Chinese Journal of Geriatrics 2010;29(8):691-693
Objective To investigate the consultative status of patients with Alzheimer Disease (AD), and to evaluate the efficacy and safety of donepezil (Aricept) in the treatment of AD.Methods This survey was initiated by Chinese society of Geriatrics, and was sponsored by Eisai (China) Inc. It was conducted in 60 hospitals of 40 cities in China. The diagnosis of dementia was made according to ICD-10 and DSM-Ⅳ criteria. The cognition, behavior and ability of daily living of the patients were compared before and after 3-month treatment with donepezil. Results A total of 808 dementia patients were recruited. The main reasons for patients' seeing doctors included memory problem (n= 703, 87%), behavioral and psychological symptoms (n= 250, 31%), impairment of ability of daily living (n= 388, 48% ). The disease course was from 9 months to 16 months, and mean disease course was (13.0 ±0. 2) months. Patients mainly sought treatment from neurologist (74 % ),psychiatrist (6 % ) and geriatrics ( 19 %). They received dementia diagnosis at ( 14.4 ± 0.3) months after their dementia symptoms appeared. Treatment with donepezil for three months improved their cognition, ability of daily living and mental condtion (all P<0.05). The main adverse effects were nausea, vomiting etc. Conclusions In China, the percentage of people with dementia seeking treatment is low. Most people with dementia see doctors when they reach moderate and severe stages, which affects the efficacy of treatment and daily activity of the patients. Treatment with donepezil for 3 months is effective in improving cognition, behavior and activity of daily living.

Objective To investigate the characteristics of the author groups in 《Chinese Journal of Geriatrics》,in order to provide references for the future construction and development of the author ranks. Methods Bibliometric method was used to analyze the quantity of papers, region distributions, core authors and cooperative rate in 《Chinese Journal of Geriatrics》 from 2009 to 2013.Results The total amount of papers published in 《Chinese Journal of Geriatrics》》 from 2009 to 2013 was 1636,involving 31 provinces, autonomous regions, municipalities and administrative region.Among these,Beijing,Zhejiang,Tianjin and Jiangsu were the 3 top contributing regions, accounting for 54.0 percent (884/1636 papers). The 1636 papers were contributed by 1435 authors (first authors),of whom 1275 authors published only one paper, accounting for 87.7% (1275/1435),and their papers accounted for 77.9% of the total published papers (1275 /1636).27 authors had high yield of 3 or more papers published and deep influence, and they published 95 papers (5.8%).The degree of cooperation was 4.6 (7599 /1636),and the cooperation rate was 93.8% (1534/1636) within the five years. Conclusions 《Chinese Journal of Geriatrics》is quite influential and attractive in the fields of geriatrics, and a good cooperative relationship is displayed between different authors and authors' institutions.

Objective To analyze the structural, content and language characteristics of English abstract in domestic versus international geriatrics journals in order to promote international exchange in geriatric medicine research in our country. Methods In this paper,we analyzed the characteristics and contents of original articles published in 5 foreign journals (IF>3.0) from Pubmed database (n=60) and 5 core (the source of statistics) domestic geriatric journals from Wanfang web during recent 3 years (n=61).Results Our survey showed that in the domestic geriatrics journals, the structured abstracts were used with inflexible four-heading and fixed leading words. In foreign geriatrics journals,however,non-structured abstracts were mostly applied in articles on basic research, and structured abstracts primarily appeared in clinical or survey research papers.Compared with foreign geriatrics journals, the shortages or some problems in English abstracts of the domestic geriatrics journals included a short writing, repetition of objective with title, lack of description of research background, improper description of results data, more passive voice, improper use of modal verbs. Conclusions The domestic geriatrics journals should learn the diverse forms of abstracts and content structure from foreign geriatrics journals, strengthen the elaboration of background and highlights, and use active voice in concordance with the international mainstream.
