To study in a systematic and dynamic manner the level, traits, and development tracks of scientific and technological achievements in medicine and health and related disciplinary fields in the past two decades, the paper conducted a statistical analysis of the winners of prizes awarded by the Ministry of Health for progress in science and technology from 1981 to 1999. The results showed that the number of prize winners presented the tendency of fluctuating increase with 4 to 5 years as a cycle; the quality of prize winners presented a downward tendency; and endocrinology, preclinical medicine, oncology and preventive medicine ranked in the first four places with their prize winners accounting for over half of the total. The academies of medical sciences, Shanghai Medical University, Shanghai, Beijing Medical University, Beijing, and the academies of preventive medical sciences won the most prizes in almost all the fields involved while the academies of medical sciences took the first place in one third of the disciplinary fields. The project index of institutions was 1.91. The study indicates the following musts: enhancing the quality of the bidding projects, reinforcing the strength of research, and implementing policies that favor key and brainstorm projects and key disciplines; supporting weak disciplines, intensifying the development of disciplines with unique features, and stepping up scientific cooperation; strengthening scientific and technological input and the construction of echelons of scientific and technological personnel and maintaining the continuity of research contingents and capabilities of various disciplinary fields.

AIM:To clarify the relationship between serum copper/zinc ratio(CZR) and histopathological classification as well as prognosis of Hodgkin's disease (HD). METHODS:The serum copper level(SCL),serum zinc level(SZL)and CZR were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry(AAS)in 135 patients with HD and 100 healthy individuals.RESULTS:The results showed that SCL and CZR were higher and SZL was lower in patients with HD than in healthy individuals (P<0.01). SCL and CZR were significantly higher in the patients with lymphocyte depleted type(LD)than mixed cellulal type(MC), SCL and CZR were higher in MC type than nodular sclerosis type(NS)and lymphocyte predominance type (LP)(P<0.01). It was also found that with the development of the disease, the SCL and CZR elevated but SZL dropped. And with the alleviation of the disease, the SCL and CZR rose while SZL dropped. While the illness is relieved and the SCL and CZR markedly dropped and SCZ rose. SCL and CZR were strongly correlated with histopathologic type and clinical stage of tumor.CONCLUSION:SCL, SZL and CZR are parameters useful for clarifying histopathological classification, clinical stage and prognosis of HD.

Objective To explore the effect of aerobic exercises on synaptic plasticity and expression of PDE-4 in hippocampus during the aging process of rats. Methods Forty-five adult male SpragueDawley rats were randomly divided into a control group(group C),an D-galactose induced aging group (group A) and an D-galactose induced aging & aerobic exercise intervention group(group AE).All rats were induced aging for 6 weeks and group AE was given swimming exercise intervention of a moderate load simultaneously. Then Nissl's staining was conducted to observe the neurons in the dentate gyrus(DG).The immunofluorescence was employed to detect the number and density of synaptophysin (Syp) and metabotropi glutamate receptor 1(mGluR1).And the expression level of Phos-phodiesterase 4(PDE-4) mRNA and protein was observed using the,real-time PCR and Western blotting. Results Compared with group C,senile signs such as mental retardation, lethargy and tardy movement, significantly less neurons in the hippocampus, bigger cell spacing and shallower Nissl body in the cytoplasm were observed in group A.The integrated optical density(IOD) values of Syp and mGluR1 in group A decreased significantly compared to group C(P<0.01),while those of group AE were significantly higher than group A(P<0.01).The expression of PDE-4 mRNA and protein in Group A increased significantly compared with group C (P<0.01),but that of group AE was significantly lower than group A (P< 0.01).The expression of PDE-4 mRNA was negatively correlated to the IOD value of Syp and mGluR1 (P<0.01,P<0.05).Conclusions The aerobic exercises can improve the morphology of hippocampal neurons and keep the number and density of Syp and mGluR1 at a certain level to maintain the synaptic plasticity,so as to improve brain function and delay the aging process. Moreover, exercise may affect brain function through down-regulating the expression of the PDE-4 gene.
