2.An Exploration of the Lived Experience of the Poor Solitary Elder.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 1999;11(2):227-239
The Purpose of this study was to explore and describe the lived experience of the poor solitary elder by eliciting verbal descriptions of their experiences. The phenomenological approach in qualitative studies is used to serve this purpose. Colaizzi's method is used for phenomenological analysis of the data in this study. which were collected from 10 poor solitary elders. They were asked open ended and descriptive questions in order to get them to talk about their experiences in their own terms. Interviews were tape recorded and transcribed verbatim. From the protocols, 182 significant statements about lived experience were organized and then grouped into 4 theme clusters. The major themes that emerged from the analysis were 'Awareness of Power Declining'. 'Emotional Disturbances of The Self'. 'Love and Hatred to Family', 'Trying to Accept Life'. The result of this study showed that the poor solitary elder needed nursing care based on a deep understanding of their lived experiences in their everyday life. From this study of essential themes for understanding the poor solitary elder, Nurses and health workers must develop supportive programs for helping the poor solitary elder.

3.Concept Analysis of Comfort.
Journal of Korean Academy of Adult Nursing 1999;11(1):169-178
The concept of comfort has been regarded as a core concept of nursing and it has been frequently used as one of main goals of nursing care. Promoting comfort has been a very important objective in clinical nursing practice. There have been some ambiguities in defining the concept of 'comfort" among nursing scholars. Therefore it was necessary to analyse the concept of comfort for clearer definition to be able to share among scholars. This study is an attempt to analyse concept of comfort and to do it according to a series of concept development processes described by Walker and Avant. Based on the results of the study, the attributes of scope, precedence and consequence of comfort were identified : 1. Attributes 1) stability 2) directionality 3) equilibrium 4) firmness 2. Scope 1) physical 2) social 3) emotional 4) spiritua~ 3. Precedence and Consequence 1) precedence (1) instability (2) unsatisfied needs 2) consequence (1) physical & psychological relaxation (2) enhancement of self-worth (3) enhancement of self-efficacy (4) satisfied needs.

Journal of Korean Society of Medical Informatics 1999;5(3):1-8
This study aims at the developing of a computer program for the evaluation of nursing care quality. Since the professional nursing care requires a consistent evaluation, the computer program for the measurement of quality of nursing care is necessary. It provides the nursing care with an effective and efficient management of nursing quality. In this study, a computer program is developed as a module. The evaluation criteria are structured in a hierarchical manner. Each evaluation area includes several items, which again have their own indicators. The system consists of 7 evaluation areas, 32 evaluation items, and 71 indicators. Scoring is possible with the evaluation items. The scoring types of the program are of two types, that is, the norm-referenced type(option 1) and the criterion-referenced type(option 2). With this program, an accurate and consistent evaluation of nursing care with the rapid feedback to nursing care practice is expected.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 1998;28(1):17-25
This study was done to evaluate the quality of clinical nursing care using the variables of structure, process, and outcome and to analyze the relationship between the variables. This study also explored which variables are validating indicators to evaluate the quality of nursing care. The results analyzed by multiple regression showed that, generally structural variables did not contribute to the variance in outcome scores, but process variables of nursing care contributed significantly to the outcome variable of patient satisfaction. A combination of structure and process variables more than structural variables alone. Also, patient satisfaction and hospital preference were significantly related to each other. Therefore, if nursing quality evaluation relies solely upon on structural variables such as number of available nurses and workload, it would be inaccurate because process variables of nursing care are strongly related to outcome variables and the two categories of structure and process variables helped to strengthen the relationships. Thus, it is important to focus on variables of structure, process, and outcome together in evaluating nursing care quality.

6.Effects of a New Nursing Delivery System on Nurses' Satisfaction, Self-efficacy, Job Stress, and Nursing Performance in a University Hospital.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing Administration 2017;23(3):301-311
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify effects of moving from a functional method of nursing care delivery to a modified team nursing delivery system. METHODS: A structured self-report questionnaire was used to measure satisfaction with the nursing delivery system, self-efficacy, job stress and nursing performance. Participants were 72 nurses working at a university hospital and data were collected three times; before, one month and three months after the modification to a modified team nursing delivery system. Data were analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. RESULTS: Satisfaction with the nursing delivery system increased significantly after the change to the modified team nursing method. There were no significant differences in self-efficacy, job stress, or nursing performance. However, satisfaction with the nursing delivery system and nursing performance increased and job stress decreased significantly in new nurses with less than 1 year experience. CONCLUSION: Results indicate that a modified team nursing method has positive results on nurses' satisfaction, self-efficacy, job stress, and nursing performance compared to the functional method. Effect of changing the nursing delivery system in the hospital suggests possibilities and directions for a modified nursing delivery system that would be useful in hospitals presently using the functional method.

Journal of Korean Academy of Community Health Nursing 2018;29(2):155-169
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to review the quantitative research literature on measuring caring in order to identify overall trends in measuring caring. METHODS: Fifty three papers were selected from four databases including RISS4U, DBpia, KISS, and Korea Med. RESULTS: The number of measuring caring papers has increased since 2000. Approximately 60 % of the total papers were descriptive and correlative design researches with convenience sampling. Jean Waston's theory was the most popular conceptual framework, but much of the research tended to be conducted without any conceptual framework. In that kind of research, ‘caring’ terms were used without definition. The most frequently used term for the concept of caring was nurses' caring behaviors. Also, ‘nurses’ was one of the most popular subjects. Thirty six measuring caring instruments were used. Twenty were developed in foreign countries and translated into Korean. The others were developed originally in Korean. Interpersonal Caring Technique - Communication Skills Scale, based on the interpersonal process model, was the most frequently used tool. Among the translated instruments, Coates' Caring Efficacy Scale was the most popular. Some instruments were used without validation. CONCLUSION: These results provide basic data on measuring caring and indicate directions for further research. In particular, validation studies of measuring caring instruments are needed.

The aim of this qualitative research was to identify the meaning of wholistic humanized nursing care, to identify the professional process of cultivating a humanistic mind, and to create the Cultivating Humanizing Nursing Care Model based on the experiences of nursing students and nurse instructors of Boromarajonani College of Nursing Saraburi. Data were collected from 3 focus group discussions, 50 nursing students, selected key informants from the 1st to 4th years, as well as 6 nursing instructors, using purposive sampling. In addition, in-depth interview from 4 instructors was conducted. The interviews data were transcribed and content analyzed. Nursing students perceived holistic humanized care as the high quality provided to patients and their families through unconditional love and compassion; competence, commitment along with empathy and sympathy, confidence and confidentiality. The nursing instructors perceived wholistic humanized care as a will to care directly for nursing students and patients, cultivate a humanistic caring mind in their students through the process of serving as role models to them, and equipping them with sufficient skills and knowledge, positive attitude toward nursing; and sustaining a close collaboration with them in preparing them to be future nurses and nursing instructors who possess a humanistic caring mind. The nursing students perceived wholistic humanized care as a way to show generosity in providing quality nursing acre to their patients, and a way to care for them through understanding their feelings, attitudes and thoughts, and providing to their needs with love and compassion. In conclusion, humanized care concepts proposed by theorists are an eye opener but to realize the true meaning of the concept the students need to have hand-on experiences which can only acquire from practicum and interaction with patients, and their nursing instructors. A Model for Cultivating a Humanistic Caring Mind in Nursing Students was therefore proposed in this study, and an experimental research to test this model has been recommended.

10.A Philosophical Inquiry into Caring in Nursing: Based on Ricoeur's Narrative Ethics.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2005;35(7):1333-1342
PURPOSE: This paper was aimed to inquire into Ricoeur's self -hermeneutics and narrative ethics, and apply it to personal identity constituting caring and care ethics in the practice of nursing. Its purpose is to provide a philosophical foundation for caring in nursing. METHOD: According to Ricoeur's narrative identity, ontological caring was interpreted as personal identity constituting caring. His ethics were described as care ethics, which contributed to preserving and promoting the personal dignity of the client, as self in search for the good life in the nursing practice. RESULTS: Narrative understanding of the client pointed to the ontological role of care in the constitution of personal identity. From an ethical aspect of the narrative, respect for personal identity and personal dignity of the client was crucial to an ethical caring attitude, promoting self-esteem in the nursing practice. CONCLUSION: This paper suggested that Ricoeur's ethics could provide a philosophical basis for understanding ontological and ethical caring in nursing. This contributed to protection of the client from the threat of personal identity, as well as respecting their personal dignity.
