1.Contribution of the ultrasound to the diagnosis of spiral cystic ovary

During 1/1998 - 4/1999, there were 8 patients with the spinal cystic ovary in ViÖt §øc hospital. A study on 8 these patients were carried out to describe the clinical symptoms, the ultrasound image and differentiate diagnostic signs. The results: the ultrasound found the sound empty tumor in the next of uterine, the fluid surrounds the tumor and the wall of tumor was not thick. It should combine the clinical symptoms, with biological signs and ultrasound to precisely diagnose.

2.Value of transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound in the diagnosis of bladder tumor

43 patients with the bladder tumor received the clinical examination have shown that the rate of male/female was 6/11, average ages of patients were 60. 93% of patients had blood urination and stimulation syndrome of bladder. The transvaginal or transrectal ultrasound found that this was a comfortable method with no complication, and its invasion was less than transurinarytract ultrasound. The sensitivity of method was 95.2%. The limitation of this method was to find incompletely the number of tumors in some cases.

3.The effect of nitroglycerin capsule to decrease the arterial systolic pressure in heart failure patients with high pressure of pulmonary artery

In 35 heart failure patients (20 male, 15 female with average age 48±6) in the Hospital 103 from November 2001 to May 2002 the study was carried out. Doppler ultrasound on the heart identified high systolic pressure of pulmonary artery (SPPA). One sublingual capsule of nitroglycerin (0.5 mg) exested a decrease of SPPA in heart failure patient with high SPPA within 5, 10, 15 , 30 and 1 hour. The preparation was well tolerable, with no significant side effects

4.The value of computerized tomography in diagnosis of hepatic trauma

Background: Hepatic trauma is a common disease in surgical emergency. Nowadays, there are many means of diagnostic imaging such as ultrasound, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging.. but computerized tomography is more valuable in the diagnosis and treatment decisions. Objectives: To assess the value of computerized tomography in diagnosis of hepatic trauma. Subjects and method: To conduct computerized tomography on 36 patients with hepatic trauma (28 male, 8 female, aged 5-70 year olds), was diagnosed by ultrasound in Viet Duc hospital from January, 2005-June, 2005. Results: Major cause of the trauma was still due to traffic accidents (77.8%), followed by living and occupational accidents (61.5%). Using computerized tomography, there were only 12 patients undergoing surgery, the remainders were conservative treated. The common signs were: fluids in abdominal cavity: 33/36 patients (91.7%), without fluids in abdominal cavity: 3 patients. Parenchyma crush: 28/36 patients (77.8%). The most common lesion site was right liver. Diagnostic CT scans at 4 or more degrees was necessary during considering surgical indication for cases of having combined injuries, which can lead to hemodynamic dysfunction. Therefore, clinicians tend to use conservative therapy in hepatic trauma. Conclusion: CT scans was chosen as major examination to determine exactly level of lesions and to decide procedures.

5.Anticancer effects of saponin and saponin-phospholipid complex of Panax notoginseng grown in Vietnam

Objective: To evaluate the antitumor activity both in vitro and in vivo of saponin–phospholipid complex of Panax notoginseng. Methods: The in vitro cytotoxic effect of saponins extract and saponin–phospholipid complex against human lung cancer NCI-H460 and breast cancer cell lines BT474 was examined using MTS assay. For in vivo evaluation of antitumor potential, saponin and saponin–phospholipid complex were administered orally in rats induced mammary carcinogenesis by 7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene, for 30 days. Results: Our data showed that saponin–phospholipid complex had stronger anticancer effect compared to saponin extract. The IC50 values of saponin–phospholipid complex and saponin extract for NCI-H460 cell lines were 28.47μg/mL and 47.97μg/mL, respectively and these values for BT474 cells were 53.18μg/mL and 86.24μg/mL, respectively. In vivo experiments, administration of saponin, saponin–phospholipid complex and paclitaxel (positive control) effectively suppressed 7,12-dimethylbenz(a) anthracene-induced breast cancer evidenced by a decrease in tumor volume, the reduction of lipid peroxidation level and increase in the body weight, and elevated the enzymatic antioxidant activities of su-peroxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase in rat breast tissue. Conclusions: Our study suggests that saponin extract from Panax notoginseng and saponin–phospholipid complex have potential to prevent cancer, especially breast cancer.
6.Ethanol extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis protect against lipopolysaccharide-induced acute liver injury in mice

To investigated the protective potential of ethanol extracts of Scutellaria baicalensis (S. baicalensis ) against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced liver injury. Methods: Dried roots of S. baicalensis were extracted with ethanol and concentrated to yield a dry residue. Mice were administered 200 mg/kg of the ethanol extracts orally once daily for one week. Animals were subsequently administered a single dose of LPS (5 mg/kg of body weight, intraperitoneal injection). Both protein and mRNA levels of cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6 in liver tissues were evaluated by ELISA assay and quantitative PCR. Cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and nuclear factor-κB protein levels in liver tissues were analyzed by western blotting. Results: Liver injury induced by LPS significantly increased necrosis factor alpha, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6, cyclooxygenase-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase, and nuclear factor-κB in liver tissues. Treatment with ethanol extracts of S. baicalensis prevented all of these observed changes associated with LPS-induced injury in liver mice. Conclusions: Our study showed that S. baicalensis is potentially protective against LPS-induced liver injury in mice.
7.Treatment of splenic trauma in children: the experiences of Hue Central Hospital

Background: Pediatric closed abdominal trauma is a common disease in surgical practice, in which spleen is the most vulnerable organ. As adults, diagnosis of pediatric splenic trauma is not difficult but treatment attitude of splenic trauma in children having more important differences compared with in adults, tending to conservative treatment without surgery. Objectives: To assess the results of pediatric splenic trauma treatment in Hue Central Hospital from 2001 to 2005. Subjects and method: To study on 43 pediatric patients (23 male, 20 female), mean age 11.35\xb13.51 years, were diagnosed with splenic trauma due to closed abdominal trauma, treated in Hue Central Hospital from September, 2001 to September, 2006. Results: 72.1% hospitalized patients with maximum blood pressure in normal limitation. There was not a statistic significant association between hypotension and indicated surgery. The rate of patients with splenic trauma due to traffic accidents, living accidents and sport activities were 62.8%, 32.6% and 4.7%, respective. 2 patients with combined traumatic brain injury without surgery (4.65%), 3 patients with combined hand fracture (6.97%). 3 patients in conservative treatment group changed to surgery (8.33%). A total of 76.7% patients treated with successful conservation. Conclusion: More than 60% patients with splenic trauma caused by traffic accidents and having stable hemodynamic index during hospitalization. The difference between position of splenic trauma and rupture degree of spleen both in surgical treatment group and successful conservative treatment group is statistically significant.

10.Virological characteristics of cases of COVID-19 in northern Viet Nam, January–May 2020

Background:
Viet Nam confirmed its first case of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection on 23 January 2020 among travellers from Wuhan, China, and experienced several clusters of community transmission until September. Viet Nam implemented an aggressive testing, isolation, contact tracing and quarantine strategy in response to all laboratory-confirmed cases. We report the results of SARS-CoV-2 testing during the first half of 2020 in northern Viet Nam.
Methods:
Between January and May 2020, 15 650 upper respiratory tract specimens were collected from 14 470 suspected cases and contacts in northern Viet Nam. All were tested for SARS-CoV-2 by real-time RT-PCR. Individuals with positive specimens were tested every three days until two tests were negative. Positive specimens from 81 individuals were cultured.
Results:
Among 14 470 tested individuals, 158 (1.1%) cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection were confirmed; 89 were imported and 69 were associated with community transmission. Most patients (122, 77%) had negative results after two tests, while 11 and 4 still tested positive when sampled a third and fourth time, respectively. SARS-CoV-2 was isolated from 29 of 81 specimens (36%) with a cycle threshold (Ct) value <30. Seven patients who tested positive again after testing negative had Ct values >30 and negative cultures.
Conclusion
Early, widespread testing for SARS-CoV-2 in northern Viet Nam identified very few cases, which, when combined with other aggressive strategies, may have dramatically contained the epidemic. We observed rapid viral clearance and very few positive results after clearance. Large-scale molecular diagnostic testing is a critical part of early detection and containment of COVID-19 in Viet Nam and will remain necessary until vaccination is widely implemented.
