Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2010;14(24):4557-4560
BACKGROUND: Chondron is a basic microanatomical unit of articular cartilage. lncreasing evidence suggests that the pericellular matrix (PCM) is a distinct functional compartment in articular cartilage, influencing the metabolic, micromechanical environment, and degeneration of chondrocytes. But the precise functions and action mechanism need further investigation.OBJECTIVE: To review the literature pertinent to the morphology, function, isolation of the chondron in articular cartilage, and its degenerative events during the progression of osteoarthritis (OA).METHODS: This review summarized the articles published in the PubMed database before July 2009. In addition, recent data and figure of our laboratory on the morphology and biomechanics of chondron and chondrocyte were supplemented. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The PCM is primarily characterized by the presence of type Ⅵ collagen, and these components are widespread in the expansive extracellular matrix (ECM) in newborns, while in mature the components are mainly localized to a narrow pericellular zone. The three-dimensional morphology of chondron has been recently quantified in situ with fluorescence confocal microscopy, and the mechanical properties of the isolated individual chondrons and their PCM are measured using the micropipette technique and atomic force microscopy. More studies have shown that the presence of the PCM in chondrons has a profound influence on chondrocyte gene expression. At the same time, structural, histochemical and biomechanical studies indicate the chondron and their PCM may undergo degenerative processes with osteoarthritis, similar to those occurring in the ECM, Although the precise function of the PCM is unknown, increasing evidence in vivo or in vitro suggests that the PCM is a basic microanatomical unit in articular cartilage, influencing the metabolic and micromechanical environment of chondrocytes.Department of Orthopedics, the Second Hospital of Shanxi Medical University, Shanxi Key Laboratory of Bone and Soft Tissue Injury Repair,Taiyuan 030001,Shanxi Province,China

Effects of microfiltration membrane adsorption for eight types of pesticides with diverse physicochemical properties on direct injection liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometric method ( DI-LC-MS/MS) were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption effects ( AE,%) on the loss of signal detection at concentration of 2. 5 μg/L ranged from 8%-92%, 0%-81% and 2%-59% for nylon (NYL), polyethersulfone ( PES) and hydrophilic polypropylene ( GHP) membrane, respectively ( accumulated volume of feed is 1 mL). The pesticides with higher octanol-water partition coefficient (lgKow) values appeared to adsorb onto the membrane surface more readily than those with lower lgKow. The AE was found to be alleviated as the feed volume of samples increased to 10 mL, except the case of profenofos adsorption on PES membrane ( AE=9%) . The effects of PES membrane on the eight pesticides at initial individual concentration of 0 . 25 , 2. 5 and 25 μg/L were also studied. The results showed that, the lower the initial concentration of pesticides, the stronger adsorption effect under the same filtration conditions was obtained. Besides, it was effective in eliminating the membrane adsorption effects by adding 40% methanol ( V/V) into water samples as a modifier, which could consequently improve the accuracy of DI-LC-MS/MS.

Objective To explore the accurate position for the intersect between the short axis of the tibial tray and patellar ligament through studying the relationship among the femoral epicondylar(FE) axis, posterior femoral(PF) axis, posterior tibial(PT) axis, patellar(PAT) axis and patellar ligament(PL). Methods Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of 40 knees are included in this study. Using the computer workstation, these axial scans were used to construct the FE axis,PF axis, PT axis, PAT axis and PL. Angles between the axes of the selected landmarks were calculated, and linear regressions were performed to assess the relationship between the axes. Template of the tibial tray were positioned along both the FE axis and PT axis and the resultant points of patellar ligament intersection were recorded, and the difference of the intersect was analyzed with the matched t test. Results Strong relationship were found between the FE and PAT axes(1.8?? 3.6?, R2=0.70), as well as between the FE and PF axes(6.1?? 3.0?, R2=0.79). When the tibial template was aligned along the FE axis, 65% of the cases were in an ideal position, and the intersect is at the 10%-60% width of the patellar tendon. When the PT axis was used, 35% were optimal, and the intersect is at the -15%-35% of the width. And the difference in the mean value of the intersect is of statistical significance. Conclusion During total knee arthroplasty, if the short axis of the tibial tray is aligned with the intersects of the PL between its midpoint of the medial third to a half of its entire width, the rotation of the tibial component will fit the FE and PAT axes closely, so the component's position is appropriate.
