Introduction: Persons with disabilities (PWD) are susceptible to malnutrition. Caregivers or teachers in rehabilitation centres may not be adequately trained
in nutrition management of PWD. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the nutrition knowledge, attitude and practice among teachers in community-based
rehabilitation centres for PWD; and (ii) to evaluate changes in the nutrition knowledge and attitude of the teachers before and after exposure to a training
workshop on nutrition management for PWD. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using a guided self-administered Nutrition Knowledge, Attitude
and Practice Questionnaire on Persons with Disabilities (KAP-nOKU), among a convenience sample of 210 teachers. Forty-five of them further participated in a
nutrition training workshop and completed the post-test evaluation on knowledge and attitude of the same measures. Results: At baseline, the teachers’ average knowledge, attitude and practice scores were 13.80±3.73 for knowledge
(below 50th percentile); 51.49±4.08 for attitude (above 75th percentile); and 48.08±3.61 for practice (between 50th and 75th percentile). There was significant
positive correlations between knowledge and attitude (r=0.343, p<0.05), as well as between attitude and practice (r=0.147, p<0.05). After exposure to a 3-day
nutrition workshop, significant improvements in the teachers’ knowledge and attitude were observed, whereby teachers’ knowledge score increased from
14.20±3.80 to 25.38±2.36 and from 51.16±3.97 to 55.20±4.41 for attitude (p<0.001). Conclusion: Nutrition intervention was associated with improvement in short
term knowledge and attitude of the teachers. Sustainable interventional strategies are needed to enhance the nutrition knowledge and skills of teachers of PWD.

Intrduction: Obesity and chronic diseases have been increasing since the last few
decades alongside rapid economic development in developed and developing
countries. The alarming increase in the prevalence of childhood obesity had
been shown by many epidemiological studies worldwide. The aims of this study
were to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity among Chinese
school children in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and to map the association between
dietary practices and their nutritional status. Methods: A cross-sectional study
was conducted on 278 school children aged 10 to 12 years old (144 boys and 134
girls) studying in a Chinese primary school in Kota Bharu. Results: The survey
revealed that while only 1.4% (n=4) were overweight, 23.4% (n=65) of the children
were obese. A total of 67.7% (n=44) of the obese children were boys. The
overweight and obese children (n=70) were compared with a randomly selected
group of normal weight children (n=70). Dietary assessment showed that protein,
fat and total calorie intake were significantly higher among the overweight
group (p<0.05). A significantly higher proportion of the normal weight children
(85.7%) took breakfast daily or at least 4 days per week compared to the
overweight groups (59.4%) (p<0.05). Conclusion: The prevalence of obesity among
school children in the study is a matter of concern. These findings may be useful
in targeting programmes and strategies for prevention and intervention of
childhood obesity.

BACKGROUND: An aggressive skin cancer on the nose, tends to have poorly defined clinical margins, and has a higher recurrence rate. A small tumor on the nose is usually easily treated by any of the standard methods. However, removal and reconstruction with preserved cosmesis is more laborous in a basal cell carcinoma larger than 10 mm in diameter. This is because the nose has complex contoures, unique skin color and texture, and the limited availability of mobile adjacent skin. When available Mohs micrographic surgery is the preferred treatment for these large tumors. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to investigate the preferred reconstruction method(especially, local flap reconstruction) by the cosmetic unit of the nose after Mohs micrographic surgery. METHODS: From March 1991 to February 1997, twenty-one patients were diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma on the nose at our department. All the tumors were removed with Mohs micrographic surgery, and then the defects were reconstructed with a primary closure, skin graft, and local flap.

We retrospectively reviewed the clinical features, management and outcomes of patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the vulva at the Gynaecological Cancer Centre, KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore, between 1 January 2000 and 28 February 2014. Patients with vulvar BCC were identified from the cancer registry, and their medical records reviewed and analysed. A total of 11 patients with vulvar BCC were identified. Mean age at diagnosis was 63 (range 30-85) years. Ethnically, ten patients were Chinese and one was Malay. Average time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis was 13.8 (range 2-60) months. The most common presenting symptoms were lump and pruritus. All patients were managed surgically. Recurrence was noted in only one patient. Vulvar BCC, although rare, has an excellent prognosis when managed appropriately. Histological diagnosis of all persistent papules, plaques and pigmented lesions is important for early diagnosis.
