A study was done to assess and compare the levels of infection control practices amongst Year 3, 4 and 5 undergraduate dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya, Malaysia. This study also compared the levels of infection control practices between the operators and the assistants performing a similar task. A checklist was designed based on the Infection Control Guidelines published by the Faculty of Dentistry. The audit checklist criteria were specific to the operators and assistants or common to both. 10 pairs of students (operators and assistants) were randomly selected from Polyclinics A, B and C, representing Year 3, 4 and 5 students respectively (n=60). The subjects were audited as soon as they entered the clinic, during treatment and up until they exited the polyclinic. The data collected were analysed using SPSS and Rasch model. Year 3 students performed better infection control practices (1.43 logit) followed by Year 5 (0.96 logit) and Year 4 (0.94 logit) students. The operators in Year 5 and the assistants in Year 3 and 4 were more compliant to infection control practices. 100% of students complied with removal of gown before leaving the clinic. However, only 1.7% of dental students wore protective goggles or face shield during treatment and disinfected prostheses before and after inserting into patient’s mouth. Introduction and reinforcement of infection control practices should be incorporated at the beginning of each academic year for all students to allow for better practice and delivery of treatment to patients.

BACKGROUND: The Dentist Licensure Examination (DLE) is one of the most difficult pre-professional practice examinations in the Philippines. The personality type of a dental student can be a determining factor or a testfor-fit of the chosen college program, the DLE, and the eventual profession.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to document the personality dichotomies and MBTI personality categories of the respondents.

METHODS: Through the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), this cross-sectional investigation examined the Filipino students' personality type in a dental school in the Philippines and presented it through descriptive statistics.

RESULTS: In retrospect to the personality dichotomies, majority or 44 (17.19%) of the students were of the Introverted feeling with intuition variety or the Introversion Intuition Feeling Perceiving (INFP) type. This personality type does not coincide with that of a dentist or dental student in other studies.

CONCLUSION: The mainstream dental students' personality types were inclined to traits that are indicative of the INFP professions (e.g. artists, counselors, social workers, etc.) and not of a prospective dentist. These findings will add to the database of dental education in the Philippines, and will enable the dental educators and schools to improve their educational strategies.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims to establish baseline data on the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of senior dental clinicians, which may help determine areas of ICDAS that could be reinforced in teaching, training, and open opportunities for future studies in the Philippines.

A quantitative descriptive study design used a 4-part online questionnaire for senior dental clinicians from A.Y. 2020-2021 with 1-2 semesters of clinical experience. The survey tool, via Google Forms, gathered general information about the participants and KAP on ICDAS.

Out of 29 participants, 19 (66%) had 1 semester, and 10 (34%) had 2 semesters of clinical experience. Overall mean score for knowledge was 76.1% and is considered “adequate”. Five participants (17%) failed to reach the cut-off score of 70%. Based on the overall mean score, the participants were found to have a “positive” attitude. Two (7%) were categorized as “very negative”. For the Practice component, all the clinicians showed “good practice.”

The senior dental clinicians have demonstrated adequate knowledge, positive attitude, and good practice on ICDAS. A small percentage of the participants scored lower in their K (17%) and A (7%) scores. Even with good results, there is still a need to reinforce some of the basic ICDAS principles and more clinical exposure to reinforce the clinicians’ skills in diagnosis and encouragement in using ICDAS.

Introduction: Smartphone addiction is becoming a global concern affecting every part of society, including healthcare professionals. This study aimed to identify the prevalence of risk of smartphone addiction and its associated factors among medical and dental students in a public university in Malaysia. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among pre-clinical medical and dental students using convenience sampling. Questions regarding sociodemographic profile and responses to the Smartphone Addiction Scale Short Version (SAS-SV) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Score questionnaire (DASS-21) were collected. Multiple logistic regression testing was used to analyse the factors associated with smartphone addiction. Results: We invited 409 pre-clinical medical and dental students to participate voluntarily, resulting in a response rate of 80.2%. The prevalence of high-risk smartphone addiction among the participants was 47.9%. Male participants, participants who used smartphones mainly for social media, and participants with depressive symptoms were more likely to have a high risk of smartphone addiction. Medical students, participants who spent less than 3 hours per day on a smartphone, and participants who used smartphones for education-related activities were less likely to have a high risk of smartphone addiction. Conclusion Smartphone addiction prevalence among pre-clinical medical and dental students was high. Therefore, the authorities should overcome this problem by implementing early measures.

The purpose of this study was to compare the shaping ability of three Ni-Ti file systems used by dental students or the experts and consequently to aid in choosing a proper systems for educational courses of dental students and beginners. Fifty students and ten dentists who have clinical experience over two years prepared 180 simulated root canals in resin blocks with three Ni-Ti systems; ProFile(R) (PF), HeroShaper(R) (HS), K3TM (K3). After preparation, the Ni-Ti files were evaluated for distortion and canal preparation time was recorded. The images of pre- and post-instrumented canals were scanned and superimposed. Amounts of increased canal widths, deviation, and centering ratio were calculated at apical 1, 3 and 5 mm levels and statistical analysis was performed. The results were as follows: 1. HS showed the shortest preparation time and instrumented canal width in K3 was significantly larger than other groups (P < 0.05). 2. At 1 and 3 mm levels, all groups had outward deviation. In student group, at the 1 mm level, PF had the least deviation (P < 0.05). 3. In the centering ratio, the PF had the best centering ability compared to the others at 5 mm level. At 1 and 3 mm levels, HS and PF had better abilities than K3. Student group had better ratio than the expert at 3 mm level with PF (P < 0.05). Based on the results, it is surmised that the ProFile(R) is the safest and most ideal instrument for students and beginners.

Background: Dental caries are the most common diseases in Vietnam and the World. There are some risk factors influencing diseases.Objectives: (1) describe dental caries prevalence in first and second molars, and (2) risk factors of the first molars. Subjects and method: The cross sectional study was applied with sample size of 377 students in Khuong Thuong primary school in 2005. Structured questionnaries were used to collect information on individual characteristics, eating habits and dental hygienic practices. Results: prevalence of the below first molars was highest (35,3%-36,5%). The prevalence of the above first molars was 8,4%. The logistic regression analysis show that students who had poor tooth brushed practice have higher dental caries prevalence significantly. Hygiennic dental education is important and needed to reduce dental caries.Conclusion:The prevalence of the first molars was higher than the prevalence of the second molars. The prevalence of the first below molars was higher than that in the first above molars. Wrong tooth brushing was a determinant of dental caries.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare two nickel-titanium systems (rotary vs. reciprocating) for their acceptance by undergraduate students who experienced nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments for the first time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-one sophomore dental students were first taught on manual root canal preparation with stainless-steel files. After that, they were instructed on the use of ProTaper Universal system (PTU, Dentsply Maillefer), then the WaveOne (WO, Dentsply Maillefer). They practiced with each system on 2 extracted molars, before using those files to shape the buccal or mesial canals of additional first molars. A questionnaire was completed after using each file system, seeking students' perception about 'Ease of use', 'Flexibility', 'Cutting-efficiency', 'Screwing-effect', 'Feeling-safety', and 'Instrumentation-time' of the NiTi files, relative to stainless-steel instrumentation, on a 5-point Likert-type scale. They were also requested to indicate their preference between the two systems. Data was compared between groups using t-test, and with Chi-square test for correlation of each perception value with the preferred choice (p = 0.05). RESULTS: Among the 81 students, 55 indicated their preferred file system as WO and 22 as PTU. All scores were greater than 4 (better) for both systems, compared with stainless-steel files, except for 'Screwing-effect' for PTU. The scores for WO in the categories of 'Flexibility', 'Screwing-effect', and 'Feeling-safety' were significantly higher scores than those of PTU. A significant association between the 'Screwing-effect' and students' preference for WO was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Novice operators preferred nickel-titanium instruments to stainless-steel, and majority of them opted for reciprocating file instead of continuous rotating system.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Interpoximal papilla could be re-established without immeidate support with a provisional resotration following an immdiate implant placement. PURPOSE: Successful esthetic outcomes were reported utilizing immediate provisionalization following immediate implant placements. The aim of this study was to evaluate the soft tissue esthetics around immediately placed single tooth implant restorations with or without immediate provisional restorations. METHODS: A total of ten patients, who had a hopeless maxillary anterior tooth, were enrolled in this study. Screw retained provisional restorations were delivered to the randomly chosen 5 patients (immediate provisionalization group) on the day of immediate implant placement and maintained for about 5 months. For the remaining five patients (non-immediate provisionalization group), healing abutments were delivered on the day of surgery, replaced with screw retained provisional restorations approximately 3 months afterwards, and the provisional restorations were maintained for about 3 months. Digital photographs were taken at the delivery of final restorations in order to assess following variables; mesial papilla, distal papilla, soft tissue level, soft tissue contour and facial soft tissue prominence. The variables were compared to those of the contralateral natural tooth and scored by prosthodontists, periodontists, orthodontists and dental students. RESULTS: The immediate provisionalization group marked significantly higher scores on the following variables; soft tissue level and facial soft tissue prominence. In evaluating each variable, there were no notable differences in opinion between four dentist groups. CONCLUSION: Immediate provisionalization can be a treatment option to achieve superior soft tissue esthetics around immediately placed single implant restorations rather than non-immediate provisionalization approaches.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different experience level and different light source on shade selection ability comparing prosthodontist group and dental student group under 4,000 K and 5,500 K light. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After color difference of Vitapan 3D-master shade guides was measured, 3 sets of 5 shade tabs were selected with similar value but have different chroma (set a, b, c). Also 3 sets of 5 shade tabs were selected with similar chroma but have different values (set d, e, f). Under 4,000 K and 5,500 K light sources, ten prosthodontists and ten dental students were allowed to match in one set of 5 tabs the same shade tab with the tab which was originally selected in the other set of 5 tabs. Color differences of original tab and matched tab were measured by spectrophotometer and the shade selection ability was evaluated with those data. Evaluation of color difference value was performed in regard to different light conditions and different level of experience, followed by t-test with 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: Color difference values under 4,000 K and 5,500 K light source were 1.62 +/- 2.0, and 1.33 +/- 1.7 respectively. In addition, color difference values of prosthodontist group and dental student group were 1.34 +/- 1.7, and 1.61 +/- 2.0 respectively. Difference of shade selection ability was not found under either different light sources (P=.398), or different experience level (P=.221). CONCLUSION: Level of experience did not affect on the shade selection ability when prosthodontists and dental students matched the shades with the same shade tab under the same light source.
