1.COMPARISON OF MUSCULAR ACTIVITY OF THE LOWER LIMB WHILE RUNNING ON INCLINED SURFACES

The purpose of this study was to compare muscle activity of the lower limb during treadmill running under five different gradient conditions (level, left and right inclines, downward and upward). All inclines were of 14% grade and tilted toward the left, the right, downward and upward directions of the runner. Twelve young healthy males ran at 2.8 m/s. Electromyographic activities of the following seven muscles-gluteus maximus, biceps femoris, rectus femoris, vastus lateralis, tibialis anterior, medial gastrocnemius, and solues-were measured using bipolar surface electrodes during treadmill running under five different conditions. Results showed that left and right inclined surfaces had only little influence on muscular activity. However, for all of the muscles measured, the activity of the lower-positioned leg was greater than that of the higher-positioned leg. During the upward incline trial, all the muscles showed greater activity than for the other trials. The downward slope tended to give the anterior muscles greater activity, and the posterior muscles less activity, compared to level running.
2.Patch Graft Aortoplasty for Repair of Chronic Aortic Dissection

A 72-year-old woman was admitted as an emergency case to our hospital because of chest oppression. She had a history of admission due to the same symptoms about 9 months previously. Her chest computed tomography showed a dissection of the ascending aorta (DeBakey type II). We suspected an acute aortic dissection and an emergency operation with CPB was performed. The ascending aorta was markedly enlarged, but the dissected adventitia did not appear weakened. Moreover, there was no bloody pericardial effusion which is specific to acute aortic dissection. When the pseudo-lumen was exposed, a firm intimal flap and single entry hole were recognized. The chronic phase of aortic dissection was finally diagnosed. Then the dissected adventitia and intimal flap were removed and a patch graft aortoplasty with a tailored 26mm gelatin-impregnated knitted Dacron vascular graft was employed because the residual aortic wall was normal in size and consisting. Her postoperative course was uneventful and there was no evidence of recurrence of aortic dissection or enlargement 2 years after the operation. We conclude that patch aortoplasty for repair of chronic aortic dissection can be effective when the range of dissection is restricted and to residual aortic wall is normal.
3.Prevalence of heterophyid infection among Japanese residents of Egypt (2005-2008) and its association with length of stay

A total of 300 stool samples collected from 213 Japanese residents of Egypt were examined microscopically. Among these samples, 39 were judged positive for heterophyid eggs. Sixty seven residents were examined repeatedly. The prevalence of heterophyid eggs revealed by the first examination samples was 8.5% (18⁄213) whereas that revealed by the second follow-up was 24% (16⁄67). The interval between the first and second examination was one year in 58 cases and 2 years in 9 cases.
The association of infection with the length of stay in Egypt was evident. Positivity among new residents (period of stay in Egypt ‹ 1 year) was as low as 3% (2⁄60). Positive conversion from new residents was observed in 28% (7⁄25), indicating a positive association between heterophyid infection and the length of stay in Egypt among Japanese residents of that country.
4.Survey of Content of Nitrate in Well Water of Rural Areas

We investigated the content of NO3-N in the well water of the eastern, middle and nothern districts of Nagano Prefecture. The NO3-N content seasonally changes and takes on the pattern of a high in summer and a low in winter.
Rain is considered to dilute the contaminated well water, but it lets NO3-N flow from the soil into the.well water, when the rain is poured by a typhoon. As a result, a high content of NO3-N is measured in the well water.
The water sample of 25 out of 85 wells in Matsukawa Town exceeded the tolerance level of NO3-N (10 ppm, but 44.3 ppm in terms of NO3-).
By crop area, the amount of NO3-N was highest in the fruitgrowing area, which was followed in order of the vegetable-growing area, the flower-growing and the rice planting area.
We consider that the contamination of well water is caused both by chemical fertilizers and the less absorbility of the soil.
5.Fluoride Levels in Principal Foodstuffs (Dried Corn, Capsicum) in a Fluoride-Contaminated Area in the Province of Sichuan, China, and Their Chemical Properties

The incidence of fluorosis, believed to arise from the burning of coal, has been frequently reported in the highlands in the southern part of China. With a lot of rain and a climate of low temperature, the hilly region produces coal and inhabitants use it as a fuel for cooking and heating. The fossil fuel used by them is mostly powdery. It is mixed with dirt and rolled up into bolls. In that way,the people make the briquettes that burn a long time.Ordinary houses have no chimneys to belch forth smoke, so that it stagnates indoors for a while. Soot and smoke, before flowing out via the openings in the roof shingle of the loft, spoils farm produce stored there. Because the smoke contains high concentrations of fluoride derived from coal and dirt, it is believed that eating farm produce exposed to the smoke is one of the major factors for fluoride poisoning. Many researchers have thus far analyzed farm products for fluoride content and confirmed that high levels of fluoride were contained in their samples.In the present study, we measured fluoride concentrations in some samples of corn and capsicum produced in a rural area of Sichuan, China on one hand and on the other examined the water-solubility of fluoride. Furthermore, screening tests for chronic endemic dental fluorosis were performed on students to survey the fluoride contamination in the past as compared with the present state.Incidentally, indoor air-borne fluoride concentrations in this area averaged out at0.047mg F/m3 (15 times as high as the mean in a community that was free of fluoride contamination). The fluoride content of the drinking water from a spring in the nearby hill, measured with use of a fluoride-specific electrode method,was within the range from 0.2 to 0.3μg/ml.

6.A Study on Organochlorine Residues in Human Bodies

Two hundred and thirty adipose tissues were collected from inpatients, who had undergone an operation and an autopsy in the Saku Central Hospital from 1980 to 1982. Organochlorine pesticides were extracted from the adipose tissues and determined by gas-liquid chromatography with an electron-capture detector.
The mean value was 1, 429 ppm for total BHC among males, and 1.665 ppm among females, 4.893 ppm and 3.791 ppm for total DDT, 1.082 ppm and 0.782 ppm for PCB, respectively. Regression analysis between the total BHC residue and the ages of patients indicated a positive correlation for both sexs. As for the relation between the rate of obesity and the residues, low rates of obesity (-10%--19%) were most significantly correlated with high values of total BHC, total DDT and PCB.
We also discussed relations between cancerous diseases and the residues.
7.Chronic Intoxication Experimentally Induced by Small Doses of Sumithion-an Organophosphorous Insecticide

Over the past eight years, small doses of an organophosphorous insecticide known in Japan as Sumithion (fenitrothion) have been administered weekly to rehsus monkeys and beagles. In this report, the results obtained during the past three years are discussed.
During the period, two monkeys and one hound died. Pathohistological examination revealed degeneration and disappearance-regeneration of liver tissues, edema of oculomotor muscle stomas, spinal cords and oculomotorius nerve fibers, and atrophy of limph nodes. These are considered the effects of the insecticide.
The surviving animals did not develop any abnormal changes or signs associated with Sumithion-induced disorders. Weight loss was not observed. Routine blood tests were negative. However, serum chemical analyses conducted in the seventh year showed that there are statistically significant differences in GPT, LDH and cholinestrase activity among the animals.
8.Research on Fluoride Pollution and Fluorosis in Rural Areas of China.

A China-Japan joint project was carried out to study the incidence of fluorosis caused by coal burning in China from 1995 to 1997.
The health survey covered a control area and two flourosis areas. In those research areas, drinking water was not polluted with fluorides. The survey was designed to analyze the health status of people exposed to fluorides and evaluate the relationships between the dose and incidence of fluorosis. The concentration of airborne pollutants in both indoor and outdoor air was measured. The concentration of fluoride in the urine was analyzed and definite diagnoses for dental fluorosis and skeletal fluorosis were determined.
As a result, the incidence of coal burning fluorosis was confirmed in studied areas. Moreover, the fluorosis was caused not only by the direct inhalation of the airbone fluorides in indoor air but also by the intake of cereals polluted with fluorides. Fluoride was contained in both coal and soil. Therefore the mixture of coal and soil used for the adjustment of fire energy contributed to the air pollution to a great extent. The typical polluted crops were red pepper, corn and potato. An extremely high concentration of fluoride in the urine of residents in the polluted areas was detected.
