Objective To study the potential effects of telomerase inhibitor on the apoptosis of bladder cancer cells. Methods A phosphorothioate oligonucleotide (PS ODN) with sequence 5′ d(TTAGGG) 3′, as the telomerase inhibitor, was incubated with a bladder cancer cell line EJ. Such treated cells were studied with many approaches for the telomerase activity, the growth status and the morphological changes. Results The PS ODN inhibited the telomerase activity in the cells, arrested the cell growth, and induced the apoptosis of the cells. Conclusions The apoptosis of bladder cancer cells could be induced by PS ODN with 5′ d(TTAGGG) 3′ sequence as a telomerase inhibitor.

Zhejiang province takes an innovative approach in its rural health service strategy featuring routine health examination, which proved an initial success.Intending to assess the effect and dilemma of such a system, and seek sustainable development in future,we made investigations in Pinhu and Xianju in Zhejiang province.Overall, rural health service strategy based on rural health routine examination,to some extent, improved patient-physician relationship, changed and strengthened their rural health concepts, and upgraded non-communicable disease control. Furthermore, the practice has economically and socially influenced rural health service institutions and rural physicians in terms of their concepts and methodology. There are also setbacks and problems in need of govemment support, programme improvement and resource optimization for further sustainability.

DTC is the most common endocrine carcinoma and its routine treatment consists of total thyroidectomy and 131I thyroid remnant ablation.Currently, standard follow-up for DTC comprises Tg measurement and neck ultrasound as well as an additional radioiodine scan when indicated. As thyroid cells are assumed to be the only source of Tg in serum, circulating Tg serves as an excellent marker of persistent or recurrent disease in DTC follow-up.With the development of highly sensitive Tg assays, now it is possible to detect very low Tg concentrations which reflect minimal amounts of thyroid tissue without the need for TSH stimulation. This review is to introduce clinical implications of highly sensitive Tg assays.

Objective To observe the effect of Shenxian Yiganling Tablets ( SYT) , a Chinese herbal recipe with the actions of tonifying kidney and removing toxicity, combined with HBsAg gene-modified dendritic cells (DC/HBsAg) on immune response and hepatocyte damage of hepatitis B virus (HBV) transgenic mice. Methods HBV transgenic mice ( Tg mice) were immunized with injection of DC/HBsAg ( 100 μg every three weeks) through caudal vein, and then were given intragastric administration of SYT in the dosage of 12.8, 23.5, and 47.0 mg/d for four weeks. HBV Tg mice splenic T cell cytokines of interleukin 2 ( IL-2) and interferon gamma ( IFN-γ) levels as well as serum alanine aminotransferase ( ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase ( AST) conents were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA) . Lactate dehydrogenase ( LDH) release assay was used to detect the in-vitro cytotoxic activity of splenic HBsAg specific T lymphocytes. Serum HBsAg level of HBV Tg mice was detected by ELISA after immunization. Results Compared with DC/HBsAg administration alone, DC/HBsAg combined with SYT could significantly increase HBV Tg mice splenic T cells cytokines IL-2 and IFN-γ levels ( P<0.05 or P<0.01) , increase the cytotoxic activity of HBsAg-specific T lymphocytes ( P<0.05 or P<0.01), increase the inhibition rate of HBsAg expression (P<0.05 or P<0.01), and reduce hepatocyte damage. Conclusion SYT could enhance the immune response of Tg mice to DC/HBsAg immunization, and relieve the hepatic damage, which enable the HBV clearance process out of hepatic damage in the case of anti-HBV activity of IFN-γbeing unaffected.

ObjectiveTo compare the values of serum citrulline, intestinal fatty acid binding protein (IFABP) and intes-tinal trefoil factor (ITF) in diagnosis of acute gastrointestinal injury in critically ill children.MethodsA total of 84 critically ill children were enrolled. The serum citrullin, IFABP, and ITF were measured by high performance liquid chromatography and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The testing results and clinical data were analyzed.ResultsCompared with non gastroin-testinal injury group, the serum citrulline level was signiifcantly lower and IFABP and ITF levels were signiifcantly higher in gas-trointestinal injury group (allP<0.05). In critically ill children, the serum citrulline level was negatively correlated with C-reactive protein, procalcitonin and hospitalization time (r=-0.36 to -0.31,P<0.01).ConclusionsThe levels of citrulline, IFABP and ITF have diagnostic values for acute gastrointestinal injury in critically ill children. The level of citrulline may relfect the degree of acute gastrointestinal injury in critically ill children.
