2.Lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1: protein, ligands, expression and pathophysiological significance.

OBJECTIVETo review the recent research progress in lectin-like oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptor-1 (LOX-1) including its protein, ligands, expression and pathophysiological significance. Data sources Information included in this article was identified by searching of PUBMED (1997 - 2006) online resources using the key term LOX-1.
STUDY SELECTIONMainly original milestone articles and critical reviews written by major pioneer investigators of the field were selected.
RESULTSThe key issues related to the LOX-1 protein as well as ligands for LOX-1. Factors regulating the expression of LOX-1 were summarized. The pathophysiological functions of LOX-1 in several diseases were discussed.
CONCLUSIONSIdentification of LOX-1 and a definition of its biological role in pathophysiologic states provide deeper insight into the pathogenesis of some cardiovascular diseases especially in atherosclerosis and provide a potential selective therapeutic approach. LOX-1 is unlocking and drugs targeting LOX-1 might be a promising direction to explore.

3.Acetabular Dysplasia and Osteoarthritis Developed by an Eversion of the Acetabular Labrum.

There is much confusion in orthopedic literature regarding the nature and significance of the so-called acetabular labrum in congenital dislocation of the hip. This experiment describes an animal model in which the relationship between eversion of the acetabular labrum and acetabular dysplasia with degeneration of the articular cartilage was studied. The acetabulum gradually become shallower and more vertically oriented and the femoral head gradually subluxed, but never dislocated. The radiographic appearance of the hip dysplasia was very similar to that seen in human beings. The animals remained asymptomatic without clinically visible signs of hip abnormality throughout the study. It was clearly demonstrated that there was substantial amounts of degenerative change in the articular cartilages of the subluxed hip with no evidence of degenerative change radiologically. It could be concluded that excision of the acetabular labrum should be avoided during open reduction of congenital dislocation of the hip.

4.Pasteurella multocida Infection of the Calf in a Patient Who had Moxa Cautery Treatment for Degenerative Arthritis.

Pasteurella multocida infection in man is rare. This organism was isolated from a calf infection of a 48-year-old woman with degenerative arthritis who had the history of treatments with prednisolone, acupuncture and moxa cauterization. She did not have any animal contact. It was condsidered probable that the organism invaded through the cauterization ulcers. The organism was difficult to identify, because of its superficial resemblance to other organisms. Oxi/Ferm and N/F systems failed to identify the isolate. The organism was susceptible to many antimicrobial agents tested except to amikacin and clindamycin.

Osteoarthritis (Osteoarthritis, OA) is a common clinical degenerative joint disease with increased incidence rate in recent years. Animal experiment is one of the important ways to explore pathogenesis and treatment of OA, while induced animal model is the most important part in animal experiment. Intra-articular injection of drugs is a classical method for establishing animal model of OA. Choose of animal should follows the principle of correlation, appropriateness and practicability, injections should perform in accordance with experimental purposes and subject, detections means and evaluation methods also should corresponding to experimental reality. The gold standard of OA animal model and intra-articular injections has not build, need further study.

6.Subchondral bone in osteoarthritis: a review.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent of joint diseases,and its pathology is characterized by the degeneration of cartilage, sclerosis of subchondral bone, and osteophyte formation. Localization of the early lesions of OA has not been clarified, but many researchers have focused on cartilage and have considered that changes in subchondral bone occur subsequently to the degeneration of cartilage. However, a low bone mineral density, particularly in the knee joint with OA, high bone turnover, and efficacy of bone resorption inhibitors for OA have recently been reported, suggesting that subchondral bone plays an important role in the pathogenesis of OA. This review aims to make a conclusion about advancement in research of subchondral bone in osteoarthritis.

7.Periprosthetic subtrochanteric femoral fracture in a megaprosthesis of the knee.

We report a rare case of periprosthetic posttraumatic fracture of subtrochanteric region of femur after a megaprosthesis of the knee, done for resistant nonunion of distal femur with secondary osteoarthrosis in a 51 years old man. Treatment with a locking femoral plate was able to achieve primary union with a good result.

8.Clinical advances of muscle status in osteoarthritis.

This article summarizes relevant clinical studies on muscle status and osteoarthritis. Evidence from many researches have implied the importance of muscle weakness, decreased muscle strength and muscle function as pathological factor in the process of osteoarthritis, and muscle should also be an effective target for the treatment of osteoarthritis. Further study need to be conducted from the angle of muscle to explore the mechanism of osteoarthritis and to develop new drugs.

10.The relationship of the expression of estrogen receptor in cartilage cell and osteoarthritis induced by bilateral ovariectomy in guinea pig.

To investigate the estrogen receptor (ER) expression in cartilage cell in the development of osteoarthritis induced by bilateral ovariectomy in guinea pig and to find their relationship. 30 two-month-old female guinea pigs were randomly divided into two groups (n = 15 each): sham operation (control) group and ovariectomized group (OVX); Scanning electorne microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were obtained to analysis the cartilage degeneration of the hind limb knee joint after 6 and 12 weeks of ovariectomy. Dextran-Coated-Charcoal (DCC) was taken to quantitively detect the expression of ER. The serum levels of estrogen and gestone were detected by immune contest assay. The results showed that ER do exist in the cartilages of the guinea pigs, with higher expression in the control group than in OVX group at the same time point (P < 0.05). It was increased also at 12 th week after operation than that of preoperation. The blood serum levels of estrogen and gestone showed a similar tendency to the expression of ER. Joint cartilage degeneration detected by SEM and TEM could be found at 6 th week, but severe degenerative lesions at 12 th week in the OVX group compared with the control group (P < 0.01). The data suggested that bilateral ovariectomy in guinea pig lead to severe osteoarthritis which mighgt be related to the lower serum level of estrogen and the downregulation of the expression of ER in the cartilage also.
