Objective: To examine the cytotoxic properties of both the kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seed extract and kenaf seed oil on human cervical cancer, human breast cancer, human colon cancer and human lung cancer cell lines.Methods:kenaf seed oil on human cancer cell lines was evaluated by using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide and sulforhodamine B assays. Cell morphological changes were observed by using an inverted light microscope.Results:The in vitro cytotoxic activity of the kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seed extract and cancer cell lines. Morphological alterations in the cell lines after KSE and KSO treatment were observed. KSE and KSO possessed effective cytotoxic activities against all the cell lines been selected.Conclusions:KSE and KSO could be potential sources of natural anti-cancer agents. Further The kenaf seed extract (KSE) exhibited a lower IC50 than kenaf seed oil (KSO) in all of the investigations on using kenaf seeds for anti-proliferative properties are warranted.
2.Beta-human Chorionic Gonadotropin-secreting Lung Adenocarcinoma

Overexpression of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) is frequently associated with germ cell tumours, especially choriocarcinoma. Ectopic secretion of β-hCG by non-small cell lung cancer is exceptional. We present an exceedingly rare case of pulmonary adenocarcinoma that secretes β-hCG. Our patient is a 62-year-old postmenopausal woman, a nonsmoker, who presented with a six-month history of progressive dyspnoea, associated with decreased appetite and significant weight loss. Her serum β-hCG was very high (11211.9 mIU/ml), which prompted investigations to exclude germ cell tumour. Radiological imaging revealed a 10-cm right lung mass with adrenal metastasis. No other focal lesions were detected. Microscopy of the lung biopsy specimen showed replacement of normal lung tissue by sheets of malignant cells, forming vague glands in some areas. Immunohistochemically, the malignant cells showed focal immunopositivity for thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF-1), napsin A, cytokeratin 7 (CK7) and β-hCG. A diagnosis of β-hCG-secreting pulmonary poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma was rendered. Serum β-hCG level decreased significantly to 168.6 mIU/ml after the first cycle of chemotherapy. In conclusion, β-hCG expression in lung cancer should be recognised to facilitate prompt diagnosis and initiation of appropriate intervention.
5.Risk factor profile and treatment patterns of patients with atherothrombosis in Singapore: insight from the REACH Registry.

INTRODUCTIONAtherothrombosis is the leading cause of cardiovascular mortality. The Reduction of Atherothrombosis for Continued Health (REACH) Registry provided information on atherosclerosis risk factors and treatment. Singapore was one of the 44 participating countries in the REACH Registry. The objective of this study was to determine the atherosclerosis risk factor profile and treatment patterns in Singapore patients enrolled in the REACH Registry.
MATERIALS AND METHODSThe REACH Registry is an international prospective observational registry of subjects with or at risk for atherothrombosis. Patients aged 45 years or older with established vascular disease [coronary artery disease (CAD), cerebrovascular disease (CVD), peripheral arterial disease (PAD)] or 3 or more atherosclerosis risk factors were recruited between 2003 and 2004.
RESULTSA total of 881 patients (64.4% male) were recruited in Singapore by 63 physicians. The mean age was 64 +/- 9.8 years (range, 45 to 95). Seven hundred and one (79.6%) patients were symptomatic (CAD 430, CVD 321, PAD 72) while 180 (20.4%) patients had > or =3 risk factors. Approximately 13% of symptomatic patients had symptomatic polyvascular disease. There was a high proportion of diabetes mellitus (57%), hypertension (80.6%) and hypercholesterolemia (80.1%). A substantial proportion of symptomatic patients were current smokers (14.1%). Approximately half of the patients were either overweight or obese [abdominal obesity, 54.3%; body mass index (BMI) 23-27.5, 45.9%; BMI > or =27.5, 23.3%]. Patients were undertreated with antiplatelet agents (71.9% overall; range, 23.9% for > or =3 risk factors to 84.7% for PAD) and statins (76.2% overall; range, 73.6% for PAD to 82.1% for CAD). Risk factors remained suboptimally controlled with a significant proportion of patients with elevated blood pressure (59.4% for > or =3 risk factors and 48.6% for symptomatic patients), elevated cholesterol (40% for > or =3 risk factors and 24.4% for symptomatic patients) and elevated blood glucose (45% for > or =3 risk factors and 19.8% for symptomatic patients).
CONCLUSIONEstablished atherosclerosis risk factors are common in Singapore patients in the REACH Registry; and obesity is a major problem. Most of these risk factors remained suboptimally controlled.

8. Anti-hypercholesterolemic effect of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) seed on high-fat diet Sprague dawley rats

Objective: To determine the antihypercholesterolemic effects of kenaf seed samples and compare with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug on serum lipids profiles and malondialdehyde (MDA) level in the rat. Methods: Kenaf seed oil (KSO), microencapsulated kenaf seed oil (MKSO), kenaf seed extract (KSE) and defatted kenaf seed meal (DKSM) were prepared and phytochemicals screening on these samples were done prior in vivo study. Phenolic compounds in KSE were quantified using high performance liquid chromatography. There were 40 (divided in eight diet groups of 5) male Sprague dawley rats adapted to normal standard diet or hypercholesterolemic diet (HD) with or without the treatment of these kenaf samples for 32 days. Results: All the kenaf samples exhibited to contain most of the major phytochemicals. KSE possessed gallic acid, tannic acid, catechin, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid, syringic acid, sinapic acid, ferulic acid, naringin acid, and protocatechuic acid. The significant higher (. P<0.05) serum total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and MDA levels in HD group without treatment than the normal control group suggested the hypercholesterolemia was induced by the incorporation of cholesterol into diet. KSE exhibited higher cholesterol-lowering properties due to the significant lower (. P<0.05) in serum triglycerides, total cholesterol and MDA levels. KSE showed the highest efficiency of cholesterol-lowering activity, followed by KSO, MKSO and DKSM. Conclusions: DKSM, MKSO, KSO and KSE appeared to have comparable anti-hypercholesterolemic effect with the commercial hypocholesterolemic drug. Hence, kenaf seed could be used as an alternative natural source to replace the synthetic hypocholesterolemic drugs.

The Singapore Health Services cluster (SingHealth) radiology film archives are a valuable repository of local radiological cases dating back to the 1950s. Some of the cases in the archives are of historical medical interest, i.e. cerebral angiography in the workup of patients with hemiplegia. Other cases are of historical social interest, being conditions seen during earlier stages of Singapore's development, i.e. bound feet. The archives form a unique portal into the development of local radiology as well as the national development of Singapore. A selection from the archives is published in 2020 in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the formation of SingHealth, the 55th National Day of Singapore, and the 125th anniversary of the International Day of Radiology.
