5.Human papillomavirus types and their related diseases.

With the development of biomolecular technology, more human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been found to be related with various diseases. High-risk HPV 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 61 have shown causal relationship with cancers of the cervix, vulva, vagina, penis, anus, oral cavity, and oropharynx. Low-risk HPV 6 and 11 have shown causal relationship with genital warts. HPV may also cause cancer of the larynx. However, the relationships between HPV and esophagus and lung cancers are still controversial.

6.Circumscribed Palmar Hypokeratosis Showing Bowenoid Change Secondary to Human Papilloma Virus.

Circumscribed palmar or plantar hypokeratosis is a rare condition characterized by the occurrence of an erythematous, well-circumscribed, and depressed macule or patch on the palms or soles. Histopathologically, it is characterized by sharp, stair-like abrupt thinning of the horny layer between the affected and unaffected skin. The pathogenesis of this condition remains unclear. Recently, the human papilloma virus has been implicated as a possible etiological contributor. Circumscribed palmar or plantar hypokeratosis usually shows a benign course. Previous reports have not described malignant changes in these lesions. However, its association with actinic keratosis has been reported in a previous case. We report a case of circumscribed palmar hypokeratosis showing bowenoid epidermal change with expression of the human papilloma virus types 6 and 16 in a patient who was successfully treated with ingenol mebutate gel and cryotherapy.

7.Prevalence of high-risk HPV in women with biopsy-proven Condyloma Acuminata

Objective:
To determine the prevalence of HPV high risk positivity among women patients ages 30 to 65 with biopsyproven external genital warts (condyloma acuminata) specifically for HPV 16, HPV 18, and for other high risk types 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66/68, 73, and 82.
Methodology:
A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Out-Patient Services of the Philippine General Hospital involving 57 women, 30 to 65 years old, with biopsy proven external genital warts or condyloma acuminata. These women underwent human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping test for the high risk types (HR-HPV) from cervical samples using the automated polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology.
Results:
Fifteen out the 57 subjects had at least one of the HR-HPV types for an overall prevalence of 26.3%. Of the 15, 8 (53.3%) had at least 2 HR-HPV types with one subject having the most number of types at 6. Among the strains, the most common is HPV 51 and 52 each with a prevalence of 8.77% followed by HPV 53 and 59 at 7% each. HPV 16 and 18 each only had a 3.5% prevalence the same as HPV 58, 73, and 82. HR-HPV positivity was most common in the 30 to 39 age group (80%), and equally in the nulligravid and the secundigravid (40% each). None had current or past cigarettesmoking history and 33% had some form of hormonal contraception.
Conclusion
The overall prevalence of high risk HPV (HR-HPV) among these 57 Filipino women with external genital warts is 26.3%. The higher prevalence of HPV 51, 52, 53, and 59 over HPV 16 and 18 in this group does not follow the usual epidemiological characteristics reported about this disease.

8.Detection of Genital Human Papilloma Viruses Using PCR.

Fifteen cases of genital warts were examined for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) using polymerise chain reaction (PCR). HPV6/11 DNA were found in all cases of genital warts. The PCR based methods described here provide a sensitive, accurate means of detecting genital HPVs.

9.HPV Knowledge, HPV Vaccination Intention, and Barriers on HPV Vaccination in Male Undergraduate Students of Health Department and Non-health Department.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify the level of Human papillomavirus (HPV) knowledge, intention of HPV vaccination, and barriers on HPV vaccination among male undergraduate students of Health department and Non-health department. METHODS: A total of 149 male undergraduate students responded to self-administered questionnaires about their HPV knowledge, HPV vaccination intention, and their barriers on HPV vaccination. ANOVA, t-test and χ2 test (Fisher's exact test) were used for data analysis. RESULTS: Mean score of HPV knowledge was 3.39±3.05, and there was significant difference between Health department (4.15±3.08) and Non-health department (2.58±2.82) in HPV knowledge (t=3.241, p=.001). There was no significant difference in HPV vaccination acceptance between the two groups. The barriers on HPV vaccination were 'lack of information about HPV vaccine efficacy' and 'lack of information about HPV vaccination time and strategy', and there were significant differences in barriers on HPV vaccination between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The knowledge on HPV was low, and HPV vaccination was hindered due to lack of information about HPV vaccine despite their intention to obtain HPV vaccine. HPV education to promote HPV vaccination should be targeted among male students.

10.Efficacy of Punch Reduction Prior to Cryotherapy in Patients with Viral Warts: A Case-Control Study in a Single Tertiary Center.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous warts are a common complaint to visit dermatologic clinic and its course is variable, ranging from spontaneous resolution to a chronic condition refractory to treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of punch biopsy for cutaneous warts. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients who received punch biopsy for warts were reviewed through charts and photos. Among them, 15 were matched with cryotherapy-only controls in terms of size and location of the wart. We compared the number and cost of treatments between the two groups. RESULTS: Eleven of the total 39 patients were treated with cryotherapy in addition to punch biopsy and the average number of treatments was 4.1±3.3 (mean±standard deviation). In a case-control study, the ratio value of cost was 2.9±3.6 in the experimental group and was 5.9±4.1 in controls (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: Punch biopsies can decrease the number and cost of treatment by reducing the size of warts and inducing local inflammation to accelerate resolution. Therefore, punch reduction should be considered as a viable measure to treat warts.
