Objective　To monitor KBD prevalence rate in Changdu of Tibet.Methods　The aged 7～12 year children are tested with X- ray and epidemiological investigation.Results　Xizang are still high yet,the 3 of 4 porints X-rates are more than 20% and the highest one is 55.34%.Conclusions　The Changdu is the severest point of KBD in our country.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the marginal integrity of restoration in two types of mate- rials, or resin- modified glass ionomer cement and polyacid- modified composite resin (compomer). MethodsRestorations of four kinds of material (GC Fuji Ⅱ LC, VitremerTM, Dyract compomer and F2000 compomer) were placed in the facial Class V cavity preparations in forty noncarious human molar teeth. The teeth were randomly assigned to 4 experimental groups of 10 teeth each. After thermal cy- cling( × 20,5 ～55℃ ), the teeth were immersed in 1％ basic fuchsin dye for 24 hours at room tempera- ture. Staining along the teeth restoration interface was recorded. ResultsThe data indicated signifi- cant differences between all the restorative materials for both occlusal and gingival scores ( P=0.026, P = 0. 000)respectively. Further analysis revealed there were statistically significant differences between GC Fuji Ⅱ LC and others on occlusal margins versus Dyract compomer and others on gingival margins. Conclusion Factors such as dental conditioning, rates of water absorption and thermal coefficient were related to microleakage. Resin - modified glass ionomer cement showed less microleakage than polyacid- modified composite resin tested.

Objective To understand the adsorption capability and kinetics of chitosan (CTS) for Pb(II) in water. Methods The spectrophotometry was used to explore the effects of time, temperature, pH value and ion intensity on the adsorption capability of CTS for lead. Results The adsorption speed was faster at the beginning, then to the balance status 80 minutes later. The adsorption rate increased as the temperature increased. pH value could influence the adsorption, the adsorption capacity reached to the maximum when the pH values were 3.6-4.6. The sodium chloride solution showed an inhibitory effect on the adsorption with a dose dependent manner. Conclusion The adsorption is influenced by the effects of time, temperature, pH value, and ion intensity. The apparent energy(?E) is 5.11 kJ/mol.

Objective To investigate the effect of smoking on large arterial stiffness in patients with essential hypertensive.Methods The aortic,carotid and brachial arterial dimension,intimal-medial thickness were determined by vascular ultrasound technique.Wall cross sectional area and indices of compliance and distensibility were calculated in essential hypertensive patients with smoking(n=75) or without smoking(n=70).Results Hypertensive patients with smoking have increased wall intimal-medial thickness and wall cross sectional area in aortic,carotid and brachial arteries associated with decreased compliance and distensibility.After adjusting for the confounding effects of other variables including Age,BMI,HR,BP,PP,FPG,LDL-C and TG,covariance analysis show smoking remained as predisposed factors for vascular remodeling.Conclusion Smoking aggravates large arterial stiffness in essential hypertensive patients.

BACKGROUND: To discuss the basic theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) related to stem cell for a try to offer a new combining site +for the modernization research of the basic theory of TCM.METHODS: Comparatively analyzing the characteristic of stem cells and the essence theory in TCM.RESULTS: Stem cells have the capacity for both self-renewal and differentiation and can produce the daughter cells with the same phenotype and genotype as themselves. Stem cells have the plasticity that a stem cell may differentiate into cells other than the lineages to which it is committed, and therefore, is also termed transdifferentiation. So it is of great value for stem cell application in tissue engineering, curing tissue-damaged diseases and as the vector for transgene therapy. We compared the character of stem cells with essence theory, an elementary and important part of the basic theory of TCM, and found that stem cells are related greatly to essence,according to its two origin, congenital essence and acquired essence, and four kinds of functions of essence, which are controlling reproduction,controlling growth and development, manufacturing marrow and transforming blood; nourishing and moistening the zangfu-organs. Furthermore, stem cells especially have direct connected with the congenital essence which is stored in the kidneys. Congenital essence is the reproductive essence accepted from parents. Sperm and ovum merge to be oosperm, that is just the totipotent stem cell. The connotative meanings of congenital essence include all germ plasm and the special developing message of a genus in the oosperm. Genital stem cells are in charge of the function of controlling reproduction of congenital essence. Growth and development function is related to the proliferation and differentiation of adult stem cells controlled by gene. Manufacturing marrow function has relation with bone marrow stem cells and neural stem cells (NSC) in medullary cavity in which contains bone marrow, spinal cord and brain. Dominating bones function of the kidneys is related to mesenchymal stem cells (MSC), and hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) execute the function of producing blood completely.CONCLUSION: We consider that stem cells have a close relation with the congenital essence, and we put forward a new viewpoint in this research that stem cells have the same properties of congenital essence, and they are existence formation of congenital essence in cell level.

BACKGROUND: Erigeron, the inhibitor of protein kinase C, functions to decrease the death of neurocytes caused by cerebral ischemia reperfusion.OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of erigeron on hippocampus adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) of gerbils with cerebral ischemia reperfusion injury.DESIGN: A random controlled experiment.SETTING: Anesthesia Department of the Fourth Hospital of Suzhou University, Anesthesia Department of the Fourth People's Hospital of Wuxi City, and Anesthesia Department of the Affiliated Hospital of Xuzhou Medical College.MATERIALS: The experiment was done in the key laboratory of anesthesiology of Jiangsu Province from March 2002 to May 2003. The 90 Mongolian gerbils were divided into 9 groups: sham operated group, cerebral ischemia group, cerebral ischemia reperfusion 1 hour group, cerebral ischemia reperfusion 12 hours group, cerebral ischemia reperfusion 24 hours group, erigeron + cerebral ischemia group, erigeron + cerebral ischemia reperfusion 1 hour group, erigeron + cerebral ischemia reperfusion 12 hours group, and erigeron + cerebral ischemia reperfusion 24 hours group,with 10 gerbils in each. The erigeron injection with flavone 4.5 g/mL was made by the Biomedicine Factory of Yunnan Province and numbered 990103.METHODS: Apart from the sham operated group, all groups were established the ischemia reperfusion models. The erigeron groups were abdominally injected erigeron 10 mL/kg 30 minutes before the ischemia. Meanwhile, the other groups were injected the normal saline 10 mL/kg. The 6 gerbils of each group were taken blood for testing ATP content and ATPase activity and the rest 4 were only examined the pathological changes of neurocytes of hippocampus CA1 region. During the ischemia, the temperature of drum membrane (reflecting the brain temperature) was monitored and kept at (37±0.2)℃ in order to avoid the influence of temperature on the result. The comparison among groups was shown with the single factor analysis of variance.CA1 region.of ATP content and ATPase activity: Compared with the cerebral ischemia reperfusion 24 hours group, the ATP content of the erigeron 1, 12, 24 hours groups was obviously increased [(0.25 ±0.08), (0.81 ±0.12), (0.58 ±0.07),(0.43±0.09) mmol/kg, P ＜ 0.01], the Na+-K+-ATPase activity was obviously P ＜ 0.01], and the Ca2+-ATPase activity was also obviously promoted days after ischemia, the findings under the low power lens were: the pyramidal belt of the cerebral ischemia reperfusion groups became thinner and loose and even disappeared, but that of the erigeron groups became obviously wider and thicker; the findings under the high power lens were: most of the pyramidal cells of the cerebral ischemia reperfusion groups were in the state of coagulation necrosis, and those survived pyramidal cells with complete nuclear membrane and clear nucleole were very few, but the survived pyramidal cells of the erigeron groups were obviously more than those of the cerebral ischemia reperfusion groups.CONCLUSION: Erigeron increases obviously the ATP content after ischemia reperfusion, especially at the early stage of reperfusion, and at the same time, the ATPase activity is also in an improved tendency, relieving the ischemia reperfusion injury and protecting the neurocytes.

BACKGROUND: A good many researches believe that the gene polymorphism of vascular endothelia nitric oxide synthase(eNOS) correlate with diseases of heart, brain and kidney. However, it is still not clear whether eNOS Glu298Asp correlates with myocardial infarction in the elderly Chinese.OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of Glu298Asp polymorphism of vascular eNOS in the elderly as well as correlation between Glu298Asp polymorphism of eNOS and myocardial infarction in the elderly Chinese.DESIGN: A case-controled study based on diagnosis.SETTING, PARTICIPANTS and METHODS: A total of 37 patients with myocardial infarction were selected into case group, which all of them were patients from either outpatient department or inpatient department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. Thereinto, 20 cases without hypertensive history were allocated into case subgroup. Totally 172 subjects selected from the re-testees of physical checkup of our hospital were assigned into control group, of which 92 cases without hypertensive history were allocated into control subgroup. Indices like height, body mass and fasting blood sugar were detected respectively in all participants of all groups. The polymorphism of Glu298Asp of eNOS gene was assayed by polymerase chain reaction(PCR), and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RELP).MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The polymorphism of Glu298Asp of eNOS gene as well as the allelic frequency of 298Asp in the elderly of four groups.RESULTS: Genotype of Glu/Asp of the case group was higher than that of the control group(32.43% and 18.02% respectively) . The genotype composition of Glu298Asp polymorphism had significant difference between the case group and the control group(x2 = 3.87, P < 0. 05) . Between normotensive subgroups, Genotype Glu/Asp of the case subgroup was higher than that of the control subgroup(35.00% and 10. 87% respectively) . The genotype composition of Glu298Asp polymorphism of the eNOS gene also had significant difference between the case subgroup and the control subgroup (x2 = 7.43, P < 0.01) . The allelic frequency of 298Asp of the case group was higher than that of the control group without statistical significance (16. 22% and 9.01% respectively, P > 0. 05) . Between normotensive subgroups, the allelic frequency of 298Asp of the case subgroup was significantly higher than that of the control subgroup(17.50% and 5.43% respectively, x2 = 6.82, P < 0.01 ) ).CONCLUSION: Glu298.Asp polymorphism of the eNOS gene exists in the elderly Chinese. The genotype of Glu/Asp and allelic frequency of 298Asp might be a genetic susceptible marker of myocardial infarction in the elderly Chinese.

Objective Postictal language testing can provide useful diagnostic information for seizure lateralization.However no such a study based on non-English language was done previously.We investigated the latency of language recovery in Chinese patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE).Methods Complex partial seizures in patients with TLE were extracted from our video-electroencephalogram (EEG) database.For all patients,consciousness testing started as soon as seizures were detected.When they were alert and cooperative,they were asked to read out a sentence “昨晚他们听到老在电台里讲话”which was printed on a card.When the patients were able to read the sentence correctly,the language function was considered recovered.Results Totally 65 complex partial seizures from 22 cases of TLE (11 left and 11 right) were included.Patients were cooperative to language testing in 54 seizures (83％).The latency for consciousness recovery (CRL) and latency for consciousness language recovery (LRL) were not associated with seizure duration,but the seizure lateralization.The CRL (median,161 s) and LRL (281 s) in the left TLE were statistically significantly longer than that in the right TLE (30 s,54 s respectively).Using 150 s recovery time as bound language recovery ratio was 87％ (27/31) in right TLE and 13％ (3/23) in left TLE.Conclusion Postictal language testing based on ideographic Chinese words helps to establish seizure lateralization in patients with TLE.
