West China Journal of Stomatology 2015;33(2):166-168
OBJECTIVETo study the anti-halitosis effect of sugar-free chewing gum through their influence on odor induced by cysteine.
METHODSTen volunteers were randomly divided into the treatment group and the untreated group; each group consisted of five volunteers. All volunteers consented to participate in a test in which breath odor was induced by cysteine. After the test, the treatment group chewed sugar-free chewing gum for 1 min, whereas the untreated group did not undergo any treatment. The effectiveness was determined by the percent reduction of H2S, CH3SH, and (CH3)2S response after the volunteers chewed gum for 1, 10, and 20 min.
RESULTSAt 1, 10, and 20 min, H2S of the treatment group was reduced by 82.68%, 92.27%, 97.47%, respectively, CH3SH was reduced by 65.49%, 73.79%, and 82.89%, respectively, and (CH3)2S was reduced by 60.45%, 73.82%, and 59.72%, respectively. The differences between the two groups at different times were significant (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONChewing gum can effectively inhibit cysteine-induced odor.

Chinese Journal of Radiation Oncology 1992;0(04):-
Objective To identify the radiation effect on different kinds of neurogliocytes in the hippocampus of rat brain and its dose, time relationship. Methods The brain sections were immunohistochemically stained separately with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), 2'3'-cyclic nucleotide 3'-phosphodiesterase (CNPase) and CD11b(OX-42), to label the astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and microglial cells respectively. The number of GFAP, CNPase, and OX-42 positive cells in hippocampus were recorded and the data were analyzed by the Student's t test. Results By comparison with the unirradiated hemibrain, the relative number of GFAP and OX-42 positive cells increased in the hippocampus and the CNPase positive cells decreased in the irradiat hemibrain. The degree of change was both dose and time related and it was most significant at three months after 30?Gy irradiation. Conclusions The quantitative variation of different neurogliocytes in the hippocampus suggests that in addition to the decreasing traditional oligodendrocyte lineage, other increasing phenotypes, such as the astrocytes and microglial cells, as well as cellular interactions may also be involved in the pathogenetic process of brain radiation injury in the early stage.

Objective Isosorbide-5-mononitrate(ISMN), a long-acting venous dilator, has been shown to decrease portal pressure and used in cirrhotic patients to prevent esophageal variceal bleeding(EVB). We performed a meta-analysis to evaluate ISMN in prevention of EVB. Methods Data from Medline(1968-2003), EMBASE(1986-2003), Cochrane Library(issue 3,2003),CJFD(1994-2003) were searched to retrieve randomized controlled trials comparing ISMN combined with or without other treatments to placebo or other treatments in prevention of EVB.Outcome measure was odds ratio( OR ) of bleeding rate. Mantel-Haeszel method was used in fixed model, while Der Simonian and Laird methods were used in random model. Results Seven trials were identified including prevention of first bleeding and rebleeding. The results of meta-analysis indicated that ISMN had no effect on prevention of EVB[study group vs control group: 88/463 vs 117/465, random model: OR (95% CI ): 0.63(0.37, 1.08 )]. Based on sensitivity analysis compared with control group, ISMN had no effect [43/314 vs 40/314, fixed model: OR :0.63(0.37, 1.08)]on prevention of first bleeding, but had therapeutic efficacy [45/149 vs 77/151, fixed model: OR :0.39 (0.24,0.65)]on prevention of rebleeding. Combination therapy of ISMN and ?-blocker revealed more effective than single therapy with ?-blocker[53/327 vs 74/329, fixed model: OR :0.64(0.42, 0.98)]in prevention of rebleeding [25/80 vs 41/81, fixed model: OR :0.44(0.23, 0.85 )], but had no significant difference in prevention of first bleeding[28/247 vs 33/248, fixed model: 0.84(0.48, 1.44)]. Conclusions ISMN is effective in prevention of esophageal variceal rebleeding. Furthermore , combination with ?-blockers has more therapeutic efficacy in prevention of esophageal variceal rebleeding.

Objective To explore the expression of survivin gene in gastric cancerous tissue and its relationship with gastric cancer prognosis. Methods All the samples were obtained from patients with gastric cancer who underwent surgery in Zhongshan Hospital from July 1995 to June 1996.“ Envision two steps”of immunochemistry was used to detect survivin expression in the resected gastric cancerous tissue.TNM stages were determined by pathological diagnosis and clinical status. All the cases were followed up at least 5 year or until death. The discrepancy of survivin expression was compared in different pathological types and TNM stages.Survivial curves were compared in the two groups with or without survivin expression. Results Totally 96 cases(male/female:59/37;age:29-84 years old, mean age 56) were recruited and survivin expression rate was 70.8%(68/96).Among pathological types,78 cases were adenocarcinoma,18 were non-adenocarcinoma.Survivin expression was similar in different pathological types (69.7% in adenocarcinoma vs.60.0% in non-adenocarcinoma,P=0.369).Among adenocarcinoma, survivin expression rate was higher in poorly differentiated group than that in well differentiated one(82.1% vs. 62.5%,P=0.053).As the infiltration denoted in adenocarcinoma, the expression rates of survivin were 33.3% in cases limited to mucosa and submucosa,81.3% in cases limited to muscularis layer and 75.9% in cases infiltrated to whole layers (P= 0.020).Expression rate of survivin was not related with lymph node metastasis(68.1% vs.70.8%,P= 0.771).Five-year survival rate in 68 survivin positive cases was 42.93%,lower than 52.93% of 28 survivin negative cases, but no statistical difference was observed. Conclusions Survivin is highly expressed in gastric cancer.Survivin expression is closely related with differentiation status of adenocarcinoma and degree of infiltration.Further studies are needed to evaluate its role in the prognosis of gastric cancer.

Objective:To evaluate the influence of Tweed-Merrifield technique in correction of severe bimaxillary protrusion adult patients on the measurement of the dental and skeletal changes after orthodon-tic treatment by Johnston analysis and the regular cephalomatric analysis. Methods:Twelve adolescent patients with severe bimaxillary protrusion were included in this self-control retrospective study.Lateral cephalometric radiographs were taken before and after treatments. All the radiographs were traced and analyzed by the method of Johnston analysis.Other measurements were evaluated using a series of 1 3 li-near and angular measurements including SNA,SNB,ANB,U1 -SN,U1 -NA,U1 /NA,L1 -NB, U1 /NB,L1 /MP,U1 -L1 ,(U1 +L1 )/2-AB,MP/SN and MP/FH from regular cephalomatric analysis. These measurements were also applied to compare the differences between pre-and post-treatments,which clarify the dental and skeletal changes by Johnston analysis. The effect of orthodontic correction was de-termined using the non-parameters test. Results:The maxillary moved backforward by 1 .3 mm according to the stable skull base, while the mandible moved forward by 2.1 2 mm.The relative position between the maxillary and mandible (ABCH)changed 3.42 mm.The upper and lower incisors retracted signifi-cantly.The upper and lower molars moved slightly forward and the relative positions of upper and lower molars and anterior teeth after treatment were 3.44 mm and 4.23 mm respectively. After treatment, the parameters of ANB、U1 -NA、U1 /NA、U1 -SN、L1 -NB、L1 /NB and L1 -M were reduced by -(1 .98 ± 1 .55)°(P =0.01 2),-(5.08 ±4.6)mm (P =0.002),-(1 1 .79 ±1 .21 )°(P =0.004),-(1 3.55 ±6.32)°(P =0.047), -(3.1 7 ±3.07)mm (P =0.01 0), -(6.84 ±2.55)°(P =0.038)and-(4.1 3 ±2.24)°(P =0.048)on average, whose changes had the statistically significant effects.Con-clusion:Tweed-Merrifield technique (directional force technique)can stabilize anchorage molar, retract anterior teeth and significantly improve the hard and soft tissue profile for patients with bimaxillary protru-sion,and make a good vertical control which means this technique is applicable to the patients who need strong anchorage.Even for the severe bimaxillary protrusion adult patients, the Tweed-Merrifield tech-nique can control the anchoragewell and make the profiles improved greatly.
