BACKGROUND: Irradiation crosslinking can remarkably increase the abrasive performance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), thereby reducing its wear rate. OBJECTIVE: To review the recent progress in irradiated crosslinking UHMWPE. METHODS: A computer-based online search of ISI Web of knowledge was performed for articles related to irradiated crosslinking UHMWPE published from January1995 to April 2012 using the keywords of“irradiation crosslinking UHMWPE” in English. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: At present, domestic studies on irradiation crosslinking of UHMWPE mainly focus on the wear resistance, oxidation resistance and mechanical properties. Under high-energy radiation, radicals generate from the UHMWPE, which are inter-crosslinked. Irradiation crosslinking dramatical y enhances the UHMWPE wear resistance, while reduces its oxidation resistance and mechanical properties. In the future, the research wil focus on how to develop new UHMWPE composite with good wear resistance, oxidation resistance and mechanical properties.

Objective To compare the difference of spatial reference memory and dopamine (DA) level in the brain between acute, subacute and chronic mouse model of Parkinson' s disease(PD) induced by 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1 ,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP) injection. Methods The acute, subacute and chronic mouse model of Parkinson' s disease were induced by injecting the same MPTP volume dose with different schedules. The spatial reference memory of mice was tested by morris water maze. Dopamine concentration in striatum, hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex were detected with HPLC. The number of tyrosine hydroxylase(TH)-positive cells in the substantia nigra of mice was detected by immunohistochemistry. Results The mean escape latency of the chronic but not the acute or subacute mouse model of Parkinson' s disease was significant longer ( P < 0.05 ) than its control group. The striatum DA concentration of three test groups ( ( 1180. 1 ± 293.0 ) ng/ml, ( 1177.4 ± 450.5 ) ng/ml,( 1149.6 ± 353.0 ) ng/ml ) reduced significantly compared to their control groups ( ( 225.6 ± 79.7 ) ng/ml, ( 273.6± 64.9 ) ng/ml, ( 327. 1 ± 126.2 ) ng/ml, P < 0.01 ). The prefrontal cortex DA concentration of the acute mouse model of Parkinson' s disease ( ( 65.3 ± 23.9 ) ng/ml ) was significant lower than its control group ( ( 41.2 ±18.8 )ng/ml, P < 0.05 ). No significant changes of hippocampus DA concentration were seen between these test groups and their control groups. The number of TH positive cells in substantia nigra significantly decreased in three test groups compared to their control groups( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion The difference of spatial reference memory between three regimens of the mouse model of Parkinson' s disease may not due to the difference of DA level in their brain.

Objective To study the antiviral and antibacterial effects of the effective site of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM-ES).Methods Chicken embryoes were infected with influenza virus A(FM1 strain) and pre-injected with TCM-ES by means of chicken-embryo inoculation technique, and the antiviral effect of TCM-ES on chicken embryo was assayed by detecting the hemagglutination titers in allantoic fluids.Mice were orally pretreated with various dosages of drugs twice daily for 3 days, then were given drugs continuously for another 4 days following FM1 infection. The protective effects of TCM-ES on mice infected with FM1 were assayed by calculating the weight, index of lung,death-protection rate, and life-prolongation rate, etc.Ribavirin was used as the positive control. In addition, the antibacterial effects of TCM-ES were observed by detecting the minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration(MBC) by test-tube dilution method. Results In chicken embryo experiments,TCM-ES showed a potential inhibiting effect on influenza virus with the MIC of 10 mg/mL,which was weaker than ribavirin. The results of animal experiment showed that the body-weight(BW) and pulmonary index of infected model group decreased evidently compared with those of the normal group,TCM-ES groups at the dosages of 750 mg/kg and 1500 mg/kg could reverse the decrease of BW and lung index as compared with the infected models, the difference being insignificant as compared with the normal group.Moreover,TCM-ES also increased the death-protection rate and life-prolongation rate of mice in a dose-dependent manner.TCM-ES at dosage of 10 mg/mL(MIC and MBC) had an antibacterial effect on staphylococcus, while had no effect on gram-negative bacilli. Conclusion TCM-ES has obvious antivirus effect on influenza virus FM1 strain, and also has certain antibacterial effect on staphylococcus, which is worth of further development and research.
