Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction among cardiac patients at the Philippine General Hospital, and its association with mortality. Methodology: 163 adult cardiac patients were screened for subclinical thyroid dysfunction, [subclinical hyperthyroidism (SCT), subclinical hypothyroidism (SCHO), non-thyroidal illness syndrome (NTIS)]. Demographic and clinical characteristics were analyzed using ANOVA and Fisher’s exact test. Outcome considered were hospital duration, need for mechanical ventilation, inotropic support and mortality. Crude association between subclinical thyroid dysfunction and outcomes was evaluated using relative risk. Results: Prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction was 32.5% (5.5% SCT, 5.5% SCHO, and 21.5% NTIS). The risk of necessitating mechanical ventilation was about twofold higher in subclinical thyroid dysfunction compared to euthyroid patients (RR=2.64), and was highest in SCHO (RR=3.71). The risk of inotropic support was about twofold higher (RR=2.70) in SCHO compared to euthyroid patients. Overall death rate was higher in subclinical thyroid dysfunction (RR=1.86), and highest in SCHO (RR=2.47) compared to euthyroid patients. Conclusion There is a significant prevalence of subclinical thyroid dysfunction among hospitalized patients with cardiac disease at 32.5%. Cardiovascular risk factors are not statistically significant. We observed a trend of increased risk of requiring mechanical ventilation, inotropes and overall mortality in SCHO.

Introuduction: The current study aims to investigate the prevalence rates, associated factors, and predictors of anxiety disorders in Malaysia through a scoping review. Methods: PsycINFO and MEDLINE databases and a total of 28 local journals were used to search for published papers in this particular area. In this case, 37 out of 105 articles managed to meet the inclusion criteria and were subjected to review. A total of 17,673 respondents, which comprised university students, the general community, and numerous types of clinical patients, were included in the review. Results: The results showed that the prevalence rate of anxiety disorders was in the range between 1% and 67.6% for the mentioned populations. Moreover, various types of associated factors were found to be related to anxiety such as being divorced, widowed, or single; having a lower than tertiary level of education; being unemployed or retired; and having a low socioeconomic status. Meanwhile, there were also several predictors of anxiety such as having to deal with negative life events; domestic violence; family history of mental illness; severe psychological problems; and chronic physical illness. Conclusion Generally, the prevalence of anxiety disorders is noticeable, and anxiety disorders may contribute to a decrease in the quality of life, an increase in social burden, reduced productivity, and increased utilization of health services. Therefore, awareness among community and health service providers regarding the prevalence rate of anxiety is believed to help in developing access to evidence-based psychological and pharmacological interventions.

Background: Surveys in disability are getting more and more attention from the Governments and contributes towards improve service provision for people with disabilities. Objective: To describe the prevalence of people with disabilities at The Chi Linh demographic and epidemiological surveillance system (CHILILAB), Hai Duong province in 2007. Subject and Method: The cross - cutting survey conducted in the CHILILAB which has a population of 65.438 people, the WHO questionnaire of disability screening was used. Result and conclusion: Disability prevalence in Chi Linh occurs in 28.2% of the population. It is noted that the disability prevalence increases significantly with age groups: 81.8% of those who are over 60, 58.2% those aged of 40 - 59 and only 8 - 9% of those aged under 40. In addition, the disability prevalence is higher in the rural areas, women, the poor and the illiterate.
