1.Premenstrual active treatment of patients with immunothrombocytopenic haemorrhage

A study on female patients with ages of 15-30, and immunothrombocytopenic haemorrhage has shown that the severe anemia occurred mainly due to metrorrhagia (80%). For patients treated actively by corticoids that platelet has been a good response, it should not use corticoids within continuous 6 months while they should have a treatment course before menstruation for a week and followed by 4 days. All 7 patients treated actively responded with corticoids.

2.Comparative study on astigmatic measured methods in children

The results are: astigmatism is a common refractive error which must be diagnosed accurately in power ans axis; there is close correlation between corneal and astigmatic eye; keratometry is a necessary method to assist objective refractive methods, on the other hand it is necessary to combine objective refractive methods with subjective methods in order define accurately astigmatism, especially in children

3.Studying on the features of anemia on the patients treated in Thai Binh General hospital

Background: Rate of anemia is quite high in hospitals. This condition occurs in all age groups, genders, occupations and all areas of the country. The assessment of the situation, degree, nature as well as classification of anemia is necessary for the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Objectives: To study the features of anemia on the patients treated in Thai Binh General hospital. Subjects and methods: the analytic descriptive study was carried out on 3522 cases who were treated in Thaibinh General hospital from May 1st, 2004 to April 30th, 2005. Results: The percentage of the anemic patients was 14.16% of the total patients in Thaibinh General hospital. The rate of the anemia of children was 57.61 % and the elderly was 19% of all anemic patients. The rate of mild anemia was 64.2% and the sever anemia was 14.9%. The rate of chronic anemia was 72.9%. The microcytic anemia was 45.94%, the macrocytic anemia was 0.57%. The anemia in the blood diseases and hematopoietic diseases were 8.38% including thrombocytopenic purpura, thalassemia, leukemia, aplastic anemia and hemophilia. Conclusions: The rate of patients with anemia in Thai Binh General Hospital in period of 2004 - 2005 was 14.16% in the total patients treated; among them the rate of anemia in children was high. 4.Respiratory airway resistance of asthmatic children from 6 to 10 years old at Respiratory department of Saint-Paul hospital

Background:Asthma is a chronic disease. Its characteristic is a chronic process of infection on respiratory leading to obstructed respiratory airway. In order to evaluate the obstructed respiratory disorder on asthma children, there are many various methods in which two methods are been applied widely: measure respiratory function and measure the resistance of respiratory airway. Objectives:This study aims to learn aboutthe respiratory airway resistance of asthmatic children from 6 to 10 years old at Respiratory Department of Saint-Paul hospital. Subjects and method: A retrospective, cross sectional and descriptive study was conducted on 135 children with asthma hospitalized at the Pulmonary Division at the Hospital Saint - Paul from January to October 2006. Results:- Value through thoracic pulmonary resistance in children asthmatics:The average resistance of the respiratory tract had inspiration: 7.31 \xb1 2.14 hPa.s L -1 . The average resistance of the respiratory tract had expiration: 8.30 \xb1 2.42 hPa.s L -1. There was no significant difference in the resistance of the respiratory tract between boy and girl children. Conclusion: Thoracic pulmonary resistance decreased with age from 6 to 10 years. After the inspiration of Ventolin, resistance of the respiratory tract decreased of 22.2% in the inspiration and 17.5 in expiration. The difference was significant.

5.Bone Mineral Density and Osteoporosis in Men with Ankylosing Spondylitis

Introduction: Ankylosing Spondylitis is a chronic rheumatic arthritis with specifically related to lumbar spine and femoral neck. The disease is more common in young men. Inflame and inactive condition of patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis leads to a low bone mineral density. Determining osteomalacia has clinical significance because of the relation to bone density.\r\n', u'Objectives: To study the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in Ankylosing Spondylitis and to investigate correlation between bone mineral density and age at the beginning of the disease, BASDAI, BMI\r\n', u'Subjects and methods:119 male patients with ankylosing spondylitis, mean age of 29.0 \xb1 10.8 as defined by New York criteria modified in 1984. Bone mineral density was measured at the lumbar spine and hip with Unigamma X ray - Plus. Results: 26.1 % of patients had lumbar spine osteopenia and osteoporosis, while 41.2% had femoral neck osteopenia and osteoporosis. The beginning of the disease was 22.1 \xb1 7.8 and had correlation with bone density in lumbar spine. Low BMI group had decreased bone density in lumbar spine and femoral neck (BMI < 18.5), (p=0.0001 and p=0,005, respectively). Patients with active disease had lower bone density than those with stable disease.\r\n', u'Conclusion: Ankylosing spondylitis patients have decreased BMD values at both the spine and femur. 6.Evaluation of the effectiveness of Interceptor bed net on controlling disease vectors Aedes aegypti in Vietnam, 2007

Background: Using insecticides is considered as a temporary and rapid method for interrupting the disease transmission through disease vectors such as dengue. The insecticide Fendona, when absorbed into bed nets, is slowly released and rapidly knocks out, kills or repels mosquitoes as they come into contact with the bed net. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of the Interceptor bed net (a unique textile-finishing product developed by BASF, Singapore PTE. LTD, that were coated with the Fendona insecticide) on controlling disease vector Aedes aegypti. Subjects and method: An experimental trial was carried out at the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology and in the field of Hien Giang commune, Thuong Tin district, Ha Tay province. The changes of efficacy of Interceptor bed net were compared by not washing with washing at the different levels. Results: The unwashed bed nets can knock out and kill Aedes aegypti mosquitoes by 50% after 20 minutes of exposure on every trial. About 90-100% of total mosquitoes were killed after the first 30 minutes of exposure. Bed net\u2019s efficacy remains until 24 hours of the trial. The recovery rate of the mosquito is 0%. The same results were also observed after 90 days, 36 days and 18 days of bed nets being laundered. However, after 9 day of washing, the bed nets can only kill the mosquitoes up to about 90-95% of the total after the first 30 minutes of exposure. It also reached 100% of killing after 24 hours. However, its efficacy was conversely reduced with regard to the increase of laundry times. Conclusion: The density of adult mosquitoes and larvae for Aedes aegypti was significantly reduced in the intervention areas, even at zero level in comparison to the control sites. The insecticide had no side-effect or any stimulation to users, community, poultry, cattle and environment in the intervention sites.

7.Anticancer effects of saponin and saponin-phospholipid complex of Panax notoginseng grown in Vietnam

Objective: To evaluate the antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo of saponin–phospholipid complex of Panax notoginseng. Methods: The in vitro cytotoxic effect of saponins extract and saponin–phospholipid complex against human lung cancer NCI-H460 and breast cancer cell lines BT474 was examined using MTS assay. For in vivo evaluation of antitumor potential, saponin and saponin–phospholipid complex were administered orally in rats induced mammary carcinogenesis by 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene, for 30 days. Results: Our data showed that saponin–phospholipid complex had stronger anticancer effect compared to saponin extract. The IC50 values of saponin–phospholipid complex and saponin extract for NCI-H460 cell lines were 28.47μg/mL and 47.97μg/mL, respectively and these values for BT474 cells were 53.18μg/mL and 86.24μg/mL, respectively. In vivo experiments, administration of saponin, saponin–phospholipid complex and paclitaxel (positive control) effectively suppressed 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene-induced breast cancer evidenced by a decrease in tumor volume, the reduction of lipid peroxidation level and increase in the body weight, and elevated the enzymatic antioxidant activities of su-peroxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase in rat breast tissue. Conclusions: Our study suggests that saponin extract from Panax notoginseng and saponin–phospholipid complex have potential to prevent cancer, especially breast cancer.
8.Antimicrobial resistance and serotype distribution of streptococcus pneumonia isolates among children under 5 years of age, Hai Phong city, Viet Nam, during the period of 2006- 2007

Background: Streptococcus pneumonia (S.pneumoniae) is the main cause of acquired pneumonia in the community along with otitis media, sinusitis, septicemia and meningitis. Objectives: The study determined antimicrobial resistance and serotype distribution of Streptococcus pneumonia isolates from hospitalized children at Hai Phong Children's Hospital, Vietnam. Subjects and method: From June 2006 to September 2007, 80 pneumococccal isolates were tested for susceptibility to the 13 antibiotics and 84 pneumococcal isolates were serotyped. Results:Seventy-five percent of strains showed multi-drug resistance. Ninety percent of strains showed resistance to penicillin (48% intermediate and 42% fully resistant). In addition, 100% of isolates were resistant to cotrimoxazole, 74% of isolates were resistant to cephalexin; 71 % of isolates were resistant to erythroomycin and 58% were resistant to cefuroxxime. Almost all the isolates were susceptible to amoxicillin, cefotaxime, ceftriaxone, ceefepime, ofloxacin and 100% of isolates were susceptible to vancomycin. Among the 84 serotypes, 82% were included in the 23 valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine including: 19F (30%), 23F (21 %), 14 (13%) and 6B (13%). Six other serotypes (13, 15C, 18, 11A, 15B and 6A) accounted for 12% of strains and 9 (11%) strains were untypeable. Conclusion: Pneumococcal antibiotics is spreading most rapidly among children in Vietnam, especially strains typs 19F and 23 F. 9.The role of rapid tissue expansion in separating xipho-omphalopagus conjoined twins in Vietnam

Conjoined twins are rare, and each set of conjoined twins has a unique conjoined anatomy. It is necessary to perform separation to increase the chance of patient survival. Tissue expansion is an advanced technique for providing sufficient soft tissue and skin for wound closure. We report the successful application of rapid tissue expansion in 10-month-old xipho-omphalopagus conjoined twins in Vietnam. A tissue expander was placed on the anterior body between the sternum and umbilicus with a baseline of 70 mL sterile saline (0.9% NaCl). The first injection into the tissue expander began on the 6th day after expander insertion, and injections continued every 2 days with approximately 30–70 mL per injection according to the expansion of the skin. The expander reached 335 mL after six injections and within 10 days. In order to prepare for surgical separation, expansion was completed on the 15th day after insertion. The expanded skin area was estimated to be 180 cm2, which was sufficient to cover both patients’ skin deficiencies. The twins presented for surgical separation 6 days following the completion of tissue expansion. Both babies were discharged in good health 1 month after separation.
