We describe a 58-years-old man with a primary nasopharyngeal carcinoma accompanying erythroderma. His first symptoms were systemic scattered erythema and itching for six months. Lower right cervical lymphadenectasis was found by physical examination. A neoplasm in nasopharynx could be seen with nasal endoscope. The pathology of the neoplasm was non-keratinizing carcinoma. This case illustrates that "erythroderma" could be a paraneoplastic effect of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Practical Oncology Journal 2014;(6):524-529
Objective To explore the expression of Excision repair cross -completion 1 in non-small cell lung cancer and to analyze its clinical significance .Methods ERCC1 protein expression was detected by IHC method in 160 cases of non-small cell lung cancer tissue .We analyzed relationship between the ERCC 1 ex-pression and clinicopathological parameters of non -small cell lung cancer ,as well as its correlation between ER-CC1 expression and the prognosis .At the same time ,160 cases of intraoperative specimens were primarily cul-tured.The relationship between ERCC1 expression and the drug sensitivity of DDP was analyzed .Results ER-CC1 protein was mainly expressed in the nucleus .ERCC1 protein expression in lung cancer tissue showed no rela-tionship with age, gender, tumor size and pathological types .ERCC1 protein expression was associated with TNM stages and lymph node metastases .High expression of ERCC1was significantly correlated with poor prognosis in pa-tients,indicating that ERCC1 is the independent factor of NSCLC patients .MTT results showed that the positive ex-pression rate of ERCC1 in DDP sensitive groups was higher than in DDP resistant groups .Conclusion ERCC1 is an independent factor influencing the prognosis of non -small cell lung cancer ,and associated with DDP resistance .

Objective To observe the ultrastructure and absorption function of colon mucosa in rat with ultra-short bowel syndrome. Methods Totally 30 SD rats were randomly divided into three groups: ultra-short bowel group (90%-95% of the intestine was surgically resected, n = 10), sham group (n = 10), and normal control group (n = 10). All animals were given with enteral nutrition. Scanning electron microscopy was performed 21 days later to observe the morphology of mucosal surface, and transmission electron microscopy was performed to observe the ultrastructural changes of intestinal epithelial cells. The absorption of colon to water, carbohydrates, and amino acid determined after 3 hours of closed perfusion of the colon with D-xylose solution and 15N-glycine on the continuous cycle of colon. Results As shown by the transmission electron microscopy, compared with the normal control group, rats in the ultra-short bowel group showed significantly decreased goblet cells on colonic mucosl surface, increased epithelial cells, longer and denser microvillus, increased area of membrane surface, increased number of cell-cell junctions, increased number of desmosome, tight junction, and gap junctions, higher development of endoplasmic reticulum and dictyosome, and increased number of mitochondria. As shown in the screening electron microscopy, compared with the normal rats, rats in the ultra-short bowl group had significantly deeper colon folds, thicker mucous membrane, increased number of bay openings, and longer and denser microvillus-like structures inside bays. The capability of water absorption was signicatnly higher in the ultra-short bowl group than in the sham group and normal control group (P = 0. 000) . The absorption rates of xylose and 15 N-glycine were also significantly higher in the ultra-short bowl group than in the control group (P < 0. 01). Conclusions The absorption capability can be compensatively increased in rats with ultra-short bowel syndrome. Decreased apoptosis of colon mucosa cells, increased absorption cells, hyperplasia of microvilli, increased area of the membrane surface, and increased number of mitochondria may constitute its material and energy bases.

Objective To observe the effects of acetyl-l-carnitine (ALC) on autophagy, apoptosis and motor function after acute spinal cord injury (ASCI) in rats. Methods Thirty-six adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham operation group (Sham group, n=12), simple spinal cord injury group (SCI group, n=12), ALC treatment group (ALC group, n=12). Spinal cord injury model at the level of T10 segment was established using Allen's method. They were assessed with Basso-Beattle-Bresnahan (BBB) scale three days after injury. Then the rats were sacrificed, and the expression of microtubule associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3)-II in spinal cord was detect-ed with Western blotting and immunofluorescent labeling, and the number of apoptotic cells were assessed with TUNEL staining. Results The expression of LC3-II and the number of apoptotic cells increased in SCI group compared with those in Sham group (P<0.01), while the BBB score decreased (P<0.001). The expression of LC3-II increased and the number of apoptotic cells decreased in ALC group compared with those in SCI group (P<0.001), while the BBB score increased (P<0.01). Conclusion ALC may promote autophagy, and inhibit apopto-sis to improve the locomotor function after ASCI.

[ ABSTRACT] AIM:In this study, we aim to obtain the induced pluripotent stem cells ( iPSCs) from the patients with sporadic Alzheimer disease ( AD) .METHODS:Three typical Alzheimer’ s patients were chosen, and the epithelial cells were isolated from their urine. We reprogrammed these cells into induced pluripotent stem cells by transfection of 4 factors (Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and SV40LT) with the technique of electro-transfection.After getting these iPSCs, we continue to differentiate them into neural cells by a specific method—dual inhibition of Smad signaling.RESULTS: The primary cells from 3 AD patients were successfully reprogrammed to iPSCs, and these patients-derived iPSCs were differentiated into neural cells. There was no significant difference, during iPSCs reprogramming and neural differentiation, between cells from AD patients and normal people.CONCLUSION: The urine cells from AD patients were able to transfer to iPSCs, functional neurons and neurogliocytes.
