Objective To evaluate the surgical effect for congenital nystagmus (CN) with an abnormal head position in all three axes of a predominant head turn. Design Retrospective case series. Participants 11 patients with horizontal nystagmus and abnormal head position treated in Xingtai Eye Hospital during 2003-2008. All had an abnormal head position in all three axes with a predomi-nant head turn. Methods Recession of the yoke muscles responsible for the slow phase of nystagmus (one medial rectus of 6mm, and one lateral rectus 8 mm), and simultaneously resection of the yoke muscles responsible for the fast phase of nystagmus (the other lateral rectus 9 mm, and medial rectus 7 mm) were performed. The follow-up was from 6 to 20 months. Main Outcome Measures The visual acuity of both eyes in primary position, the degree of head turn, chin elevation or depression, head tilt. Results At the last follow-up, the all 11 patients undergoing the operation for CN gained two or more lines of Snellen acuity with both eyes in primary position for be-ing corrected best. The postoperative mixed head position of 9 cases got disappear or ≤ 10°. Of 1 case developed overcorrection of the head turn. 1 case has the head turn of ≤15°, and 1 case remained the head turn of 25°. Conclusion Recessions and resections of the horizontal yoke rectus muscles in nystagmus with blockage position, when the head turn predominates over the vertical and torsional components, are effective in diminishing the abnormal head position on all three axes, and improve the visual acuity with both eyes in primary position. Objective: To investigate the effect of tumor specific antigen of HCA520 on the proliferation of HEK293 cells and to obtain some functional implications for HCA520. Methods: MTT assay was performed with HEK293 stable cell lines transfected with pcDNA3-HCA520-flag construct. Cytokines probably involved in HCA520 enhanced proliferation were screened by RT-PCR, and effect of these cytokines on the HEK293 cell proliferation was further confirmed by MTT assay. Results: HCA520 significantly promoted the proliferation of HEK293 cells, which was at least partially attributed to the up-regulation of IL-6 in HEK293 cells by HCA520. Conclusion: HCA520 might accelerate tumorigenesis by promoting proliferation of cancerous cells.

We amplified genes encoding UDP-glucose dehydrogenase, ecohasB from Escherichia coli and spyhasB from Streptococcus pyogenes. Both ecohasB and spyhasB were inserted into T7 expression vector pRX2 to construct recombinant plasmids pRXEB and pRXSB, and to express in E. coli BL21(DE3). After nickel column purification of UDP-glucose dehydrogenases, the enzymes were characterized. The optimum reaction condition of spyHasB was at 30 °C and pH 10. The specific activity reached 12.2 U/mg under optimum condition. The optimum reaction condition of ecoHasB was at 30 °C and pH 9. Its specific activity reached 5.55 U/mg under optimum condition. The pmuhasA gene encoding hyaluronic acid synthase was amplified from Pasteurella multocida and ligated with ecohasB and spyhasB to construct the coexpression vectors pBPAEB and pBPASB, respectively. The co-expression vectors were transformed into E. coli BW25113. Hyaluronic acid (HA) was produced by biotransformation and the conditions were optimized. When recombinant strains were used to produce hyaluronic acid, the higher the activity of UDP-glucose dehydrogenase was, the better its stability was, and the higher the HA production could reach. Under the optimal conditions, the yields of HA produced by pBPAEB/BW25113 and pBPASB/BW25113 in shake flasks were 1.52 and 1.70 g/L, respectively, and the production increased more than 2-3 folds as previously reported.

Chinese Journal of General Surgery 2009;24(1):30-33
Objective To investigate the risk factors and clinical characteristics of deep venous thromboembolism (DVT) of the lower extremities in Chinese people. Methods The clinical manifestations and risk factors in 2742 DVT patients diagnosed by phlebography were retrospectively studied. Results DVT made up 22.39% of all the venous diseases of the lower extremity. The most common clinical presentations of DVT were swelling and pain (92. 34% ), varicose vein ( 32. 57% ), pigmentation (24. 95% ) and ulceration( 18.45% ). The left lower extremity was more frequently involved. The whole limb type was 60. 09%, 80. 23% DVT patients had identified risk factors including age over 40 years old (76. 29% ), history of major surgery ( 12. 18% ) and severe trauma ( 8.42% ), pregnancy and the puerperium ( 4. 87% ). The history of general surgery ( 26. 05% ), vascular surgery ( 23. 35% ), gynaecoiogy and obstetrics (20. 96% ), orthopaedics ( 16. 47% ) and urinary surgery (7.49%) was among the most common surgery. Primary hypercoagulable syndrome was identified in 0. 22% DVT patients. Conclusion DVT makes up 22. 39% of the disease of veins of the lower extremity. The most common clinical presentations of DVT were swelling and pain. The most common risk factors were age over 40 years, major surgery, severe trauma. Primary hypercoagulable syndrome is a heritage risk factor for DVT pathogenesis.

Objective This study aims to investigate the effect of Lipoxin A4 receptor on acute lung injury (ALI) induced by intestine ischemia-reperfusion (IIR). Methods Thirty-two 8-week old SD rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, intestine ischemia-reperfusion (IIR), IIR + BML111 (BML-111), Boc-2 + IIR +BML111 (Boc-2). BML-111 (1 mg/kg) was given intraperitoneally at the onset of reperfusion in the BML-111 and the Boc-2 group. Boc-2 (50 μg/kg) was given intraperitoneally after anesthesia in the Boc-2 group. Rats were subjected to superior mesenteric artery occlusion consisting of 45-min ischemia and 6-h reperfusion, and the sham laparotomy was served as controls. The lung pathology was assayed by the H&E staining. Lung water content was detected using dry/wet ratio. Concentrations of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in lung tissue were determined by ELISA. The protein expression of p38 MAPK and NF-κB of lung was assayed by western blot. Results IIR induced serious ALI, with poor lung pathology and increased lung water content, elevation of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels in lung, accompanied with activation of p38 MAPK/NF-κB pathway. However, BML-111 could inhibit the activation of p38 MAPK/NF-κB pathway, leading to the reductions of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 in lung and attenuation of IIR-induced ALI. Conclusion BML-111 treatment could attenuate inflammation in lung after IIR injury via inactivating the p38 MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway.
