1.Development and Effects of a Sex Education Program with Blended Learning for University Students.

PURPOSE: This study was describes the development and implementation a sex education program with a blended learning method for university students. METHODS: Sixty-eight university students were recruited either to the experimental group (n=35) or the control group (n=33). This program was developed based on the analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation model. The analysis phase consisted of a literature review, focus group interview, expert consultations, and target group survey. In addition, learning objectives and structure were designed, and a printed text-book, presentation slides, cross-word puzzle, and debate topics were developed. In the implementation phase, the program was conducted 3 times over the course of 3 weeks. The evaluation phase involved verification of the effects of the program on sex-related knowledge, sexual autonomy, and justification of violence, as well as an assessment of satisfaction with the program. RESULTS: The experimental group had significantly higher scores on sex-related knowledge (t=5.47, p < .001), sexual autonomy (t=2.40, p=.019), and justification of violence (t=2.52, p=.015) than the control group. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that this sex education program with blended learning was effective in meeting the needs of university students and can be widely used in this context.

2.The Awareness of Contraception and Experience of Oral Contraceptives among North Korean Defector Women in Republic of Korea

OBJECTIVE: This study attempts to gauge the necessity of contraceptive education for women defecting from North Korea (NKDWs). METHODS: We conducted in-depth interviews with six NKDWs who had lived in the Republic of Korea (ROK) for more than three years, to understand the subjects' perceptions, experiences, and opinions regarding contraception. Thematic analyses were performed using qualitative data provided in the survey results. RESULTS: Before their defections from North Korea, none of the NKDWs had received any sex education. Loop is the only contraceptive method available to married women in ROK. After defection, NKDWs were provided information about contraceptive options available in China, but they could not fully understand this information. Furthermore, the information they received was not accurate. Thus, NKDWs had a high need for contraceptive sex education. As per our survey, their preferred education method was at least 3 lessons plus 1 : 1 counseling, as necessary. CONCLUSION: This study indicates that a necessity exists for development of a sex education program for NKDWs to enhance their contraceptive knowledge. Thus, government and health managers have a role to play in developing such a program.

3.Development and Effects of a Children's Sex Education Program for the Parents of Lower Elementary Grade Students.

PURPOSE: This study was done to develop a children's sex education program for the parents of lower elementary grade students and to evaluate its effects on sexual knowledge, gender role attitude, parent efficacy for child's sex education, and marital consistency. METHODS: A quasi-experimental with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. The participants were 29 couples (58 parents, experimental group=28, control group=30) from G city. The 5-week (5-session) program was developed based on ‘A theory of protection: parents as sex educators’ and used the case-based small group learning method. Data were collected during July and August 2015. The characteristics of the program developed in the present study were a theoretical-based, client-centered, multi-method. RESULTS: After the intervention, the experimental group showed a significant improvement in sexual knowledge, gender role attitudes, parent efficacy for child's sex education, and marital consistency, compared to the control group. The effect sizes of the program were .64 (knowledge), .65 (gender role attitudes), and .68 (parent efficacy). CONCLUSION: The results of this study provided implications for the parents as effective sex educator and the role expansion of school health nurses.

4.Sex education to grade seven students in Papua New Guinea, yes or no?

PIP: This paper discusses the provision of sex education to grade 7 students in Papua New Guinea. Since officials in both the government and the Church are still hesitant on the question of including sex education in the curriculum, the author cites the reasons why there is a need to provide factual information about sexuality, STDs, and AIDS to everyone. Among the reminders given to decision-makers are the following: 1) nobody has ever become pregnant or become infected with an STD due to knowledge; 2) preventing people from gaining knowledge is a violation of their basic human rights; 3) there is no evidence to show that sexual knowledge itself leads to sexual experimentation, but there is much evidence that ignorance in this area leads to problems (e.g., abuse by peers, vulnerability to STDs, and pregnancy); 4) young people need to grow up and gain self-confidence; 5) true religion does not withhold knowledge. In the last part of this paper, some methods and practical advice on providing sex education are discussed.

5.Experience of taking Oral Contraceptives in Adult Women.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore essences and meanings of using oral contraceptives among adult women. METHODS: The interview was conducted with 20 adult women who lived in Seoul, Gyeongi Province, Jeolla Province, Chungcheong Province, and Gangwon Province. Participants with the experience of using oral contraceptives for contraception were selected by convenience sampling. Semi-structured interviews were conducted for data collection. The data were analyzed using Colaizzi's method. RESULTS: Five themes revealed: ‘Lack of information and knowledge regarding oral contraceptives’, ‘Inconvenient and difficult purchase process of oral contraceptives’, ‘Pressure and fear regarding other people's reaction’, ‘Self-centered thinking toward the use of oral contraceptives’, ‘A need for a change in public awareness and policy’. CONCLUSION: A change in society's perception about oral contraceptives is required for safe contraceptives use. Therefore, it is necessary to educate the correct usage of oral contraceptives, and to develop a program for changing the paradigm of sex education.

6.Helping Teachers Conduct Sex Education in Secondary Schools in Thailand: Overcoming Culturally Sensitive Barriers to Sex Education.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this quasi experimental study was to evaluate the effects of Culturally Sensitive Sex Education Skill Development, a teacher-led sex education program in secondary schools in Thailand. METHODS: Two public secondary schools in the suburban areas of Bangkok were randomly selected. One was designated as the experimental school and the other as the comparison school. Ninety grade seven and eight teachers, 45 from each school, were selected to participate in the study. Self efficacy theory and culturally appropriate basis were applied to develop the program which included 4 weeks of intervention and 2 weeks of follow up. Primary outcomes were attitudes toward sex education, perceived self efficacy, and sex education skills. Statistical analysis included independent and paired t test, and repeated one-way analysis of variance. RESULTS: At the end of the intervention and during the follow-up period, the intervention group had significantly higher mean scores of attitudes toward sex education, perceived self efficacy, and sex education skills than their scores before (p < .001), and than those of the comparison group (p < .001). CONCLUSION: The results showed that Culturally Sensitive Sex Education Skill Development could enhance attitudes and sex education self efficacy to promote the implementation of sex education among teachers.

We reviewed the current human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevention education programmes in Singapore, discussed the challenges faced and proposed prevention education interventions for the future. Education programmes on HIV prevention have shown some success as seen by reduced visits to sex workers among the general adult population and a marked increase in condom use among brothel-based sex workers. However, we still face many challenges such as low awareness of HIV preventive strategies and high prevalence of HIV stigma in the general population. Voluntary HIV testing and condom use remain low among the priority groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual men who buy sex. Casual sex has increased markedly from 1.1% in 1989 to 17.4% in 2007 among heterosexuals in Singapore, with the majority (84%) practising unprotected sex. Sex workers have moved from brothels to entertainment venues where sex work is mostly hidden with lack of access to sexually transmitted infections (STIs)/ HIV prevention education and treatment programmes. Education programmes promoting early voluntary testing is hampered because of poor access, high cost and stigma towards people living with HIV. It remains a challenge to promote abstinence and consistent condom use in casual and steady sexual relationships among heterosexuals and MSM. New ways to promote condom use by using a positive appeal about its pleasure enhancing effects rather than the traditional disease-oriented approach should be explored. Education programmes promoting early voluntary testing and acceptance of HIV-infected persons should be scaled up and integrated into the general preventive health services.

8.Concept Analysis of Female Sexual Subjectivity based on Walker and Avant's Method.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to clarify attributes, antecedents, and consequences of female sexual subjectivity. METHODS: Walker and Avant's concept analysis process was used to analyze 27 studies from the current literature that relates to female sexual subjectivity. A systematic literature review of women's study in sociology, psychology, theology, law, health science, and nursing was reviewed. RESULTS: The defining attributes of female sexual subjectivity were sexual self-awareness, sexual decision making, sexual desire, and good sexual communication with partner. The antecedents of female sexual subjectivity were social environment, sexual education, sexual experience, and interpersonal relationship. The consequences of female sexual subjectivity were safe sex, prevention of sexual victimization, and sexual satisfaction. CONCLUSION: Female sexual subjectivity is defined as sexual self-awareness, sexual decision making, sexual desire to seek sexual pleasure and safety, and effective communication with partner in terms of sexual behavior, sexual experience and sexual health. Based on these results, a scale measuring female sexual subjectivity is needed.

9.Usefulness of ubiquitous-based testing for evaluations in medical education.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the suitability (convenience, objectiveness, and satisfaction) of ubiquitous-based testing (UBT) as a medical education evaluation tool. METHODS: UBT was administered using a smart pad in our medical school in May 2012. A questionnaire was given twice. The pre-UBT questionnaire examined possession of a tablet computer, skillfulness of smart devices, the convenience of UBT, and the usefulness of a medical educational assessment tool. The post-UBT questionnaire evaluated the satisfaction, convenience, and preference of UBT and the usefulness of a medical educational assessment tool, as in the pre-UBT test. The survey was measured on a 4-point scale: 1 is "strongly disagree" and 4 is "strongly agree." RESULTS: One hundred three students (male, 55.3%) participated in the UBT. The mean age was 29.2+/-2.4 years. In the pre-UBT questionnaire analysis, students responded affirmatively to the items about the skillfulness of smart devices, clinical skill assessment, and achievement of educational objectives. The responses to the items on the convenience and satisfaction with the UBT were positive in the post-UBT. The factors that affected the post-UBT questionnaire were as follows: knowledge assessment (p=0.041) and achievement of educational objectives (p=0.015) were significant, based on gender, and satisfaction with the UBT (p=0.002) was significant, based on possession of a tablet computer. The relationship between the ranks of this UBT and the average ranks of the three previous semesters was statistically significant (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: Convenience, objectiveness, knowledge assessment, and composition and completion were useful items in the UBT.

10.A Survey of Emergency Department Health Care Provider on Awareness of Elder Abuse.

PURPOSE: The population of senior citizens is rapidly growing in Korea, and this would inevitably result in the increase of elder abuse. This study was designed to survey healthcare providers in the emergency department, who may have a high probability of coming into contact with abused senior citizens, on the awareness of elder abuse, and to evaluate the level of legal knowledge and standard of education amongst these care providers. METHODS: This study was a descriptive, cross-sectional survey research and was made for doctors and nurses with at least a one-year experience working in an emergency department at a university hospital in Seoul. A total of 142 participants were included for analysis. RESULTS: Approximately 69.7% (n=99) of participants were relatively well aware of the obligation to report an elder abuse case. However, only 17.6% (n=25) of participants were aware of the method to file a report. Moreover, only 8.0% (n=11) of participants knew the provisions on punishing for not reporting. Only 15% (n=22) of participants received proper education relating to elder abuse after getting hired. Participants who received the education after getting hired have a better knowledge about elder abuse than those who did not receive the education (p=0.001). Participants who watch press reports about elder abuse showed to have better legal knowledge than those who do not watch such reports (p=0.012). CONCLUSION: With regard to participants' level of awareness of the severity according to the type of abuse, physical abuse was seen as the most serious (4.22), followed by neglect (3.52), abandonment (3.18), emotional abuse (2.66), sexual abuse (2.61), and financial abuse (2.27).
