Journal of Practical Medicine 2005;0(12):39-41
Background: "Bach thuan" is a hereditary remedy which was written by herbalist Cao Van Tan, who was from Luu Ve, Quang Xuong, Thanh Hoa. The remedy has been treated effectively many diseases including the diseases related to infection wounds. Purposes: 1. to evaluate the antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aerucinosa in experimental burned animals. 2. to find unwanted effect of the "Bach thuan" remedy on experimental burned animals. Method: identifying the sensitivity of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aerucinosa to the remedy. Conclusion: the remedy of “Bach thuan” had antibacterial effect to both Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aerucinosa. The remedy had effect of antimicrophyte to Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aerucinosa (ATCC 12228). With a dose of 25 mg/ml, the remedy killed 62.44% of bacteria after 4 days, 99.38% after 8 days of treatment. With a dose of 100 mg/ml, the remedy did not cause side effects

4.Initial result of community-based nutritional intervention with sprout powder in 0 to 12-month children in a rural area of Thanh Hoa province
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):58-61
The incidence of malnutrition in 0 to 12-month children is high in Thanh Hãa province. Use of intestinal enzyme aplase as an augment, combining hamlet health workers and families to construct the structure of diet for children with available foods can reduce the malnutrition incidence to lower than 30%. Beside this, the interventional activities to provide the nutritional knowledge with mothers can change the nutritional practice rapidly and solidly.

6.Heart and major blood vessel lesions in abdominal - thoracic injuries.
Journal of Practical Medicine 2002;435(11):56-58
From September 1994 to August 2000, there were 206 patients with abdominal-thoracic injuries who admitted the Popular Hospital. Among these, there were 22 patients (10.7%) included 20 males and 2 females had heart and major blood vessel injuries. Mean age of patients was 30 years. All of them were stabbed with knife. 2/22 patients had treated previously in the other hospital. 20 patients had the mean time from accident to admission was 1 hour and 14 minutes (ranged from 15 minutes to 3 hours). Among 12 deaths, 4 cases occurred before admission, 2 before surgical intervention, 5 during operation, and 1 in second day post-operation. So, there were only 11 patients underwent surgical treatment, included 2 patients with heart injuries and 9 with major blood vessel injuries. 10/11 patients gained good outcome after operation. 1 in 11 patients was dead from abdominal aortic injury.

8.Using linear discriminant analysis method basing on genetic algorithms to find out the role of clinical symptoms for taking differential diagnosis between typhoid fever and scrub typhus
Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2001;(11):24-29
Linear discriminant analysis method basing on genetic algorithms was used to find out the role of clinical symptoms for taking differential diagnosis between typhoid fever and scrub typhus. Clinical records of 526 patients suffering from one of those diseases were used as input data for algorithms. The results showed that the differential value of symptoms are as follows: roseola (4 points), infectious constitution (2 points), drum belly (2 points), ingestive disorder (1 points), decrease of white-blood cell count (1 point), congestion (-2 points), enlarge of lymph node (- 2 points), erythematous eruption (-3 points), eschar (-5 points). The diagnostic rule are a follows: total point >=3: typhoid fever, between 0 and 2 points: suggestion of typhoid fever, total point <=-3: scrub typhus, between o and -2 points: suggestion of scrub typhus. To re-test on 50 patients of those 526 patients randomly, the accuracy rate of this rule is at least 98%.

9.Mumps orchitis treatment with corticoids
Journal of Medical Research 2004;27(1):89-92
Based on the results of 20 cases with mumps orchitis who were treated with Prednisolon (25-30 mgs per day in 5 days) or Triamcinolon (5-6 mgs per day in 5 days), the author showed that corticoids could either release fever and pain within 24 hours or 48 hours, or reduce the swelling of orches faster in comparison with the other group of patients. Nevertheless, corticoids could not prevent the orches shrinking

10.Assessment of virulence and potential risk of direct transmission to human of 2004-2005 virus H5N1 in Southern Vietnam through surveillance and genetic analysis
Journal of Preventive Medicine 2005;15(6):5-10
Genomes of 24 human and avian H5N1 influenza viral strains in the Southern area of Vietnam during the 2004-2005 outbreaks were sequenced completely. All viruses containing multiple basic amino acids at the hemagglutinin cleavage site HA1-HA2 are associated with a highly pathogenic phenotype. A series of amino acid mutations located in NSl and PB2 proteins were associated with the possibility of efficient replication in mammalian tissue. The mutation in the receptor binding sites of HA that could affect binding process to human cells was found from isolates in 2004-2005 Avianflu outbreaks. All isolates are belonging to Z genotype. The findings indicated that H5Nl viruses in Vietnam have changed to be more infectious to human host in 2004-2005 Avianflu outbreaks.
