Chinese Journal of Behavioral Medicine and Brain Science 2009;18(8):704-706
Objective To discuss alexithymia in patients with maintenance hemodialysis and its impact on medical coping style and the ability of daily living. Methods The patients with end-stage renal disease treated by the maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) were divided into 2 groups, namely, alexithymia group (total score>60) and non-alexithymia group (total score <50) ,according to the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20). The Medical response to the questionnaire (MCMQ) and the activities of daily living scale (ADL) were used to evaluate the patients. Results The TAS-20 score was (72.31±12.28) in 67 cases of patients with MHD. Among these, 31 cases for TAS-20 total score>60 points ,with an average score (82.37±15.84) and 26 cases for TAS-20 total score <50 points, with an average score (50.17±10.24). There was significant difference (t=8.90, P<0.01). The face factor score of MCMQ was significantly lower in alexithymia groups than that in non-alexithymia group, while the avoidance and subordination factor score was significantly higher than that in non-alexithymia group(P<0.01 or 0.05). The ADL scores and factor scores of the alexithymia group were significantly higher than that of non-alexithymia group, and there was a significant difference (t=3.53, P<0.01). Correlation analysis showed that TAS-20 score and the face factor score of MCMQ was significantly negatively correlated with MCMQ e-vasive and subordination factor, and factor scores and ADL score was significantly positively correlated (P<0.01 or 0.05). Conclusion MHD patients in the alexithymia group tend to use and yield response to avoid negative cop-ing style and less use of active coping style. The quality of life and activities of daily living of MHD patients in alex-ithymia group are worse than that of the non-alexithymia group.

Molecularly imprinted polymers for dimethoate recognition were synthesized by the precipitation polymerization technique using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as the functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker. The morphology, adsorption and recognition properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), static adsorption test, and competitive adsorption test. To obtain the best selectivity and binding performance, the synthesis and adsorption conditions of MIPs were optimized through single factor experiments. Under the optimized conditions, the resultant polymers exhibited uniform size, satisfactory binding capacity and significant selectivity. Furthermore, the imprinted polymers were successfully applied as a specific solid-phase extractants combined with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for determination of dimethoate residues in the cucumber samples. The average recoveries of three spiked samples ranged from 78.5% to 87.9% with the relative standard deviations (RSDs) less than 4.4% and the limit of detection (LOD) obtained for dimethoate as low as 2.3μg/mL.

Objective To investigate the relationships between expressions of HPV and EBV in larynge-al carcinoma. Methods DNA flow-through hybridization and gene chip genotyping technology(HybriMax)and real-time quantitative PCR were used for 37 subtypes of HPV detection and quantitative detection of EBV in 101 cases of laryngeal cancer paraffin embedded tissue specimens. 43 cases of vocal cord polyp of paraffin embedded tissue specimens were used as the controls. Results The positive rate of laryngeal carcinoma was 13.86% in group HPV and 9.3% in the control group ,with no statistically significant difference between the positive expres-sions of HPV in the laryngeal carcinoma group and control group(P>0.05). The positive rate of laryngeal carci-noma was 63.37% and 13.95%,respectively ,in group EBV ,and the control group ,with significant difference between them(P < 0.05). In respect of the positive rate by comparing differently differentiated EBV in laryngeal carcinoma ,there was no significant difference in the positive expression of EBV in well differentiated and differen-tiated laryngeal carcinoma(P>0.05),but the difference was statistically significant in highly differentiated EBV as compared with those with low differentiation type, medium differentiation and poor differentiation(P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the groups in view of sex ,age and course of disease in the patients (P > 0.05). Conclusions The incidence of laryngeal carcinoma is closely related with EBV infection ,possibly relationed with HPV and high-risk subtypes of HPV have a certain role in the process of induced laryngeal carcino-ma. The gender ,age and duration of disease have no significant correlation with EBV infection. This study will provide a basis for further invesgitation of pathogenesis of laryngeal cancer and prevention and treatment of larynge-al cancer.

Objective To purify native F1 antigen from E pestis EV76 strain and determine its ef-ficacy against Y. pestis. Methods A new purification method was developed by the substitution of physical disruption ( glass beads) for organic solvent ( acetone and toluene) one, followed by a combination of ammo-nium sulfate fractionation and SephacrylS-200HR column filtration chromatography. Groups of mice were im-munized with F1 antigen adsorbed to 25% aluminum hydroxide in PBS by intramuscular route. The immu-nized animals were challenged subeutaneously(s, c. ) with 104 CFU of Y. pestis strain 141 at 18 weeks after the primary immunization. Results There was no IgG titre difference between two groups of mice with one-dose immunization, whereas in the two-dose immunization groups, the group F1-40 μg induced a statistically higher antibody titre than the group F1-20 μg. Complete protection was observed for animals immunized with purified F1 antigen by s.c. route. In contrast, the control mice immunized with aluminum hydroxide suc-cumbed to a same dose of Y. pestis 141 challenge. Conclusion This purification strategy is a simple and ef-fective, and can be operated in a large scale. Native F1 antigen extracted from Y. pestis EV76 is highly im-munagenic, and can be used as a key antigen component to develop sub-unit vaccine of plague.

Experimental & Molecular Medicine 2017;49(4):e318-
Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a deadly malignancy with regard to mortality and prognosis, and the 5-year survival rate for all patients diagnosed with ESCC remains poor. A better understanding of the biological mechanisms of ESCC tumorigenesis and progression is of great importance to improve treatment of this disease. In this study, we demonstrated that the glutathione metabolism pathway is highly enriched in ESCC cells compared with normal esophageal epithelial cells in an in vivo mouse model. In addition, treatment with L-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO) to deplete glutathione decreased the ESCC tumor burden in mice, thus demonstrating the critical role of glutathione metabolism in ESCC progression. BSO treatment also led to decreased cell proliferation and activation of cell apoptosis in ESCC. Finally, BSO treatment blocked NF-κB pathway activation in ESCC. Our study reveals a new pathway that regulates ESCC progression and suggests that inhibition of glutathione metabolism may be a potential strategy for ESCC treatment.
