To explore the demarcation between the normal variation and the developemental anomaly of the cardiac conduction system (CCS). Using the method of sampling CCS designed by this research group, CCS of 737 cases died of non cardiac causes of death and 149 cases died of sudden cardiac deaths were sampled, serial sections were made, stained with HE method or Masson trichrome method, and observed under the light microscope.Results:(1)There were morphological variations in size, position and structure of normal human CCS; (2) In 4 cases died of sudden cardiac deaths, developemental anomalies were found in both AVN and HB. The morphological variations observed in our cases include: displacement of the bifurcation of HB into the pars membrancea of the interventricular septum,of the HB toward the left or the left lower sides of the interventricular septum or of less than 1/2 AVN into the central fibrous body , as well as of ordinary cardiomyfibers into the HB or BB. The developmental anomalies observed in our cases include: preservation of fetal type AVN in adults, displacement of whole AVN into the central fibrous body, complete division of HB into more than 3 bundles, and the displacement of the bifurcating portion of HB into the root of tricupid valves.

Objective To compare endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) with endovenous microwave coagulation (EMC) in the treatment of varicose vein in the lower extremities. Methods Sixty-five (male 30, female 35) patients with 70 lower extremities (35 legs in each treatment group) were pair matched according to age, gender and CEAP classification to receive endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) or endovenous microwave coagulation (EMC). The same surgeon performed all procedures. Patients were monitored on 72 hours, 4 weeks and 6 months after the procedure (by procedural site scored for bruising, skin burn, painful induration or trabes as well as a pain score), the cured extremities were examined via Duplex uhrasonography to evaluate the effects of the procedure. Results All these 65 patients (mean age, 47.52 years) completed treatment and were followed-up. The mean operation time of EMC group was less than that of EVLT (71±25 vs. 59±15, P=0.01). At 72 hour after the procedure, bruising scores and skin buring were significantly different (P<0.05): patients in the EMC group showed less bruising (17.14% vs. 54.29%) but more burn (48.57% vs. 20%) on the procedure site than the patients in the EVLT group. At 4 weeks and 6 months after the procedure, no significant differences were found between patient outcomes, physical conditions, and symptoms and or possible adverse events. In 20/28 patients the pigmentation faded away, Edema were relieved in all the 25 extremities. 4 patients with ankle ulcer were healed. No major complications were found. Conclusions Both EMC and EVLT were effective in treating lower extremities varicose veins, with no major complications.

BACKGROUND:The need for bone graft and its substitutes has dramatically increased during the past decade. Either bio-derived graft materials or synthetic materials cannot satisfy this need. Study of composite bone graft has become a focused field.OBJECTIVE: To develop a novel porous poly (lactic-acid) (PLA)/bone matrix gelatin (BMG) bioactive composite material by means of supercritical carbon dioxide fluid technique (SC-CO2) and evaluate the bone forming potential in vitro.DESIGN: A comparative study and observation.SETTING: Research Center of Tissue Engineering, Southern Medical University; Institute of Biomaterials and Pharmaceutical Technique, China Institute for Radiation Protection.MATERTALS: Mouse osteoblast-like MC3T3-E1 cells were obtained from RIKEN Cell Bank in Japan. PLA was supplied by the Institute of Bio-technique of Jinan University. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) kit was the product of Nanjing Jiancheng Bio-engineering Institute. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured in Dulbecco's modified eagle medium (DMEM) (Gibco Laboratories, USA) supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS, Si Ji Qing, China), 100 mg/L penicillin and 100 U/L streptomycin in a 37℃ humidified atmosphere. The cells were passaged with 0.25% trypsin (Gibco Laboratories, USA).METHODS: The experiment was carried out in the Research Center of Tissue Engineering, Southern Medical University from October 2005 to July 2006. The porous PLA/BMG composite biomaterials and PLA were prepared with SC-CO2 technique, and then macroscopic and microscopic observations were performed. The MC3T3-E1 cells were co-cultured with PLA and PLA/BMG in vitro, and DMEM was taken as the blank control group. Each well was pictured with digital camera. The percentage of the stained area, standing for the calcification deposition, was determined with an image processing and analysis software. The ALP activity and calcium content were determined with the method of ultrasonic cell lysis.MArN OUTCOME MEASURES: ① Macroscopic and microscopic observation of PLA/BMG; ③ Quantitative measurement of the calcification area; ② ALP activity and calcium content.RESULTS: ① Macroscopic and microscopic observation of PLA/BMG: The PLA/BMG showed good homological porosity with the size of 50-150 μm and connectivity: There were many holes with the size of 5-10 μm in the PLA/BMG walls. The PLA and BMG were mixed uniformly. ② Calcification areas: The percents of calcification area were significantly different among the PLA/BMG group, PLA group and blank control group [(42.98±4.44)%, (9.55±1.94)%, (0.86±0.41)%, P < 0.01]. ③ Results of calcium content and ALP activity: The ALP activities were significantly different among the PLA/BMG group, PLA group and blank control group [(5 427.58±1173.57), (1 060.54±500.27),(40.01±24.50) nkat/g, P < 0.05-0.01]; The calcium content in the PLA/BMG group was higher than those in the PLA group and blank control group [(3.51±1.64), (1.04±0.21), 0.70±0.24] mmol/g, P < 0.01].CONCLUSTON: The PLA/BMG prepared by means of SC-CO2 has a good osteoinductive activity and it is worth studying further as bone biomaterial and bone tissue engineered scaffold.

Objective To provide scientific evidence to identify and confirm severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) by laboratory detection. Methods Multiple clinical specimens were collected serially and systematically from the 4 suspected SARS patients, which occurred between Dec.2003 to Jan.2004 in Guangdong Province. The samples were tested by serologic and molecular methods. Results IgM or IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV were detectable after 6—8 days of the onset in four patients. The four-fold or greater rising in antibodies was clearly detected in three of the four patients, while the fourth patient’s seroconversion was from negative to positive. The results analysed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay( ELISA), immunoflourescence assay (IFA), and neutralization test were highly correlated. SARS-CoV RNA was just detected in 3 throat swab specimens from case 1 by real-time PCR. M, N and S genes were amplified by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from the positive samples. Sequencing results showed that they were SARS-CoV gene segments, and most closely matched SARS-CoV gene sequences were isolated from civet cats in Guangdong Province. Nevertheless, SARS-CoV was not isolated from any samples of the 4 patients. Conclusion Based on these results, the 4 reported cases were laboratorily confirmed as SARS cases.
