1.A Study on Knowledge, Importance and Performance in Nursing Records of University Hospital Nurses

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess hospital nurses' knowledge, importance and performance in keeping nursing records.METHODS: The research design was a descriptive study. The sample for this study was 186 nurses with at least one year of work experience at a hospital with more than 800 beds in Seoul. Knowledge was self-reported using the Nurse Charting Knowledge Scale. Importance and performance were rated on a 4-point scale of 26 items. Data were analyzed by SPSS 21.0 program and IPA.RESULTS: This study showed significant results that knowledge, importance and performance for keeping record are related to each other. The importance and performance of nurse's records were relatively higher than the mean. In the IPA Matrix, there were 2 items requiring improvement, 13 items requiring maintenance, and 11 items with low priority.CONCLUSION: Therefore, awareness of the importance of record keeping and continuous education on nursing record knowledge should be provided so that nurses can improve their record keeping skills.

5.Contents Development of Nursing Information Network.

There is no nursing information network related to nursing research, clinical test, drug, and law, although primary responsibility is on nurses about medication, and clinical laboratory test such as blood sampling. Majorities of education for nurses on medication and clinical laboratory test are not systematic, and education on medical law that can be protect nurses' right is very limited. Therefore, information exchange and communication among clinical nurses is required to expand nursing knowledge and professionalism. This study was conducted to develop nursing information contents on nursing research trend, drug, clinical test, nursing law, and medical atlas. Those can fulfil the nurses' informational needs. As a result of contents development, nursing information site was constructed that can offer all nursing related informations using direct link services. In this site, nurses can integrate informations on nursing research, nursing education, and nursing practice systematically with diversity.

6.Lived Experience of Clinical Nursing Instructors' Role in Clinical Practicum

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the role of clinical nursing instructors' lived experience in clinical practicum.METHODS: Data were collected from 11 clinical nursing instructors by in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed using content analysis of Downe-Wamboldt (1992).RESULTS: Four themes and twelve subthemes were extracted. 1) Recognizing and conducting the roles of clinical nursing instructor: ‘Helping and providing support for successful clinical practicum’, ‘Coordinating clinical activities in daily practice’, ‘Providing mentoring as an elder in life’; 2) Participating in improving integrative nursing competency: ‘Helping to improve cognitive competency’, ‘Helping to improve functional competency’, ‘Contributing to form desirable professionalism’, ‘Helping to deliberate the nature of nursing’; 3) Experiencing difficulties in performing the role of clinical nursing instructor: ‘Facing with difficulty from institutional limits’, ‘Recognizing difficulty from lack of personal knowledge and experience’; 4) Experiencing value of clinical nursing instructor and accomplishing personal growth: ‘Making efforts to widen personal knowledge and experience’, ‘Developing one's own educational competency’, ‘Making a chance to reflect oneself’.CONCLUSION: Despite the distinctive features of clinical nursing instructors, little is known of the characteristics. The results of this study could be used as a reference to improve the quality of clinical nursing education.

7.An Action Research to Improve Fundamental Nursing Practice Course: Designing College Courses Model.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to improve the quality of fundamental nursing practice course. METHODS: Participants were 132 students who took the fundamental nursing practice course at D university in N city. The study included processes of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 program and qualitative data were evaluated through content analysis. RESULTS: The 12-step designing college courses model by Fink was applied in the planning. In the acting stage, the course was conducted according to the instruction in designing the course, students wrote reflective journals and the professor gave feedback to the reflective journal and the class observation journal was used for lessons. In the observation stage, the course evaluation was surveyed and analyzed, evaluations were positive with 47.1% of students positively evaluating the teaching strategy. In the reflecting stage, outcomes in course improvement were reflected on and, the number of students at the lower level-of-achievement decreased. CONCLUSION: Action research was a useful research method that could capture the quality improvement process in college courses. Expression of effort and passion to improve quality of education through action research in various ways and to share quality improvement strategies for nursing education are important.

8.Trends in Evidence-based Nursing Research in South Korea.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the current status of research related to evidence-based nursing and to suggest directions for the future of evidence-based nursing practice, education and research. METHODS: A search was done of 20 research publications, including domestic nursing journals, nursing master's theses and doctoral dissertations before November 2016. Finally, 183 studies were selected. The selected papers were analyzed using descriptive statistics and χ² test with the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. RESULTS: Most of papers examined in this study were journal articles (80.9%). Meta-analysis (35.0%) was the most common study design. Methodological characteristics were as follows: before 2010 about 5% were documents that suggested Priori' design, generation of PICO, search strategy, quality assessment and description of quality assessment outcome, but after 2011, these designs increased to 30.8%, 73.1%, 41.0%, 91.0% and 65.4%, respectively. The most frequent topics for evidence-based nursing implementation were evidence-based nursing readiness (16 papers). Highest frequency topics in systematic reviews and meta-analysis were studies that confirmed the intervention effect of exercise programs. The highest frequency topics in guideline were temperature control. CONCLUSION: Researchers' perceptions to improve research methodological quality and education to strengthen the research capability are necessary.

9.Reflection-related Research in Korean Nursing: A Literature Review

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to analyze research on reflection in Korean nursing, and suggest future directions for effective application of reflective practice in Korean nursing education and practice. METHODS: A review was performed using domestic databases including RISS, KISS, DBpia, and NDSL. Twenty-three papers were analyzed according to general characteristics, key variables regarding reflection, and findings regarding reflection. RESULTS: Reflection in nursing research has received attention since 2005, generating almost half the publications in the last 3 years. Key variables regarding reflection were classified into reflection-related general term (34.7%), reflective action (8.6%), and reflection writing method (56.7%). Findings regarding reflection were categorized into correlation of reflection with other variables (26.1%), learning evaluation using a reflective journal (22.2%), effects of applying reflection as an intervention (47.4%), and Korean Self-Reflection and Insight Scale validation (4.3%). CONCLUSION: Results indicate that reflection or reflective practice is an important component in integrating theories to practice, and that reflective practice is a prerequisite to becoming a professional nurse as well as a crucial tool for ideal changes in nursing. Considerable effort should be made to define the concept of reflective practice and effectively apply it to nursing education and practice in Korea.

10.Current Status of Transcultural Nursing Education in Nursing Baccalaureate Programs.

PURPOSE: This study presents the current status of transcultural nursing education in nursing baccalaureate programs. METHODS: The nursing curricula from 185 out of 194 nursing colleges that received accreditation were collected and analyzed. RESULTS: 109 (58.9%) nursing colleges offered 117 transcultural nursing-related courses. The courses were offered as elective (68.4%) as well as major (78.6%) courses. All courses were offered as a theoretical delivery class without any field experiences. The courses were offered mainly for sophomore (41.9%) and freshman students (33.3%), and most of them (79.5%) were two-credit courses. Instead of the term “transcultural nursing,”“multicultural nursing” is mostly used in the title of courses. An inconsistency between the title of courses and their content was found. After analyzing the title of courses based on four nursing meta-paradigms, courses related to the environment were most common (41.9%). CONCLUSION: Transcultural nursing education has developed during the last decade. However, teaching methods and course content have not developed enough. Thus, a greater effort is needed to increase awareness of the importance of transcultural nursing education and to develop courses for it.
