3.Biocompatibility and orthopaedic applications of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy
Chinese Journal of Tissue Engineering Research 2010;14(25):4745-4750
BACKGROUND: In spite of some good successes of nickel-titanium alloy have been achieved in orthopaedic surgery, there are still serious limitations in clinical application, such as potential leakage of elements and ions, which could be toxic to cells, tissues and organs. OBJECTIVE: To review the research progress and the exiting problems of nickel-titanium shape memory alloy in orthopaedics and to provide theoretical supports for safe use of the alloy in clinical practice.METHODS: A computer-based online search of Springerlink and CNKI was performed for articles published between 2003 and 2010 both in Chinese and English. The search was conducted respectively with the key words of "nickel-titanium shape memory alloy (NiTi-SMA), biocompatibility, modifications, orthopaedics". Researches regarding nickel-titanium shape memory alloy and its properties, clinical applications, corrosion performance, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance by surface/structure modifications and the long-term challenges were included. Irrelevant or repetitive articles were excluded. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Nickel-titanium shape memory alloy has special value in medical field due to favorable shape-memory and superelasticity. However, due to the nickel toxicity, it is of great importance to elevate corrosion resistance of nickel-titanium alloy. The modifications of the alloy are the main focus and direction for further research.

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2001;7(2):71-72
ObjectiveTo study effect of head acupuncture combined with facilitation techniques on movement function, ADL, nervous function and prevention of complication, etc. after stroke.Methods120 stroke patients were divided randomly into four groups, group 1 for head acupuncture with facilitation techniques, group 2 for head acupuncture, group 3 for facilitation techniques, and group 4 for control. Fugl Meyer Assessment(FMA), Clinical Nervous Functional Damage Degree(CNFDD), Quality of Life(QOL), etc. were applied to assess movement and nervous function before and after treatment. ResultsThe scores of FMA, CNFDD and ADL rised more significantly in group 1, 2 and 3 than group 4 (P<0.01). The complications, such as shoulder joint semi dislocation, shoulder hand syndrome, decreased more obviously in group 1 than in group 2, 3 and 4(P>0.05).Conclusions Head acupuncture combined with facilitation techniques can improve the movement function and activity of daily living of the stroke patients, decreasing complication.
5.Children with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes syndrome:two cases report
Journal of Clinical Pediatrics 2015;(3):258-263
ObjectiveTo discuss the clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) syndrome in children. Methods The clinical features and treatment process of two children with MELAS were retrospectively analyzed.ResultsThe main clinical features of MELAS were stroke-like epi-sodes, seizure, visual anomaly and lactic acidosis. Cephalic MRI ifndings performed during episode periods were in accord with the typical radiographic features of MELAS. Gene testing on the two children and their mothers showed the point mutation of A3243G in mitochondrial genome. The symptoms were improved signiifcantly after energy supply and corticosteroid treatment. Conclusions MELAS syndrome is easy to be misdiagnosed due to the varied clinical features. The diagnosis depends on the musclebiopsy and gene testing. Corticosteroid therapy is effective for MELAS syndrome.
6.Retrospective analysis of 162 patients with urological trauma within a decade
Chinese Journal of Urology 2014;35(8):606-610
Objective To summarize the diagnosis and treatment of urological trauma. Methods One hundred and sixty-two patients with trauma of kidney, ureter, bladder or urethra were treated between March 2002 and March 2012.The diagnosis, treatment and outcome were analyzed. Results All patients were discharged with improved condition.Of 62 patients with renal injury,45 were treated with conservative approach,9 were treated with superselective arterial embolization, and 8 were treated with nephrectomy. All the 62 patients had normal renal function during the follow-up period of 3 to 24 months.Of 2 patients with ureteral injury, one was treated with cystoscopic ureteral catheterization, and another one with ureteric reimplantation.Neither of the 2 patients developed hydronephrosis during the one year follow-up period. All 6 patients with vesical injury were treated with open surgery, and they all had normal urinary function during the follow-up period of 6 to 12 months.Of 92 patients with urethral injury,6 were treated with urethral catheterization,18 with urethral realignment,35 with cystoscopic urethral realignment,4 with urethral repairment, and 29 with end-to-end anastomotic urethroplasty; 29 (32%) patients suffered from urethral stricture during the follow-up period of 6 to 24 months, and they underwent further treatment. Conclusions Urological trauma is quite frequent, and early diagnosis and treatment is important.Good outcomes will be achieved in most of patients by suitable treatments, but complications which need further treatments may occur subsequently in part of the patients.
