Intravenous injection of an extract of Ilex kudingcha leaves remarkably lowered the blood pressure of anesthetized dogs. Blood pressure were also lowered when given to unilateral kidney ligated consoious rats or SHR by gastric gavage. When given orally to adult or obesic rats, their abdominal subcutaneous fatty tissue deceased markedly. These results suggested that the extract posses antihypertensive and weight reducing activities, LD5, of the extract in mice was 3.6?0.6g/kg by ip route.

But without any effect when given intragastrically to conscious rats at 1.36g/kg (qid ? 3d ). When conscious spontaneous hypertensive rats were given this extract intragastrically at 1.08 and 2.16g/kg (qid ?5d) their BP decreased to 18.1 ?0.9 and 16.6? 0.7kPa from 24.3?0.5 and 24.3?0.6kPa res pectively (P
