Journal of Acupuncture and Tuina Science 2007;5(1):10-13
Objective: To observe the effects of electro-acupuncture on S-100 protein expression of nerve fibers on the regeneration process of transected sciatic nerve of rats, so as to explore the partial mechanism of electro-acupuncture treatment for peripheral nerve injury. Methods: Following rat's sciatic nerve transection, the nerve regeneration chamber model was established, then the rat was given electro-acupuncture stimulation at the frequency of 5 Hz and frequency of 100 Hz, and the immunohistochemical staining method and image analyzing semi-quantitative technique were adopted to determine the percentage of S-100 protein area, hence to observethe effect of electro-acupuncture on the repair process of transected sciatic nerve of rat and the S-100 protein expression. Results: Electro-acupuncture could significantly potentiate the S-100 protein expression of Schwann Cells (SC) in the repair process of transected sciatic nerve. At the 14th week, 17th week and 20th week after operation, the percentages of S-100 protein area were more obviously increased in 5 Hz electro-acupuncture group and 100 Hz electro-acupuncture group than in model group, with significant differences (P<0.05). Especially, the better effect was obtained in 5 Hz electro-acupuncture group. Judging from the dynamic treatment, it is very vital to be treated early. Conclusion: Electro-acupuncture is an effective method for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury, and its therapeutic effect is related to the improvement of SC proliferation.
2.Effects of electro-acupuncture on remyelination of the transected sciatic nerve in rats
Chinese Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 2009;31(2):83-86
Objective To investigate the effects of electro-acupuncture (EA) on remyelination after sciatic nerve was transected in rats, so as to explore the possible mechanism of EA in treatment of peripheral nerve injury. Methods After transection of rat's sciatic nerve, the nerve regeneration chamber was built, then the rats were given EA stimulation at frequencies of 5 Hz and 100 Hz, respectively, and Solochrome Cyanine staining, HE staining of nerve fibers, immunohistochemical staining and semi-quantitative image analysis technique were employed to observe the remyelination of the nerve fibers and S-100 protein expression of Schwann cells. Results EA could significantly promote remyelination of the nerve fibers, elevate S-100 protein expression of Schwann Cells in repairing process of transected sciatic nerve of rats. The therapeutic effect of 5 Hz EA group was better than that of 100 Hz EA group. Conclusion EA is an effective way for the treatment of peripheral nerve injury. It can promote proliferation of Schwann cells and nerve fiber myelination. The therapeutic effects of EA are frequency-depondent.

Acupuncture was frequently used for alternative treatments in Parkinson's disease because of its safety, but there was an argument whether acupuncture improves motor symptoms or not.Besides, few electrophysiological studies were designed for acupuncture combined with Parkinson's disease Using the technique of paired transcranial pulse magnetic stimulation,we measured the excitability of corticocortical inhibitory circuits to investigate effects of scalp acupuncture from 9 patients with Parkinson's disease.Although patients didn't take any short-term benefit in motor symptoms through the treatment of scalp acupuncture, there was no any adverse event, and some electrophysical effects developed in patients. The enhanced corticocortical inhibition on motor cortex possibly developed at longer interstimulus intervals, and there was a relatively increase in later part of motor-related cortical potentials on the central part and right-side near vertex around over sensory cortex, but was not significant in early potentials. So a further long-term study is essential to ascertain the physical mechanism and clinical effects in scalp acupuncture.

BACKGROUND: Therapist-assisted treadmill training is good gait training, but it consumes great physical strength of therapists, and requires many persons. Clinical application was limited. Robot-assisted treadmill training has been paid great attention. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the role of robot in recovery of walking after spinal cord injury (SCI) and its influence on muscle activation patterns and kinematic patterns.RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Although there is currently no evidence that robot-assisted gait training improves walking function more than other locomotor training strategies. Several advantages of robotic devices are obvious for applications targeting gait rehabilitation. Robotic devices are passive in nature and focus primarily on repeated movements of the limbs via fixed kinematic trajectories. These types of training abolish the cycle-to-cycle variation in the kinematics and the sensorimotor pathways. They also cannot sensitively monitor important characteristics of the training as therapists do. Therapists need to know the robot devices, understand how to change parameters to continuously challenge the subjects, and are able to assess when the workload is inappropriate for the subject's abilities so that they can maximize voluntary locomotor performance during assisted stepping to augment the recovery of functional walking.
