The purpose of this study is to analyze the plasma proteins of physical education athletic and general students (aged 19-22) before their breakfast by two-dimensional electrophoresis.
The results of this study, a protein which has not been found in any original report yet is detcted from physical education athletic students before breakfast.
This protein was not detected from general studenets before breakfast. This protein was detected at the position of pI5.0, molecular weight of about 70, 000 on two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophosis under non-denaturing codition, but it showed a molecular weight of about 30, 000 on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis.
As far as this research is concerned, neither special physical education athletic students and nor general students were observed in changes of two-dimensional electrophoretic patterns of blood cell cytosol and blood cell membrane proteins.
2.Analysis of human urinary proteins after physical exercise by two-dimensional electrophoresis under non-denaturing conditions.

A study was conducted to investigate the changes in human urinary proteins caused by physical exercise. Nine subjects (male middle-distance runners, 19-21 years) were loaded physical exercise with a 10km-run, and quantitative and qualitative changes in urinary proteins were examined using various techniques including polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, immunoelectrophoresis and two-dimensional electrophoresis. Total protein concentrations in urine from all subjects before exercise were very low (0.68-2.56mg/dl), but those were increased remarkably after exercise. Few proteins except for albumin were detected in urine before run by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis, however, a few proteins were observed after exercise in addition to a marked increase of albumin. Several proteins which were not observed in serum could also be detected in urine after exercise by two-dimensional electrophoresis under non-denaturing condition. It is considered that two-dimensional electrophoresis is a very powerful technique for analyzing dilute and complicated protein mixture in biological fluids such as urine.
3.Preoperative Estimation of Future Remnant Liver Function Following Portal Vein Embolization Using Relative Enhancement on Gadoxetic Acid Disodium-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate relative enhancement (RE) in the hepatobiliary phase of gadoxetic acid disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging as a preoperative estimation of future remnant liver (FRL) function in a patients who underwent portal vein embolization (PVE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 53 patients, the correlation between the indocyanine green clearance (ICG-K) and RE imaging was analyzed before hepatectomy (first analysis). Twenty-three of the 53 patients underwent PVE followed by a repeat RE imaging and ICG test before an extended hepatectomy and their results were further analyzed (second analysis). Whole liver function and FRL function were calculated on the MR imaging as follows: RE x total liver volume (RE Index) and FRL-RE x FRL volume (Rem RE Index), respectively. Regarding clinical outcome, posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) was evaluated in patients undergoing PVE. RESULTS: Indocyanine green clearance correlated with the RE Index (r = 0.365, p = 0.007), and ICG-K of FRL (ICG-Krem) strongly correlated with the Rem RE Index (r = 0.738, p < 0.001) in the first analysis. Both the ICG-Krem and the Rem RE Index were significantly correlated after PVE (r = 0.508, p = 0.013) at the second analysis. The rate of improvement of the Rem RE Index from before PVE to after PVE was significantly higher than that of ICG-Krem (p = 0.014). Patients with PHLF had a significantly lower Rem RE Index than patients without PHLF (p = 0.023). CONCLUSION: Relative enhancement imaging can be used to estimate FRL function after PVE.

We reported nine cases of metastatic skin carcinoma experienced at the Department of Dermatology, Obihiro Kosei Hospital during the period from April 1991 to March 1993. Lung was the most common primary lesion (four out of nine cases), followed by uterus (two) and stomach, breast, and kidney (one each). The clinical features of the metastases were classified into nodular (five cases), inflammatory (one case) and sclerotic (three cases) types. Peculiar zoster-like inflammation was seen in metastatic gastric cancer. Pathologically, adenocarcinoma was more common than squamous cell carcinoma. The average interval between the diagnosis of the primary cancers and the development of the skin metastases was about 30±25 months. The average life span after the detection of the skin metastases was 6.8±5.6 months. Poor prognosis of skin metastasis was thus reconfirmed.
5.PainVision Apparatus Is Effective for Assessing Low Back Pain.

STUDY DESIGN: Case series. PURPOSE: To determine the utility of "PainVision" apparatus for the assessment of low back pain. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: A newly developed device, the PainVision PS-2100 (Nipro, Osaka, Japan), has been used to assess the perception of pain in a quantitative manner. In the current study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of PainVision for the assessment of low back pain. METHODS: We assessed 89 patients with low back pain. The numeric rating scale (NRS) score, McGill Pain Questionnaire (MPQ) score and the degree of pain calculated by PainVision were measured twice at 4-week intervals in each patient. An electrode was patched on the forearm surface of the patients and the degree of pain was automatically calculated (degree of pain=100x[current producing pain comparable with low back pain-current at perception threshold/current at perception threshold]). Correlations between NRS and MPQ scores and the degree of pain were determined using Spearman's rank correlation test. RESULTS: There was a strong correlation between the NRS and MPQ scores at each time point (rs =0.60, p<0.0001). The degree of pain also showed a moderate correlation with NRS and MPQ scores at each time point (rs =0.40, p<0.03). The change in the degree of pain over 4 weeks showed a moderate correlation with changes in the NRS and MPQ scores (rs =0.40, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: PainVision as self-reported questionnaires is a useful tool to assess low back pain.

6.The Induction of Acupuncture Curriculum for Kampo Medicine Doctors

To help medical doctors practicing Kampo medicine suggest appropriate acupuncture treatments for individual patients, a study group made up of 7 acupuncturists and 5 medical doctors developed an acupuncture curriculum. The group provided a learning program based on the curriculum for 16 medical doctors in charge of outpatient Kampo services in a research institute. The learning program consisted of a lecture and practical training, and a total of 4 sessions were held. At the end of each session, a test was conducted to examine the participants' level of understanding. After the completion of the learning program, a questionnaire survey was conducted to confirm the usefulness of the acupuncture curriculum for the practice of Kampo medicine. The mean number of participants per session was 10.8 ± 1.3. The mean test score was 9.3 ± 0.5 (full score : 10). In the questionnaire, 14 out of the 16 (88%) answered that the acupuncture curriculum was useful or relatively useful for the practice of Kampo medicine. On comparing the numbers of new acupuncture patients with a history of outpatient Kampo service use before and after the acupuncture curriculum, there was a 1.8-fold increase after it. The results support the usefulness of the acupuncture curriculum to understand acupuncture and practice Kampo medicine. Further evaluation is necessary.
