardiovascular disease. Severe structural and functional damage of endothelial cels are found in patients with hypertension or coronary heart diseases.
OBJECTIVE:To explore a new treatment method for hypertension from the perspective of vascular endothelial progenitor cels.
METHODS: PubMed and Wanfang databases were retrieved using the keywords “hypertension, EPCs” and approximately relevant 200 English and 100 Chinese literatures were obtained. Forty-nine eligible literatures were screened finaly.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Endothelial progenitor cels have strong differentiation and proliferation capacities. This review may provide a new insight into potential sources of cels for diagnosis and treatment of hypertension.
6.Experimental study on effects of vitamin B(6) on dexamethason-induced palatal cleft formation in the rat.
Chinese Journal of Stomatology 2002;37(4):272-274
OBJECTIVETo evaluate whether or not administration of vitamin B(6) (vitB(6)) has preventive effects on cleft palate formation.
METHODSOn the 14, 15 day of gestation, the pregnant rats were treated with administration of vitB(6) (10 mg/kg weight im) before and simultaneously with dexamethason (DEX). Compared the palatal cleft incidence of their fetuses with those whose mother were given DEX only.
RESULTSTreatment with administration of vitB(6) before and simultaneously with DEX, the palatal cleft incidence of subject group fetuses (32.35%) was significantly less than that given DEX only (64.52%). The proportion of the palatal cleft type was also changed significantly.
CONCLUSIONSVitB(6) decrease both the incidence and the severity of cleft palate induced by DEX in rats, which indicates VitB(6) may have preventive effects on cleft palate formation.

BACKGROUND: Biodegradable internal fixation devices have been used in clinics. However, they can only be used for internal fixation of non weight-bearing bones. A new kind of biodegradable internal fixation device with high initial strength and slow early degradation, which can be used for weight-bearing bones, is required.OBJECTIVE: To test the initial strength and observe the degradation of human hair polylactic acid (HHPLA) composite rods.DESIGN: Repeated measurement designSETTING: Center of Orthopaedic Department, Zhujiang Hospital, Southern Medical University; Department of Human Anatomy of Southern Medical UniversityMATERIALS: The experiment was conducted in the Southern Medical University between September 2002 and October 2003. Totally 54 adult SD rats were recruited.METHODS: ①The shear strength, the bending strength and the bending modulus of 20 HHPLA composite rods were tested with the biomechanical testing system (MTS-858 Mini Bionix) to investigate the initial nechanical feature of HHPLA composite rods. ②A total of 108 samples of HHPLA composite rods, which were developed for internal fixation of fracture, were randomly implanted in bilateral dorsal subcutaneous tissue of 54 SD rats and taken out at weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 28 (6 rats at each time point). The weight losses were measured to understand the degradation of HHPLA composite rods in SD rats.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: ①Mechanical strength of HHPLA composite rods. ②Degradation in vivo of HHPLA composite rods.RESULTS: Totally 54 rats entered the result analysis. ①HHPLA composite rods has good initial mechanical strength. Its shear strength of the HHPLA rod was 241 MPa, bending strength was 358 MPa, and the bending modulus was 13 GPa. ②HHPLA was fairly degradable in SD rats.Degradation was slower in the earlier period than that in the later period.CONCLUSION: HHPLA composite rods have some fairly good characteristics of initial mechanical strength and degradation in vivo.

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of dural tenting suture and epidural drainage in craniotomy. Methods In 145 cases of intracranial lesions, dural tenting suture and epidural drainage were performed to prevent epidural hematoma. Results Postoperative computed tomography (CT) showed no epidural hematoma required surgery in both groups. Conclusion Both dural tenting suture and epidural drainage are effective in preventing epidural hematoma. Hemostasis is the key step. Dural tenting suture without epidural drainage relieves psychological stress. It decreases the risk of intracranial infection and avoids some unusual complications.
