20?, ranging from 21? to 75?(average, 35?), and 59 cases 20?. Results Successful decompression in which the distance from the middle point of connecting line between bilateral transverse processes to the posterior wall of vertebral body was more than 8 mm, was achieved in 59 cases (85.5%); satisfied correction of kyphosis was noticed in 10 cases. Post-operatively the mean angle of kyphosis deformity was 10.8? ranging from 0? to 40?. During the mean follow-up period of 12.5 months, neurological functional recovery was noticed in 63.8% of total cases. For complete spinal cord injury, 17.6% of cases recovered partially(sensory function), whereas neurological function recovery was noted in 78.8% of cases with incomplete spinal cord injury, the statistical difference was significant between the incomplete and complete spinal cord injury cases. Conclusion The old thoracolumbar fracture with incomplete spinal cord injury could be treated with transpedicular anterior decompression and osteotomy, neurological functional recovery is expected.

AIM: To observe the changes of glutamate and calcium within the hippocampal microenvironment in mitochondrial stress.METHODS: A lateral hippocampus was microperfused with glutamate and calcium chloride solution by a kind of single-pumped push-pull perfusion system in Tree Shrews. At 24 h,the expression of cytochrome C(Cyt C)was observed by immunochemistry. Also, the hippocampus was removed, then mitochondria and cytoplasmic fragment were divided by low temperature centrifugation and the distribution of cytochrome C was assessed through Western blotting. The relative amounts of caspase-3 and caspase-9 mRNA were evaluated by real time fluorescence polymerase chain reaction. In the treated group, cyclosporin A(CsA,40 mg/kg) was intravascularly injected at 6 h after perfusion of glutamate-calcium chloride solutions into the hippocampus and inspected the above-mentioned items at 24 h.RESULTS: In the glutamate-calcium group, compared with the control group, cytochrome C immunoreactivity increased and the content of hippocampal mitochondrial cytochrome C decreased. Also, the cytochrome C was detected in cytosol.Cyclosporin A treatment at 6 h after microperfusion, the cytochrome C expression weakened and no Cyt C in cytosol fraction was observed.By real time PCR,in relation to the control group, the caspase-3 and caspase-9 mRNA was higher in the glutamate-calcium group.Cyclosporin A treatment cut down both caspase-3 and caspase-9 mRNA contents.CONCLUSION: The accumulation of glutamate and calcium may promote Cyt C release, caspase cascade activation and the mitochondrial stress. The neuroprotection of CsA may results from uniquely inhibiting the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, and preventing Cyt C release and caspase activation.

Objective To know the epidemiological characteristics of children dental fluorosis in endemic fluorosis areas in Tianjin. Methods Ten prevalent areas were selected and 55 villages were collected by cluster sampling in 2008. Such indicators of endemic fluorosis as the content of water fluoride in the investigated villages, the state of dental fluorosis among the children aged 8-12 years, the concentration of urine fluoride were investigated. Results The average rates of dental fluorosis were different among different areas(?2=773.571,P=0.000) ,positively correlated with the content of water fluoride(r=0.924,P=0.000) . In serious prevalent areas, the average rates of dental fluorosis were different among age groups(?2=16.351,P=0.003) . The geometric mean of urine fluoride was different among different areas(H=75.356,P=0.000) ,positively correlated with the content of water fluoride(r= 0.266,P =0.000) . In the same area,no significant difference was observed in the geometric mean of urine fluoride among age groups. Conclusion In Tianjin, endemic fluorosis is still very serious and the efficient control will be promoted.

Fraction F3-3-3 of glycosaminoglycan was isolated from the leftover bits of Bay scallop Argopecten irradiaus . Infrared spectra of F3-3-3 was similar to that of heparin. Agarose gel electrophoresis of this fraction was performed in the system of barbital buffer (0. 06 mol/L,pH 8. 6). It was found that F3-3-3 showed single band in the electrophoresis. Compared with the agarose gel electrophoresis of standard glycosaminoglycan, such as heparin, hyaluronic acid and chondroitin 6-sulfate, it indicated that the relative migration rate of the fraction was close to that of heparin.

Objective To analyze the cause for complications of the long bone fractures treated with the interlocking nail and indicate the prevention and treatment measures. Methods From January 1998 to May 2000,168 patients with long bone fractures were treated with the interlocking nail. Of them, there were 77 cases of femoral fractures, 67 tibial fractures and 24 humeral fractures. Results All patients were followed up for 5-24 months. Complications occurred in 14 cases (8.33%) including 4 cases of infections, 1 lower limb necrosis, 2 internal fixation failure due to incorrect indication, 2 re-fractures during the operation, 2 distal screw misinserted,1 nail into the ankle joint, 1 distal screw broken and 1 distal screw loosening. Conclusions We should attach great importance to the following points during treatment of long bone fractures with interlocking nail:(1) The indications must be correctly handled. (2) The technique for interlocking nail must be performed strictly during operation; close inserting nail is proposed.(3) As for the comminuted fractures, bone continuity should be reconstructed and the time to start weight bearing properly delayed. (4) C-Arm X-ray supervision is necessary during operation.

Chinese Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma 2002;0(04):-
Objective To explore a reasonable treatment for intertrochanteric hip fractures in the aged patients by comparing the fixation effects of cannulated compression screws and intramedullary fixation nails. Methods From January 1998 to December 2004, in our department 123 old patients with intertrochanteric hip fracture were fixed with cannulated compression screws or intramedullary nails. They were followed up and their complete clinic data kept. According to the Evans classification, of the 51 patients who received treatment with cannulated compression screws for their anterograde intertrochanteric hip fracture, 14 were type Ⅰ , 24 type Ⅱ , 10 type Ⅲ and three type Ⅳ , while of the 72 patients who received treatment with intramedullary nailing, 10 were type Ⅰ , 12 type Ⅱ , 28 type Ⅲ , 14 type Ⅵ , and eight retrograde intertrochanteric hip fractures. A retrospective comparison was made between the old patients treated with the two different fixation devices in terms of operative time, blood loss, transfusion, average hospitalization time, intraoperative and postoperative complications, functional recovery one year postoperatively and treatment expenses. Results The differences between the two groups in operative time, blood loss, transfusion, treatment expenses were of statistical significance (P0.05). Conclusions Cannulated compression screws should be chosen for old patients with anterograde intertrochanteric hip fractures of Evans types Ⅰ & Ⅱ or of Evans types Ⅲ & Ⅳ who are at a high risk, in a poor health or severely osteoporotic state. For patients with unstable Evans types Ⅲ & Ⅳ or with retrograde intertrochanteric hip fractures, intramedullary nails are suitable.
