A bacterium(designated as LW-3), capable of degrading Chlorimuron-ethyl, was isolated from the long-term contaminated soil by Chlorimuron-ethyl. Based on physiological and biochemical analyses and sequences comparison of 16S rDNA, strain LW-3 was identified as Pseudomonas sp. LW-3 could use Chlorimuron-ethyl as sole nitrogen source for growth. The optimum pH and temperature for degradation of Chlorimuron-ethyl were pH 6.5~7.2 and 30?C~35?C, at same temperature the pH change to the Chlorimuron -ethyl degrading influence is large. When the pH and temperature were pH 6.5 and 32?C, 50 mg/L Chlori- muron-ethyl could be degraded to 70%~80% level within 7 days.

PURPOSE: Tuberous sclerosis is an autosomal dominant multisystemic neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the development of multiple hamartoma distributed through the body, skin, brain, heart, kidney, and lung. The classic triad is seizure, mental retardation, and facial angiofibroma. We experienced a case of a tuberous sclerosis associated with the facial lesion and multiple masses on scalp, forehead, and right lower extremity. METHODS: This a 34-year-old male patient had subependymal giant cell astrocytoma in brain and multiple angiomyolipoma in both kidneys. Tangential excision with razor blade and dermabrasion were done on the centrofacial area. We excised other lesions and the mass on scalp was excised and covered with split thickness skin graft. RESULTS: The histopathological finding revealed that the facial lesion was angiofibroma and the others were multiple fibroma. CONCLUSION: In our case of tuberous sclerosis, we chose the tangential excision to remove the large nodules of angiofibroma, and then dermabrasion was used to smooth the final contour. The patient appeared to have a good results from this treatment modality. But, tuberous sclerosis is an disease that needs long term follow-up to check up the recurrence of skin problem.

Growth suitability as assessment indicators for medicinal plants cultivation was proposed based on chemical quality determination and ecological factors analysis by Maxent and ArcGIS model. Notopterygium incisum, an endangered Chinese medicinal plant, was analyzed as a case, its potential distribution areas at different suitability grade and regionalization map were formulated based on growth suitability theory. The results showed that the most suitable habitats is Sichuan province, and more than 60% of the most suitable areawas located in the western Sichuan such as Aba and Ganzi prefectures for N. incisum. The results indicated that habitat altitude, average air temperature in September, and vegetation types were the dominant factors contributing to the grade of plant growth, precipitation and slope were the major factors contributing to notopterol accumulation in its underground parts, while isoimperatorin in its underground parts was negatively corelated with precipitation and slope of its habitat. However, slope as a factor influencing chemical components seemed to be a pseudo corelationship. Therefore, there were distinguishing differences between growth suitability and quality suitability for medicinal plants, which was helpful to further research and practice of cultivation regionalization, wild resource monitoring and large-scale cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine plants.

Chinese Journal of Surgery 2008;46(13):988-991
OBJECTIVETo summarize the pathogenic characteristics of bacterial infection and analyze the risk factors after orthotopic liver transplantation (OLT) in patients over 60 years of age.
METHODSA retrospective study of 69 patients that were over 60 years of age and underwent OLT was carried out. Descriptive statistics and risk factor analysis were performed with SPSS 11.0.
RESULTSThirty-eight patients developed bacterial infection (55.1%) after OLT, and thirty recipients suffered from mixed bacterial infection (79.0%). Multi-location infection was most commonly seen (68.4%). Nine patients died of bacterial infection. The primary pathogenic germs included enterococcus, methicillin-resistant coagulase negative staphylococcus, c maltophilia. The risk factors related to bacterial infection included preoperative malnutrition, long anhepatic phase, use of ventilator and duration of ICU stay.
CONCLUSIONSThe old patients that have undergone OLT are susceptible to bacterial infection. Bacterial infections are associated with high rate of mortality and multidrug resistance. Eliminating various risk factors can reduce the incidence of bacterial infection.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes in serum neuron-specific enolase (NSE) and serum ferritin (SF) in patients with pneumoconiosis and their relationship with the onset of pneumoconiosis.
METHODSThe serum NSE and SF levels in the peripheral blood of patients with pneumoconiosis were measured by electrochemical fluorescence immunoassay.
RESULTSThe patients with first-stage pneumoconiosis and second-stage pneumoconiosis had significantly higher serum NSE and SF levels than the control group (23.0264±14.0410 and 44.9776±26.5208 ng/ml vs 8.1480±3.7512 ng/ml, P < 0.05; 267.2515±186.5809 and 579.1371±433.9326 ng/ml vs 120.8613±74.2809 ng/ml, P < 0.05), and the patients with second-stage pneumoconiosis had significantly higher serum NSE and SF levels than those with first-stage pneumoconiosis (P < 0.05). After treatment, the serum NSE level decreased significantly in the patients with pneumoconiosis (21.1675±17.5942 ng/ml vs 33.4490±21.6948 ng/ml, P < 0.05), but it was still significantly higher than that in the control group (P < 0.05). The treatment did not produce significant changes in SF level among these patients (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONPatients with pneumoconiosis have elevated serum NSE and SF levels, which may be related to the onset and progression of this disease.

Journal of Southern Medical University 2007;27(5):712-714
OBJECTIVETo study the effect of chemotherapy with drugs selected according to drug sensitivity test and drug- resistance gene assessment in mice bearing tumors derived from high-passage gastric cancer cells.
METHODSChemosensitivity of the mouse gastric cancer cells to 6 chemotherapeutic drugs was investigated using MTT assay before the 6 drugs were applied in mice with implanted tumors. The implanted tumor volume and tumor inhibition rate were observed, and the expression of the multidrug resistance-1 (MDR1) gene was detected.
RESULTS5-FU, the most sensitive among the 6 drugs, resulted in significantly higher tumor inhibition rates in comparison with the control group, but did not significant affect MDR1 expression. Adriamycin (ADM) had the lowest sensitivity with low tumor inhibition rates and no significant effect on MDR1 expression. Cisplatin (DDP) was identified as the most sensitive drug for mouse gastric cancer with previous 5-FU exposure, and Mitomycin (MMC) was the most insensitive drug for mouse gastric cancer with previous ADM treatment. In mice bearing tumors of the second-passage cells, DDP showed high tumor inhibition rate but scarcely affected MDR1 expression; MMC resulted in low tumor inhibition rate and high MDR1 expression. Application of 5-FU and ADM in these tumor-bearing mice of the second-passage cancer cells resulted in rather low tumor inhibition rates without significant alterations in MDR1 expression as compared with the control group.
CONCLUSIONAppropriate individualized chemotherapy should be implemented in full consideration of the results of drug sensitivity test and drug-resistance gene assessment.

Construction of multifunctional pesticides-degrading genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) is increasing important in the bioremediation of various pesticides contaminants in environment. However, construction of genetically stable GEMs without any exogenous antibiotic resistance is thought to be one of the bottlenecks in GEMs construction. In this article, homologous recombination vectors with the recipient's 16S rDNA as homologous recombination directing sequence (HRDS) and sacB gene as double crossover recombinants positive selective marker were firstly constructed. The methyl parathion hydroalse gene (mpd) was inserted into the 16S rDNA site of the carbofuran degrading strain Sphingomonas sp. CDS-1 by homologous recombination single crossover in the level of about 3.7 x 10-(7) - 6.8 x 10(-7). Multifunctional pesticides-degrading GEMs with one or two mpd genes inserted into the chromosome without any antibiotic marker were successfully constructed. The homologous recombination events were confirmed by PCR and southern blot methods. The obtained GEMs were genetically stable and could degrade methyl parathion and carbofuran simultaneously. The insertion of mpd gene into rrn site did not have any significant effect on recipient' s physiological and original degrading characteristics. The methyl parathion hydrolase (MPH) was expressed at a relatively high level in the recombinants and the recombinant MPH specific activity in cell lysate was higher than that of original bacterium (DLL-1) in every growth phase tested. The highest recombinant MPH specific activity was 6.22 mu/tg. In this article, we describe a first attempt to use rRNA-encoding regions of Sphingomonas strains as target site for expression of exogenous MPH, and constructed multifunctional pesticides degrading GEMs, which are genetically stable and promising for developing bioremediation strategies for the decontamination of pesticides polluted soils.

BACKGROUNDLittle is known about the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in Chinese patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictors of in-hospital all-cause mortality of severe CAD in Chinese patients who were hospitalized for AAAs.
METHODSFrom January 2003 to August 2009, 368 patients were operated on for AAAs. The clinical characteristics were retrospectively collected. The primary outcome was the in-hospital all-cause mortality. The clinical risk factors were subjected to a multivariate analysis to determine the predictors of in-hospital all-cause mortality.
RESULTSDuring their hospitalization, 23% (85/368) of the patients underwent coronary angiography, which revealed significant lesions in 93% (79/85) of the patients. In 25 cases, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was performed before the AAA repair and in 16 cases of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) was performed. Ten patients with AAA alone died before discharge, and eight patients diagnosed with AAA combined with CAD died. There was no statistical difference in the postoperative death between the two groups. The logistic analysis showed that age > 70 years and CAD (vessels ≥ 2) were the significant factors in predicting the adverse clinical outcome.
CONCLUSIONSThe prevalence of severe CAD in Chinese patients with AAAs seemed lower than those that were reported. Myocardial evaluation and subsequent revascularization before AAA surgery could improve the clinical outcome for these patients who have severe CAD.
