OBJECTIVETo evaluate clinical outcomes of fixation for the treatment of radial head fracture with collapse of anterior articular surface.
METHODSFrom March 2006 to January 2013,17 patients with radial head fractures with collapse of anterior articular surface were analysed. According to the Mason classification, there were 12 cases with Mason type II fractures and 5 cases with Mason type III fractures. All the patients were treated with open reduction through posterolateral entrance of elbow joint and Herbert or titanium cannulated screw internal fixation.
RESULTSAll the patients were followed up, and the duration ranged from 6 to 18 months, with a mean of 11.3 months. According to the Broberg and Morrey score system, 2 patients got an excellent result, 12 good and 3 fair. There were no complications such as infection of elbow joint, nerve injury, non-union, traumatic osteoarthritis, heterotopic ossification and elbow instability. However, the postoperative activity range of elbow in the injuried side was less than that in the normal side.
CONCLUSIONRadial head fracture with collapse of anterior articular surface is easily misdiagnosed, and it can be treated with open reduction and internal fixation through posterolateral entrance.

OBJECTIVETo examine the effects of sodium phenylbutyrate on the apoptosis of human tongue squamous cancer cell line and expression of p21 and survivin genes.
METHODSThe inhibition effects of sodium phenylbutyrate on Tca8113 and human tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TCSSA) cell lines were detected by methyl thiazoly terazolium (MTT) and the apoptosis of the cancer cells after being induced by sodium phenylbutyrate examined by flow cytometry (FCM). The expression of p21 and survivin genes were observed with Western blotting and RT-PCR.
RESULTSCompared with control group, the level of p21 mRNA and protein of Tca8113 cellline increased to 0.09 ± 0.08 and increased 0.72 ± 0.10, that of TCSSA cellline increased 1.34 ± 0.12 and 1.56 ± 0.09 (P < 0.05). Compared with control group, the level of surrive mRNA and protein of Tca8113 cellline decreased to 1.10 ± 0.05 and 1.14 ± 1.10, that of TCSSA cellline decreased to 0.12 ± 0.08 and 0.94 ± 0.09 (P < 0.05). Sodium phenylbutyrate inhibited the cell proliferation, promoted cell apoptosis and arrested the cells in G₁/G₀ phase. The amount of p21 mRNA and protein were increased, and the expression of survivin gene was decreased.
CONCLUSIONSSodium phenylbutyrate exhibited remarkable inhibitory effects on human tongue squamous cancer cell proliferation and induced cancer cell apoptosis. The mechanism may be due to up-regulation of p21 gene and down-regulation of survivin gene. The mRNA level of p21 gene and survivin gene showed a strong correlation.

Objective To examine the association between folic acid supplements during peri-conception and the related adverse birth outcome. Methods Pregnant women who received first prenatal care at 4 municipal-level medical institutions in Maanshan, from Oct.2008 to Oct.2010 were selected as the target population. All participants were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire which including data on demographic characteristics, interval, complications and frequency of taking folic acid etc.,during pregnancy. The follow-up-records after delivery would include factors as:fetal weight, height, circumference of head, chest circumference of the neonates.Finally,4448 valid questionnaires were gathered, including 190 premature,147 small for gestational age and 104 low birth weight babies.Descriptive statistics and logistic regression models were used for data analysis. Results Data showed that the weight, height and head circumference of the fetels at birth among pregnant women who had taken supplementary standard folic acid during peri-conception period or only during the first trimester, were all better than those pregnant women who had not taken the standard folic acid supplements. After adjustment for potential confounders as gestational weeks, maternal age, mather' s education level, results from the logistic regression showed that intake of standard folic acid supplements appeared a protective factor for those babies who were smaller than the gestational age (RR=0.45,95% CI:0.24-0.86),at premature delivery (RR=0.52,95% CI:0.32-0.87) or with low birth weight (RR=0.39,95%CI:0.19-0.80).However,data from this study showed that provision of folic acid supplements to the pre-pregnant or at first trimester alone did not make obvious impact on those babies as prematured, small for gestational age and at low birth weight. Conclusion Standardized provision of folic acid supplements during peri-conceptional period could improve the outcomes of birth.
