1.Zero point survey: a multidisciplinary idea to STEP UP resuscitation effectiveness.

The primary survey assessment is a cornerstone of resuscitation processes. The name itself implies that it is the first step in resuscitation. In this article, we argue that in an organized resuscitation the primary survey must be preceded by a series of steps to optimize safety and performance and set the stage for the execution of expert team behavior. Even in the most time critical situations, an effective team will optimize the environment, perform self-assessments of personal readiness and participate in a preemptive team brief. We call these processes the ‘zero point survey’ as it precedes the primary survey. This paper explains the rationale for the zero point survey and describes a structured approach designed to be suitable for all resuscitation situations.

2.Self-assessment video: An effective supplementary learning tool in the development of cardiovascular examination skills of medical students.

Background: Self-evaluation can augment the facilitation of acquiring knowledge, skills and attitude through a reflective method. Self-assessment video (SAV) can be a very useful reflective method tool that is student-centered and self-directed.
Objective: This study aimed to identify if SAV is an effective supplementary learning tool in improving cardiovascular examination knowledge, skills and attitude of second year medical students.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental two-group design with pre- and post-test was used. The study population by convenience sampling involved second year medical students of the University of Santo Tomas Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. A structured direct observation checklist on cardiovascular precordial examination was used, done on two occasions in a week interval period. The said examinations were recorded in a video and evaluated and scored by two independent facilitators on these two occasions. The experimental group had the opportunity to review their videos immediately after the two examinations and accomplished self-assessment form. One-Way Repeated Measures Multivariate Analysis of Variance (One-Way RM-MANOVA), a parametric multivariate test for between- and within group comparison of multiple dependent variables was used.
Results: It showed that there was a significant improvement in all parameters measured after the intervention (SAV in the experimental group compared to the control group).
Conclusion: The study showed that SAV is an effective supplementary learning tool in cardiovascular examination attitude, knowledge, and skills, and can be a very useful teaching and learning self-evaluation tool.

3.Novel Photopneumatic Therapy for the Treatment of Rosacea.

BACKGROUND: Rosacea is a common skin condition, but the currently available treatments are not satisfactory. OBJECTIVE: We wanted to assess the efficacy and safety of photopneumatic therapy (PPx), which delivers pneumatic energy and broadband light (400~1,200 nm), for the treatment of erythematotelangiectatic rosacea. METHODS: Twenty two patients with erythematotelangiectatic rosacea were treated 3~5 times with PPx. Three independent dermatologists evaluated the efficacy of PPx by comparing the photographs taken before and after treatment. Patient self-assessment was also done by interviews. RESULTS: The photographic assessment by the dermatologists of the improvement showed that >50% improvement occurred in 64% (14/22) of the patients. The specific categories of improvement were as follows: poor (<25% improvement), 1 patient; fair (25~50% improvement), 7 patients; good (50~75% improvement), 11 patients; and excellent (>75% improvement), 3 patients. Based on the patients' self-assessment, 20 patients (91%) acknowledged an improvement. CONCLUSION: PPx is an effective and safe treatment option for erythematotelangiectatic rosacea.

4.A clinical study of calciportriol ointment(MC 903) in the treatment of psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: We have already shown that a new vitamin D3 analogue, calcipotriol is a potent growth inhibitor for human keratinocytes, indicating the close relationship between the in vitro inhibitory effect of calciipotriol and its therapeutic effectiveness or psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to evaluste the clinical efficscy, safety and tolerability of calcipotriol (50ug/g) ointment twice daily in the treatment of psoriasis. MEHTODS: We treated 31 patients with calcipotriol for 6 weeks. Patients were provided with a maximum of 100g of ointment per week. Efficacy, as measured by the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index(PASI), and safety were assessed at 2,4, and 6 weeks. RESULTS: Reduction of PASI was stastistically significant at all time points for treatments (p<0.01). At the completian of 6 weeks of treatment, the mean PASI reduction was 3.61. An analysis of patient overall self-assessment, at 6 weeks showed clearance or marked improvement in 61%. Some patients developed minimal irriltation of lesional or perilesional skin(6.5%). Laboratory tests did not show any significant changes, in particular there was no change in serum calcium levels. CONCLUSIONS: Calcipotriol ointment was effective as measured by the PASI and the self-assessment in patients with psoriaeis. This treatrnent was well tolerated.

5.Dose the Self-Assessment(in training examination) for the Residents of Anesthesiology have any Significance?.

The Korean Society of Anesthesiologists began to take in training examination(Self Assessment) for the residents in April 1989. Two hundreds thirty four participants took the first examination and after that 343 in 1990, 399 in 1991, 455 in 1992 took the examination obviously the actual number is increasing each year. This study was done to see if there is any correlationship between the results of self assessment and board examination in the same population group. Ninety two persons who took self assessment in April 1990 and board examination in Jan 1991 and 108 persons who took self assessment in Sept. 1991 and board examination in Jan 1992 were investigated. In both groups we can see the close positive correlationships between the results of self assessment and written board examination.

6.Impacts of the Journal Evaluation Program of the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) on the Quality of the Member Journals.

BACKGROUND: In 1997 the Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors (KAMJE) instituted a program to evaluate member journals. Journals that passed the initial evaluation were indexed in the KoreaMed. Here, we report changes in measures of quality of the KAMJE member journals during the last 20 years. METHODS: Quality measures used in the study comprised 3 assessment categories; self-assessment by journal editors, assessment of the journals by KAMJE reviewers, and by Korean health science librarians. Each used detailed criteria to score the journals on a scale of 0 to 5 or 6 in multiple dimensions. We compared scores at baseline evaluation and those after 7 years for 129 journals and compared improvements in journals indexed vs. not-indexed by the Web of Science (Science Citation Index Expanded; SCIE). RESULTS: Among 251 KAMJE member journals at the end of 2015, 227 passed evaluation criteria and 129 (56%) had both baseline and 7-year follow-up assessment data. The journals showed improvement overall (increase in median [interquartile range; IQR] score from baseline, 0.47 [0.64]; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.44–0.61; P < 0.001) and within each category (median [IQR] increase by editor's assessment, 0.17 [0.83]; 95% CI, 0.04–0.26; P = 0.007; by reviewer's, 0.45 [1.00]; 95% CI, 0.29–0.57; P < 0.001; by librarian's, 1.75 [1.08]; 95% CI, 1.77–2.18, P < 0.001). Before the foundation of KAMJE in 1996, there were only 5 Korean medical journals indexed in the MEDLINE and none in SCIE, but 24 journals in the MEDLINE and 34 journals in SCIE were indexed by 2016. CONCLUSION: The KAMJE journal evaluation program successfully contributes improving the quality of the member journals.

7.Self-assessed active listening skills and attitude among resident physicians in a tertiary hospital in Iloilo City

Background:
The skill of active listening is important in the diagnosis and management of patients by physicians.
Objective:
The aim of the study was to determine the self-assessed active listening skills and attitude among resident physicians in a tertiary hospital in Iloilo City.
Methods:
This is a cross sectional study which recruited all sixty-two resident physicians of the different residency training programs of Iloilo Mission Hospital. The participants answered a self-administered questionnaire in January 2020. Data entry and data analysis were done using Microsoft Excel and SPSS. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the level of active listening skills and attitude of the respondents. ANOVA, T-test, and Pearson chi square at alpha level 0.05 were used to determine the association between the variables.
Results:
Majority (87%) of resident physicians had medium level of active listening skills and attitude based on their Active Listening Attitude Scale (ALAS) score. The remaining 13% had high ALAS score. There was no socio-economic variable that was found to be associated with ALAS score.
Conclusions
The resident physicians of Iloilo Mission Hospital have a medium to high level of active listening skills and attitude. The respondents believe that having good active listening skills will help them deal with their patients and honing such skills should be encouraged during residency training.

8.Clinical Value of a New Self Assessment Method of Pain.

To evaluate the clinical value of a new self assessment method of pain, so called pain rating score(PRS), we performed the visual analogue scale, verbal rating scale, McGill pain questionnaire, and PRS on 60 patients with complained neuro-musculo-skeletal pain. The results showed that the reliability of PRS was very high. The PRS was a simple, easy, and comprehensive method to assess the pain for its intensity, frequency, duration, and aggravating factors. The PRS was very sensitive for the change of pain. Based on the above results we have concluded that, the new self assessment method of pain, pain rating score(PRS), is a valuable and useful clinical method which is simple, easy to perform and comprehensive.

9.International Collaborative Faculty Development Program on Simulation-Based Healthcare Education: A Report on Its Successes and Challenges.

PURPOSE: Countries that are less experienced with simulation-based healthcare education (SBHE) often import Western programs to initiate their efforts to deliver effective simulation training. Acknowledging cultural differences, we sought to determine whether faculty development program on SBHE in the United States could be transported successfully to train faculty members in Korea. METHODS: An international, collaborative, multi-professional program from a pre-existing Western model was adapted. The process focused on prioritization of curricular elements based on local needs, translation of course materials, and delivery of the program in small group facilitation exercises. Three types of evaluation data were collected: participants' simulation experience; participants' ratings of the course; and participant's self-assessment of the impact of the course on their knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSA) toward simulation teaching. RESULTS: Thirty faculty teachers participated in the course. Eighty percent of the participants answered that they spent less than 25% of their time as simulation instructors. Time spent on planning, scenario development, delivering training, research, and administrative work ranged from 10% to 30%. Twenty-eight of 30 participants agreed or strongly agreed that the course was excellent and relevant to their needs. The participants' assessment of the impact of the course on their KSA toward simulation teaching improved significantly. CONCLUSION: Although there were many challenges to overcome, a systematic approach in the adaptation of a Western simulation faculty development course model was successfully implemented in Korea, and the program improves self-confidence and learning in participants.

10.Flipped-learning course design and evaluation through student self-assessment in a predental science class.

PURPOSE: This study explores how to design a flipped classroom for a predental science course and evaluate its course through student self-assessment in order to provide practical implications for flipped learning in an undergraduate level. METHODS: Second- and third-year predental students in the Seoul National University School of Dentistry enrolled in Biodiversity and Global Environment, a 15-week, three-credit course based on a flipped learning model. At the end of the course, the students were asked to rate their self-directed learning, attitude toward social media, discussion skills, learning readiness, and class satisfaction. Out of the 82 predental students, 61 (74.3%) answered the survey. Pearson correlation and multivariate regression analyses were employed to examine the relationship between the self-rated measurements and the performance scores. RESULTS: The majority of the students felt somewhat more prepared than the medium level before the class (mean score of 3.17 out of 5.00), whereas they expressed relatively low preference concerning social media use and attitude (mean score of 2.49). Thus, it was found that learning readiness was significantly associated with both discussion skills and class satisfaction. In particular, multivariate regression analysis confirmed that learning readiness had a significant influence on learning outcomes. CONCLUSION: This study offered insights into how to design a flipped learning course in terms of predental students' preference and their learning readiness. Although learning success in a flipped classroom depends on the students' self-perceived level of preparedness, much still remains to be achieved in order to apply social media benefits in a flipped learning context.
