BACKGROUND:Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is an important cytokine signaling pathway, which plays an important role in inflammatory diseases. However, it is unclear whether gene polymorphism of STAT3 is associated with rheumatoid arthritis in the Chinese Han population. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association of gene polymorphism of STAT3 with rheumatoid arthritis in the Chinese Han population. METHODS:Four tag-single-nucleotide polymorphisms (tag-SNPs) in STAT3 were selected from the Chinese Han population of HapMap database. The study was performed with 228 rheumatoid arthritis cases and 228 normal controls. Four tag-SNPs (rs12601982, rs2293152, rs8078731 and rs9912773) were examined by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight mass spectrometry. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:The frequency of GG genotype at rs9912773 was 18.9% and 10.5% respectively in rheumatoid arthritis and control groups, and there was a significant difference between the two groups (P < 0.05). These results indicate the possible association between the STAT3 gene polymorphism at rs9912773 and the susceptibility of rheumatoid arthritis in the Chinese Han population.

Objective To explore the association between resilience and cognitive impairment in the elderly. Methods A face-to-face questionnaire survey was conducted among 6 524 elderly people aged 60 and over in Anhui Province by cluster sampling. The survey included general demographic characteristics, resilience and cognitive function. Statistical methods such as t-test,chi-square test, binary Logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results The incidence of cognitive impairment in the elderly was 13. 6% (886/6 524). The score of resilience in the elderly with normal cognitive function was (64. 89±11. 96), while it was (56. 10±11. 12) in the elderly with impaired cognitive function and the difference was statisti-cally significant (t=20. 511,P<0. 001). Logistic regression analysis showed that there was a statistical cor-relation between resilience and cognitive impairment in the elderly ( OR=0. 936,95%CI:0. 930~0. 943). After adjusting for depression, gender, age and other related factors, there was still a statistical correlation be-tween resilience and cognitive impairment in the elderly (OR=0. 963,95%CI:0. 955~0. 971). Conclusions Resilience is related to cognitive impairment in the elderly, and higher resilience is the protective factor for cognitive impairment.

Folic acid belongs to the group of water-soluble B vitamins and naturally exists in multiple forms in a wide variety of foods such as legumes, vegetables, liver, and milk (Iyer and Tomar, 2009; Lyon et al., 2020). It is involved in many biochemical reactions critical for cell division, such as purine and pyrimidine biosynthesis, DNA/RNA biosynthesis, and amino acid metabolism (Iyer and Tomar, 2009). Mammals cannot synthesize folic acid and thus they must acquire it from food. Although folic acid is ubiquitous in foods, folic acid deficiency still often occurs due to various causes such as unhealthy diet (Hildebrand et al., 2021; Iimura et al., 2022), disease-related malabsorption (Arcot and Shrestha, 2005), medication-related depletion (Arcot and Shrestha, 2005), or vitamin B12 deficiency (Fishman et al., 2000). Folic acid deficiency has been associated with several health problems, such as anemia (Carmel, 2005; Bailey and Caudill, 2012), cancer (Duthie, 1999), cardiovascular diseases (Wald et al., 2002), neural tube defects in newborns (van der Put et al., 2001), neuropsychiatric dysfunction (Shea et al., 2002), depression (Falade et al., 2021), inflammatory diseases (Suzuki and Kunisawa, 2015; Jones et al., 2019), and eye diseases (Sijilmassi, 2019). To prevent folic acid deficiency, its daily intake (400 μg/d) has been recommended for adults in the European Union, and its increased intake (600 μg/d) is advised for women before and during pregnancy (FAO/WHO, 2002; IOM, 2004). The New Zealand government mandated the fortification of non-organic wheat flour with folic acid in July 2021, and the UK government mandated the fortification of non-wholemeal wheat flour with folic acid in September 2021 (Haggarty, 2021).

Objective To evaluate the association between pressure-controlled ventilation-volume guaranteed (PCV-VG) mode and volume-controlled ventilation (VCV) mode on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients undergoing thoracoscopic lung resection. Methods A retrospective cohort analysis of 329 patients undergoing elective thoracoscopic lung resection in West China Hospital of Sichuan University between September 2020 and March 2021 was conducted, including 213 females and 116 males, aged 53.6±11.3 years. American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade wasⅠ-Ⅲ. The patients who received lung-protective ventilation strategy during anesthesia were divided into a PCV-VG group (n=165) and a VCV group (n=164) according to intraoperative ventilation mode. Primary outcome was the incidence of PPCs during hospitalization. Results A total of 73 (22.2%) patients developed PPCs during hospitalization. The PPCs incidence of PCV-VG and VCV was 21.8% and 22.6%, respectively (RR=0.985, 95%CI 0.569-1.611, P=0.871). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that there was no statistical difference in the incidence of PPCs between PCV-VG and VCV mode during hospitalization (OR=0.846, 95%CI 0.487-1.470, P=0.553). Conclusion Among patients undergoing thoracoscopic lung resection, intraoperative ventilation mode (PCV-VG or VCV) is not associated with the risk of PPCs during hospitalization.

Objective To evaluate the effect of intraoperative fluid infusion volume on postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in patients after minimally invasive endoscopic esophageal carcinoma resection. Methods From June 2019 to August 2021, 486 patients undergoing elective minimally invasive endoscopic esophagectomy for esophageal cancer were retrospectively screened from the electronic medical record information management system and anesthesia surgery clinical information system of West China Hospital of Sichuan University. There were 381 males and 105 females, with a median age of 64.0 years. Taking the incidence of pulmonary complications within 7 days after operation as the primary outcome, the correlation between intraoperative fluid infusion volume and the occurrence of PPCs within 7 days was clearly analyzed by regression analysis. Results The incidence of pulmonary complications within 7 days after surgery was 33.5% (163/486). Regression analysis showed that intraoperative fluid infusion volume was correlated with the occurrence of PPCs [adjusted OR=1.089, 95%CI (1.012, 1.172), P=0.023], especially pulmonary infection [adjusted OR=1.093, 95%CI (1.014, 1.178), P=0.020], and pleural effusion [adjusted OR=1.147, 95%CI (1.007, 1.306), P=0.039]. Pulmonary infection was significantly less in the low intraoperative fluid infusion group [<6.49 mL/(kg·h), n=115] compared with the high intraoperative fluid infusion group [≥6.49 mL/(kg·h), n=371] (18.3% vs. 34.5%, P=0.023). Intraoperative fluid infusion volume was positively associated with death within 30 days after surgery [adjusted OR=1.442, 95%CI (1.056, 1.968), P=0.021]. Conclusion Among patients undergoing elective minimally invasive endoscopic esophageal cancer resection, intraoperative fluid infusion volume is related with the occurrence of PPCs within 7 days after the surgery, especially pulmonary infection and pleural effusion, and may affect death within 30 days after the surgery.
